...Only to be let go 3 years later as said enterprise sinks to the bottom of its field and is forced to take on his old job at a crummier location at a discount. Still, he'll get to tell his grandkids about the time he was a head coach for three years and went 10-26.

Okay, but let's actually think about this (which I don't think he did):

Michigan's defense is probably going to be as good as it was this year and possibly better. If Durkin sticks it out and improves, guess what? I'm betting there will be better jobs than Maryland available to him. Worst case scenario, the defense is about the same and guess what? There will probably be better jobs than Maryland available, ones where he has a much greater chance at success.

Like I said below: This just screams impulsive and thoughtless. He saw $$ and didn't think at all about the situation itself. Sure, he can comfort himself with a bed of money, but I'm guessing he has ambitions beyond that and he's put them in severe doubt.

A bird in hand is worth two in the bush. Opportunity is now. If he makes Maryland respectable, he will get many more offers, next time at a top tier school. He has been thinking about head coaching for years. Let's see how it plays out.

Yeah he'll make $$, to me, nonissue.

Would have been nice if he addressed himself more to the job he was hired to do HERE instead of pursuing his ambition midseason and on our dime.

the prospective employer will pay to bring them in for an interview.  Michigan hasn't paid a dime for his trip to College Park. To think that otherwise is wrong.

Durkin didn't just go from 500k to $1 million, he went to $2.5 mil, on average. Five times what he was making, and I'm sure there are other perks. No, I don't blame Durkin in the least. Sour grapes to wish he stayed. We didn't have this problem with Hoke's staff . . . because other than Montgomery (who left) and Mattison (who loved Michigan, retirement, and his family), no one was worth being poached.

Honestly, I hope we lose lots of coaches, because that's a sign they are good coaches worth being poached.

is completely possible that Durkin 1) made the right move for his family, 2) made the wrong move for his career, 3) was completely up front with Harbaugh, 4) completely sold us down the river, 5) provided a very good service while he was here, and 6) bailed on us the very week his services were needed most. He does not have to be JUST a hero or villain to us. He can be both, and it appears he is. For whatever reason people badly feel the need to compartmentalize this when it does not fit neatly into any container. People should probably be irritated by it and it does not make sense for other people to say there is nothing to be at all irked about. It is not a black and white situation.

so more like 313% not 500%+ but your overall point still stands and I can't blame him for taking a P5 head coaching gig somewhere else. He's such an insane competitor (I like to think anyone Harbaugh hires is) that I don't see him looking at the Maryland job objectively concerning better open jobs in the future. I'm sure he thinks wherever he took over he could turn them around and win, and if that's not how a coach like Durkin thinks, than they probably wouldn't be that high up in the coaching pecking order to begin with.
