OT: Bud Selig Released a Statement

Submitted by Seth9 on

The Tigers radio broadcasters just said that Bud Selig released a statement. The important parts are that Selig is still reviewing whether the call can and should be reversed and will be consulting with various entities with regard to the issue, and that he will be reopening consideration as to whether instant replay should be expanded.

At least he hasn't closed the door, I suppose.

Hmmm...

If that's the entire statement, then I don't see where he addressed overturning the call one way or the other. The only thing he addressed is the expanded use of instant replay.

People seem to be infering things from that statement that might not be accurate.

And I have to wonder whether the ambiguity was intentional.

I see nothing in the statement in which Selig explicitly says that he will not reverse the call. Does anyone know if he addressed the issue separately or are the headlines simply inaccurate?

This ESPN story makes things slightly clearer:

Selig said Thursday that Major League Baseball will look at expanded replay and umpiring, but didn't specifically address umpire Jim Joyce's botched call Wednesday night.

A baseball official familiar with the decision confirmed to The Associated Press that the call was not being reversed. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because that element was not included in Selig's statement.

Is the full text of the statement available somewhere?  I haven't seen it, only the article.

edit: nevermind, it's probably on the MLB link there now that I think about it, I just can't see it at work for whatever reason.

Give me a damn break.  I love baseball. However, what I detest about it is the human error and the gutless administration of the league. MLB's administration has sat by while roids ravaged the sport. Damn fair play as long as the dollars are flowing from the long ball. It only took a congressional hearing for the league to get its act together. This is also a league that lets the member unions take it behind the woodshed during contraction negotiations. The umpire union went on strike before replay was added for home runs. I love fair play. I love when the right calls are made and confirmed by replay. Replay has been sucessful in every league. Who gives a shit if it adds 5 minutes to a game. You can get another beer in that time.

... from the hidden Bud-Cam, the Commish working on a new replay recipe:

Last I checked, Selig made over $18 million in 2007.  And he can't hit a curveball.

Selig and his ability to to show some kahunas about as much as I do the NCAA and how they operate. They are both examples of poorly run and useless organizations.

Do you really think Bud Selig is going to do the right thing? This spineless commissioner watched an All Star game end in a tie. He also sat back as roided up batters stole a record of Roger Maris that had stood for 37 years yet was broken by two different players in the same year. McGuire's record of 70 falling shortly after to Bonds. Also Hank Aaron against his will was cohersed in praising Bonds for breaking his record.

So Bud in a baseball era that has been all wrong and done nothing right, here is an oppurtunity to get something right. You have turned your head and looked the other way long enough. Reverse the call so we can remember this game for the right reason and not just another black eye to baseball.

Well this sucks balls.

But at least Galarraga gets the distinction of being the only player in history to throw a 28-out perfect game!
