OT: Christmas or Hannukkah Present / Gift You Always Wanted But Never Got.

Submitted by Lakeyale13 on

Just a fun / light Holiday topic. I always wanted a pair of Jordans as a youngster.  I am 41 now, and literally bought my first pair (Air Jordan 1 Retro Premiums) as an early gift to myself.  So what is the one gift you always wanted but never got, and would you buy it for yourself now?  Nothing like trying to heal childhood wounds as an adult.  LOL.

I desperately wanted an Easy-Bake Oven as a little girl. I have always been very interested in cooking and baking. My mom? Not so much, which I'm guessing is why I never got one. I asked for one 5 years in a row before I finally gave up. Now that I have my own home and family I bake a lot and make sure to include my kids if they want to help.

I really wanted that air craft carrier bad!! My best friend ended up getting it, so it was like it was mine too. Unfortunately the next year my parents got divoreced and my Dad ended up getting it for me but it was to late, I wanted a Nintendo so he got that for me too. I feel bad taking advantage of my Dad at that time but what's a kid to do?

Him and I talk everyday and have a great relationship in case any of you were wondering LOL!

I wanted a frilly canopy bed that in my mind a princess would have.  Never got one. Now I don't even like beds with a footboard as they make changing the sheets more difficult. My mom must have known what she was up against changing sheets and the canopy fabric and thought better of the idea.

I dreamed for years of running down to the tree one morning and seeing a puppy or a dog with a Christmas bow waiting for me. Due to my dad's aversion and my mom not wanting to deal with the responsibility, this never happened. I did finally get my own dog this year and I have a feeling should I start kids and have a family, they'll get a dog under the tree one year.

I do find the psychology pretty amazing, and profoundly strong, around "not getting" a certain something for Christmas.  There is obviously more happening in the human brian that just processing recieving or not recieving a certain gift.

I personally don't have a recollection of a present unrequited. But my husband's family was pretty austere, by choice not necessity, and he usually only got things he needed (or his mother thought he needed) like clothes for nice occasions. If he wanted something fun, he had to buy it himself. So.....he now has a menagerie of bobbleheads and posed sports action figures like Walter Payton and Brian Urlacher. Our kids think it's a little weird, but I always remind them that he didn't have it as easy as they do, and everyone deserves to have fun, even middle aged men. Live and let live.

There were two:

1) Transformers JetFire toy (first generation -- because that's how old I was). I just liked F14s.

2) Shogun Warriors Dragun -- I had Great Mazinga (gen 3, I think -- spaceship/brain was not removable) and Godzilla, and later got Raydeen.  But Dragun was the one with the ninja stars and battle axes (both firing), and was the one that got away.

and now lowriders, with wider rear tires, sissy bars and ape hanger handlebars.  I had what could best be called the prototypical paperboy bike, with a metal mesh basket on the front.  It was pretty, uh, sturdy.  Zero wheelies.

Never got anything cool in a bike until much later in life.

It was the first motorized tank that shot plastic shells. My parents thought it was too dangerous! They got me a non motorized tank instead.

I made up for it years later by buying my nephew a motorized tank! Had a great Christmas playing with it!
