OT: Charles Rogers owes the Lions 6.1 Million
As if things couldn't get worse for Ex-MSU star Charles Rogers, a judge has decided he owes the Detroit Lions 6.1 Million in signing bonus money. Ouch! http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/blog/shutdown_corner/post/Detroit-draft-bus…-?urn=nfl,232705
Who isn't owed $6.1 million from Charles Rogers?
Chances they actually see that? ZERO
and you won't get money from someone who is on step from declaring bankruptcy.
It doesn't help them with the cap anymore anyway.
I am not a Lion fans but this is a clear indictment of Millen. How could he draft someone #2 who they knew had failed so many drug tests in college they had to put a provision in his contract?
Its not like he was ever on Calvin Johnson's level where everyone knew the was the best player in the draft. Rogers never did anything to merit him be selected that high with all his red flags.
"Generally speaking, you don't bet on the idea that habitual drug offenders will clean up their acts when they come into millions of dollars and loads of free time."
Easy to shake your head in retrospect but Rogers was a game breaker coming out of college.
And who knows what might have happened if he didn't have toothpick shoulders.
I mean, we tried putting David Terrel on him just to try to stop him. So yeah, did he turn out worth the #2 pick in the draft, no, but could he have been a top 3 WR in the league, I think so.
we put terrell on plax when he was tearing us up in 1999??? rogers didn't even play in 2000 (terrell's last year at michigan) because of academics...
When he wanted to be. I was desperately hoping the Lions would pass on Rogers - watched him drop too many passes in college. I think that pick was made more as a sop to the local fans who'd just watched the team completely crater than as a properly-researched selection.
were selections made by the detroit media. I am still happy to this day that the lions didn't pick up Tom Brady in the late rounds; he certainly would not be dating then marrying supermodels, if he were a lion.
That news is worse for his 7 kids and dealer(s).
I realize he is a Sparty, but do you guys not feel badly for him? His life is completely f'd because he hung out with a few too many of his boys from East Lansing. 7 kids, wasting 55 million dollars, out of the NFL, drug addict, been in jail multiple times. I'm surprised the guy is still trucking along.
Feel bad for him, seriously? He could have been set the rest of his life, but instead he couldn't say no to mary jane or learn to wear a rain coat. Not a chance I feel bad for him
I feel bad for his kids, not Charles. Hopefully they all took their mother's last name so that they don't have to be reminded of their dumbass dad everyday.
Ever listen to the song 'A boy named Sue'? Things works out well in the song...
for people who have been dealt a shitty hand(s) in life. I have zero sympathy for someone who through their own choices and actions, completely ruins their life. Charles Rogers has no one to blame but himself for how much of a fuck up he is.
Your avatar is awesome.
Ricky: The thing with kids and growings and getting learnings and stuff is that... You can't lie to them. Basically, if you wanna tell the children they can't do something they're gonna want to do it more. When I was young I did all kinds of crazy shit and I turned out wicked. That's because my dad was fuckin' cool, he let me do shit. I was allowed to drive his car around the park, basically took my dirt bike to school, let me grow dope in his shed in grade 7. You know, that's what good parenting is all about. You gotta let them have a bit of freedom.
Ricky is an excellent father
Those are the choices you make. That is a lot of money to blow.
Look at Plaxico Burress...and he had 10 successful NFL years to grow up and he makes a dumbass move like that.
Yea I don't feel bad for him.. He had the world handed to him.. Anyway where was he seen last? Passed out in that diner where he was arrested for being shitfaced in public and violating his probation... This all coming after he had his huge interview on ESPN detailing how his life is back on track and he was looking to get back to the NFL..
across North America will feel the effects of this ruling....Marijuana farmers, that is.
"I'm Charles Rogers. I owe $6.1 million and had 93 days in jail. I'm Charles Rogers."
God, I was praying to MohamJesBuddhaZoltan that the Lions would draft Andre Johnson over Charles No-Collarbone Rogers. Bah.
Well, I personally feel bad for him. Not that I have been in his situation before, but I imagine getting 13 million dollars when your an immature 21 year old isn't very easy. Every person matures at different stages of life, and I imagine the peer pressure of partying, drugs, and the pressures of football got to him.
Just because someone is an extraordinary athlete, does not mean they are extraordinary person. And I imagine before Charles realized his life was spinning out of control, it was too late. Obviously he has no one to blame but himself, but that doesn't stop me from at least feeling partially bad for him.
I know what you're saying, but very few people wouldn't be thrilled to have 13 million at 21.
So in installments of $20 a month, he's going to declare bankruptcy and probably pay nothing. He probably has zero dollars left.
Sorry Lions, but I don't think Charles will ever have $6.1 million to give you.
All leagues should abolish signing bonuses or the agents should insist that they be non-refundable. Agents negotiate huge bonuses to get around the cap and to get as much money as possible up front and then the teams try to get back every penny that they can once a player is gone.
It's hard to have any sympathy for Rogers or any Spartan for that matter, but it's even harder to have any for the front office of any NFL team.
I can't help thinking that the freep would be all over it if this was an ex-UM player, though.
