OT- Bills CB Vontae Davis quits at half

Submitted by BryRich3 on

He put on his steer clothes and left. I can't remember ever hearing something like this before.

Meh. Most people dream of saying, "Fuck it. I'm done," and walking off the job. Some even go through with it. Davis just happens to be a football player who did it.

Though I'm sure all the talking heads and old farts will be apoplectic.

If you're done with football, you're done with football and no need to stick around any longer. It's a gutsy move and I'm good with that.

Of course, that's on the condition that he actually is done with the sport. We don't know what exactly went on behind closed doors, so I don't want to speculate but of course if it was more of an ego thing I might change my mind on it.

I don't blame the guy at all.

I've spent (wasted?) the last 16 years in western NY.

The Bills were lousy when I got here and they just keep getting worse.

The current ownership and front office is totally dysfunctional, even more than Detroit if you can believe it.

They also have this weird plan to make themselves into a regional/international team.

No wonder there are Steelers bars and fans all over the region.

I usually hate seeing almost anything to do with the NFL on this Board.  If it were up to me, I'd be less hostile to a few of the supposed "politics" posts, and more strict about "NFL" posts.  In more ways than I can count, I think the NFL is slowly hurting college football.

But this story was rather interesting, once you get past the Twitter postings about Davis "quitting," and realize that the guy is RETIRING.  It isn't a contract holdout; not an ego-tripping fight with a coach or an owner.  It just became clear to him that he no longer belonged on the field, and did not wish to play (and risk injury) without believing in himself.

I found his personal explanation to be amazingly articulate.  He made it clear that me meant no disrespect to his teammates or coaches.  He wanted to "walk away healthy..." rather than "embrace the warrior mentality and limp away too late."

High School is to prepare you for real life. Vonte clearly succeeded in his profession of choice. No more life lessons needed re: perseverance and hard work. He was no longer able to perform a hard ass job and left. Maybe a little tactless, but he explained himself well.

In case anyone came here wondering, StraightDave was banned and the subthread unpublished.

Apparently, some discussions - quite unexpectedly - bring out the racist POS in the odd person.

There’s been more than one occasion in the middle of the work day that I realized my heart wasn’t in it. If I had enough money to last me 4 lifetimes, like Vontae, I would have done the same thing. Finances being what they are, I had to settle for a 3 martini lunch and an afternoon nap.....

more power to him

I stopped watching the nfl, years ago.  Total waste of time.  But to each his own, I'd rather watch ANY college football game than the guys in the pros.  I'll try to watch Brady in the playoffs, that's it.

I moved to Buffalo in the early 2000's.  I really wanted to become a Bills fan after being a Lions fan for year.  They haven't given me anything to work with.

I went to the fights back in the 70's in Vegas. Hearns was on the card some other big names, 1 fighter got hit in the first round and started climbing out of the ring saying F this shit. The ref was trying to grab him to get him back in the ring. We all just sat there going what the hell is going on. He walked away, I guess not to be heard from again in the boxing ring.
