OT: Browns botch trade because they didn't call NFL headquarters in time

Submitted by UMxWolverines on
The Browns were going to trade a second and third round pick for AJ McCarron, which is stupid enough, but they blew it by not calling in the trade in time. Sorry MGrowOld...this incompetence must be growing quite old for you. Of all the Cleveland Browns in the world, they're the Cleveland Browniest. I just wish some of their suck would rub off on OSU. https://sports.yahoo.com/oh-browns-cleveland-mistake-means-trade-j-mcca…

I've been following this story quite closely.  A few interesting nuggets this morning to consider.  And remember that the Browns have executed more trades than any other team in the NFL since Sashi Brown took over as GM.  But somehow yesterday they "forgot" how to do one per NFL rules?  Sorry not buying it.

Wide speculation here in Cleveland is that this trade was rammed through by Haslam to support HC Hue Jackson over the objections of our FO who then slow-played the paperwork intentionally to keep the trade from going through.  This FO value draft picks more than their own children but they'd be willing to give up a 2 and a 3 for AJ McCarron?  No way in fucking hell.

Benjamin Albright just released some emails via the Twitters he claims he got from Browns coaches Monday night after the JG trade went down with SF which are incredibly damming if accurate.  This place is about to explode.......

Does Haslam have a history of interfering with the front office? If you hire guys I would think that the best option is to let them do their job, and if that means they stockpile draft picks (which, as a neutral party, I think is a really good idea) then you let them do that.

I may have missed a run of good appearances by AJ McCarron, but in my opinion there's no way that he is worth a 2 and a 3, especially for a team that is a lot further away from winning than just modestly upgrading the QB position.

And QB trades are weird anyway. It's surprising to see so many. Because QBs have to learn an entirely new offense when they change teams (sometimes less awful if the two staffs both use similar philosophies and vocabularies, but still), which means that they're limited out of the gate. I guess Sam Bradford kinda demonstrated that guys can go to new teams with no preseason leadup and win, but Bradford is a better QB than McCarron and unlike Cleveland or SF Minnesota was in a position to win right away.

Sure does sound like the FO might have deliberately sabotaged this, just because of how stupid the trade sounds.

Local Browns reporter Mary Kay Cabot just reported on 92.3 that the owner Jimmy Haslam was starting to "see" that the FO hasnt given Hue Jackson much to work with.  From passing on Carson Wentz & Deshaun Watson to signing Kenny Britt and the complete whiff on WRs in general there aint much to work with here right now.

Cabot is widely known to have as her "source" the owner himself so if she's reporting that it sounds to me like the FO is toast.  FWIW I would be fine with the present regime if they brought in a "football guy" to oversee things.  The Browns, despite their god-awful record, DO have quite a bit of talent on defense and are quietly putting a pretty good D on the field.

We just need a QB worse than people need air to live.

Crazy how bad that organization is. I heard today Sam Darnold will return to USC if the Browns have one of the top two picks. Damn college kids would take that risk just to avoid being drafted by the Browns.

He still hasn't capitalized on his chances. Missed open field tackles being the main problem. Other than that, what is he going to do 25 yards off the ball? It's a joke of a team and a joke of an organization

As bad as the Browns suck, I'm not sure being a backup to the Ginger Ninja is considered winning. What's worse, sitting behind a mediocre qb or starting for a garbage franchise? All of this in Ohio no less!! I'd almost feel bad for him if he weren't making $2.5 million a year and married to Katherine Webb.

Browns have no incentive to be competent because fans fill the stadium, watch games, and buy merch regardless. This owner and particular iteration of the team is historically inept.

I was in CLE recently and my friends were telling me attendance was still really good so second-hand knowledge for me on this season. Going for $20 ain't half bad (and worth it for the excuse to tailgate alone) but the season tickets and boxes need to suffer for a team to take notice. Hoarding draft picks is well and dandy but there's no effort to field a competitive team this year when you've got the QBs they're rolling out on Sundays.

They were discussing this on the radio down here in Atlanta this morning. They made a great point in all of this:

AJ McCarron had to be waking up this morning thanking the football gods that this trade fell through. While I'm sure he wants to play, I can't imagine any QB wants to go to a franchise that is notorious for ruining QB careers for the better part of 20 years. Along with ruining just about everything else associated with the game of football.

If I were him, I'd rather continue being a backup for a decent organization with a chance to start maybe down the road, or go to another respectable organization, than go to Cleveland with the opportunity to start, but knowing in the back of my mind that my career just took a nosedive off the ugly tree and hit every branch coming down.

If they were willing to spend a 2nd and a 3rd on McCarron, they couldn't outbid San Francisco (just a 2nd) for Garoppolo?  A much better QB for at worst the same price they were willing to pay for McCarron.  This does seem a bit like a n00b panicking after he found out that the 49ers got what appears to be a steal from the Patriots (of all people).

As a Steeler fan I sit back in amusement, and call out to the Browns to release Reginald, Roderick and then Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer.

Is giving a 2nd and 3rd for AJ McCarron. With 4 good QB’s available in next draft and you give up draft picks for an unproven QB? Head scratching emoji here.

Cincinnati is probably so pissed off. They were gonna get a 2nd and 3rd for a bad Qb? Easy trade for them.

Cleveland, not sure what they were thinking but their own stupidity saved them. Why trade away valuable assets for a Qb that takes your ceiling this year form 2 wins to 3 wins?
