OT: Downloading from iPod to Computer/iTunes

Submitted by heckdchi on

Just wondering if any of you have any experience with this.  A quick Google search comes up with a ton of info/options.  Are there any methods/software products that you would recommend using or not using?

I've got about a 3000 song library that is now only on my iPod after our desktop crashed without having iTunes backed up.  Just trying to find an easier way to replace it besides paying for data recovery or manually downloading each CD again.

Thanks in advance.

a few weeks ago when I bought a new macbook after my old pc crashed.  I looked around and ended up using a program called senuti (itunes backwards), it was $18, which kind of sucks, but it was easy to use and worked great.  Cnet has a review out about it if you want to know more, here is a link to the software itself:

I actually also had a question relating to itunes and transfering.  I have an ipod Touch registered to a shared intunes account at my home, and I just got a MacBookPro.  I was wondering if there was anyway to transfer the music from the shared account onto a new one on a different computer.

I did this about ayear ago, what kind of iPod are you using?  If regular ipod (not touch) try this:

Basically, switch your ipod to manual update and enable disk use.

I've never tried this, but i've heard similar instructions before.  See if this might help:

I believe so.  I'm at work now and  unable to dig too deep, but I've taken music from my cousin's iTouch and put it on my laptop (not because I like to listen to Miley Cyrus, but bc she needed me to.  Okay, maybe I like Party in the USA)  Anyway, If no one digs up an appropriate answer, I can try and dig up something.

EDIT: GeauxBlue has got it right, I reckon.

Connect the iPod to your PC. If iTunes starts syncing (ie erasing) your music automatically, hit the X in the upper right hand corner of iTunes display, to the left of the search box, to stop it. In Control Panel, Portable Media Devices, double-click your iPod. In the Tools menu -> Options, in the View Tab, check "Show hidden files and folders." Navigate to the Music folder. On my 2nd gen 'pod, the full path is  Portable Media Devices\GINA'S IPOD (F:)\iPod_Control\Music Select all the music folders, and drag and drop them into a folder on your hard drive, or directly into iTunes.

As a relative dope when it comes to computer stuff that isn't email or general what have you this seems pretty simple and what I might try first.  I saw something online about this option that seemed to suggest that all the files will have generic names in that folder.  Does this mean I'll have to go through and re-name everything?  Not a huge deal versus the alternatives, but just curious.

And what the hell kind of dog is that?

I had to do this a few years ago, it was with an older Ipod, but I used an application called sharepod. It was free at the time, but I'm not sure if it works with the touch or if its even still available.  Good luck

Ipod Agent was a program I used, they want you to pay for it, but if it's just a one time thing, there's a few week trial you can use. You can also reveal hidden folders on your ipod while it's attached to your computer and pull the files off directly.
