OT: Butch Jones doesn't care about Stars

Submitted by Sac Fly on

This guy is just the gift that keeps on giving.

When asked about recruiting Jones said he doesn't care about stars, “We’ve spoken about the competitive nature, and I think that’s really, really big in today’s world,” Jones said. "Everyone gets into the whole two-star, three-star, four-star, five-star thing. The only five-star that we even concern ourselves with is a five-star heart."

“Here’s the difference… and watch what I’m about to say… and I don’t care who likes it or who don’t. Butch Jones can coach football. He’s a flat out football coach and he can win in this conference. If you bring in Harbaugh, I think Harbaugh can get you a Big Ten Championship. I think Butch Jones could take you to the playoffs.

The funny thing is that he actually had me going there for a while until I got to that last sentence. Then he just lost me entirely. I get what he's trying to do, but he just can't help but continue to inadvertently make fun of himself.

I wonder what Tennessee fans think about recruiting stars....

At the end of 2014 season I was so fed up with Brady and his constant bullshit stories of how practice was amazing because he could hear football.  I hate to say it, because Hoke is a great person, but the guy was a clueless head football coach.  Every week he would essentially say the same exact thing, "We've gotta do a better job coaching."  Every fucking week.  Dave Brandon did this university a great disservice, though in the end, I don't much care bc we were able to get Jim Harbaugh to come back to Michigan, due mostly to his shortcomings.

That quote was super cheesy, but I'm sure no coach actually "cares about stars." Obviously they want the best players according to their staff's evaluation, which usually just so happen to align with the recruits with the most stars.

How many years will Volunteers fans be willing to accept "But we tried an, in the end, isn't that what matters?" as an explanation for the otherwise inexplicable loss? I am willing to bet that it isn't terribly long.

Well he did ride the coattail of Brian Kelly for most of his head coaching career. Tennessee is the first job he took that wasn't already in good shape. Add the fact that the terrible SEC east was ripe for the taking and, in typical Tennessee fashion they found a way to screw it up. But at least they finally beat Florida.

Isn't this the guy that  said something last year about winning the most important game, "the game of life." Not sure exactly what his contention was but it was basically with the same attention; to distract from the underperformance on the field it what seemed to me at attempt to prolong his job as long as possible regardless if he continually turns out players that he fails to develop fully or he's incapable of bringing all the pieces together to produce winning teams that should be a product of all that talent. And speaking of which, how the hell does he get all that talent?
