OT: Challenge Detroit Voting Ends at Midnight

For those of you who may not know, Challenge Detroit is an exciting fellowship opportunity for recent college graduates to live, work, and play for one year in the city of Detroit! They work to address poverty and pressing communiy revitalization issues as well as small business development. More information can be found at: www.challengedetroit.org

 

I have decided to apply for this fellowship and would appreciate your MGoSupport as a semifinalist if you are on Facebook! I went to three Michigan football home games last season and while I did not attend the univesity I am a loyal fan. We have several employees who are either part of this or have done it and they have nothing but rave reviews of the organization behind Challenge Detroit, not to mention great experiences in a city where - despite what some may believe - great experiences can be had, including ones where you give of yourself.

I was a fellow in the second year of Challenge Detroit. While the program itself has good intentions -- namely to infuse the city with bright and entrepreneurial individuals -- Challenge Detroit has some major flaws I'd heavily consider before jumping on the bandwagon.

Firstly, the initiation process to the program is deplorable: it's a social media popularity contest that a) does not, in any way, measure an individuals potential to an organization and b) intentionally drives Challenge Detroit's marketing to appear as both an "elite" program, when in actuality, it's merit and status derive primarily from the demand that the application process encourages. Challenge Detroit is not a Fulbright scholarship, and nobody outside of a tiny bubble of metro-Detroiters will treat it as anything but an interesting note on your resume. 

Challenge Detroit also does not pay you well, at all. When I was a fellow, I got a $30,000 salary for the full year (which is now minimum wage in Seattle and New York State).  Maybe this aspect has changed, but I guarantee you that with your college degree you can be making more money at something you are passionate about.  

If your true passion is to revitalize Detroit than do it. But if it's not, spend your time doing something you love and are passionate about -- that will get you much further in your career and in your life.

This piost is riddled with self-righteous bullshit. Although I agree with the nature of the Facebook Vote--and there are tons of those things that appear on this board, BTW--the rest of what you say is googled shit.

Firstly--is that even a word?

30 Grand out of college? Not bad, and again it's to do something good. As for your contention that there just might be job opportunity after job opportunity out there that pays more for the work you love--again, fucking bullshit. And how is anything going to get hinm further than the Challenge Detroit?

For fuck's sake--your "Michigan Degree" is regarded, as is the CD thing--really well in that region--but outside that, who gives a rat's ass about where your degree is from?

More self righteous, pretentious shit on a message boared. That's why these things are the LAST place to come for any advice.
