OT: David Wright (Mets) wearing Michigan jersey during Spring Training

Submitted by goblue12 on

For those baseball fans on the board, apparently David Wright (a Virginia native) bet against Michigan in the Sugar Bowl. Jeff Wilpon (Michigan Man & Mets owner) apparently took him up on that bet and now he is wearing a #16 Denard jersey during Spring Training... I saw this and thought it was pretty funny and kind of awesome!

had an opportunity to meet Fred Wilpon and see him speak to a small group last year... in the middle of the comments his phone rang, for which he apologized. the interesting part? his ringtone was "Hail to the Victors".  (btw i think Fred is the majority owner, his son jeff is COO, but it might be a shared family ownership, not positive.)  too bad the mets are an awful baseball team.

what's known by many on this blog.  The Wilpons were enmeshed in the Madoff mess.  At a minimum, they took a big paper loss; however, it may be much worse for them.  The Madoff trustee is seeking upwards of $400 million, alleging that the Wilpons were overall winnders in the scheme AND that they knew (or at least should have known) about the manipulations.  The Mets have been penny poor every since this has hit.  They have not tried to sign anyone of consequence for two seasons; have traded a couple of stars, and did not make a real attempt to maintain Jose Reyes.  The Wilpons are trying to bring in some minority stockholders to bring in some cash, but in the meantime have had to borrow money, including some from MLB.   There have been lots of stories about this, including this one yesterday:  http://www.nytimes.com/2012/02/27/sports/baseball/a-glimpse-into-what-c…

Mets fans are my favorites! No fanbase is better at turning on their own team and heckling them into oblivion than Mets fans. It's like their favorite kind of game is when the bullpen blows a big lead.
