OT - Detroit Sports Radio

Submitted by RONick on March 24th, 2010 at 6:38 PM

OK, so this has been discussed on here before some in terms of how terrible the sports talk radio shows are in the Detroit area. My question is this: Are there ANY good options for me to listen to on my drive home? I cannot stand the hacks on 97.1 and 1130 with Sharp makes me want to put a gun in my mouth. I can't get 1050 for some reason (I get better reception of 1050 in the Lansing area than I do in Royal Oak, go figure). Do I just have to stick to music? Or is there a decent sports talk show on somewhere?

for the ride home, i can't help you, but i am quite fond of karsch and anderson from 10 to 2, whenever i get a chance to listen in. valenti is a moron and foster seems to be just chillin in purgatory.

I love Karsch and Anderson and listen to Beligian on my way into work. I like the fact K&A don't take themselves too seriously and really seem to have fun. Baligian does really good hockey analysis and is pretty even keel with UM/MSU, even though he is a Sparty.

I don't mind Shep too much, but Assclown Sharp is on that show and I refuse to listen to him spew.

I have been listening to more music lately and it's keeping me calmer on my drive home. My wife appreciates...

I live in Indy, where the sports talk is even worse than Detroit. At least Stoney and Wojo were listenable! I bought Sirius in 04 and haven't looked back. Great NFL station, baseball, and Rivals Radio is all about college football and basketball. I would rather walk than listen to regular radio.

General rule of thumb: Never listen to a program that takes callers. 90% of the people that call in go something like this:

Caller: "Hi there. First time, long time. Love the show. I heard that we was gonna trade Sparky Anderson to the Mets for Tom Seaver, Babe Ruth, and Josh Gibson. I like the trade. I'll hang up and listen"

Host: "Okay, we were talking about Michigan football, but I'll answer that. Well, sir, considering two of them are dead, that's not gonna happen."

Next caller: "Uh, hi. You's a racist. You got something against Josh Gibson. GO WINGS!! WOOOOOOHOOOOOO!!!"

After about 3 rounds of this I'm ready to stick my head through a brick wall. And it's always about the same 19 callers every day.

"The Lions will never be any good until Ford sells" Gee, never heard that before.

"Dumars should have taken Carmelo Anthony" Really? Ya think?

"Mike Babcock should be fired" And replaced by whom? Reggie Dunlop?

"Tommy Amaker didn't get a fair shake" You're right Einstein. Neither did Ellerbe.

"Valenti...you're the voice of reason" At this point I'll do a swan dive off the Ambassador Bridge.

One word--Ipod. I listen to podcasts to and from work about all sorts of stuff and I have an hour commute.

Sports: MGoPodcast, Solid Verbal, ESPN

News: BBC World News

Economy: NPR Economy Podcast and Econ Talk

Other: Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me

I used to listen to Kylie and Booms in the afternoon about 5 years ago. After that, gouging out my eyes with kitchen utensils was better than what was local. Especially that horse's ass Simonson. Good Gravy was that awful. Now I podcast.

Sports-ish: Tony Kornheiser

Talk: Hour 1 of Rush Limbaugh (after that he can even be a bit overwhelming, even for a Reagan conservative such as I)

I go through the same thing with Detroit sports talk radio. I'm from the Royal Oak area too and driving home from work you have Shep and Sharp on 1130am and Valenti and Foster on 1270am or 97.1fm. Both shows are anti-Michigan, pro-MSU. I guess we're screwed. Although 1130am has Ryan Ermanni in the mornings, who I feel is a good Michigan man.
