OT: Better be getting up early for class...The real "Death Storm 2011" hit

Submitted by M-Wolverine on

Looks like Winter Break is coming a week too late (though those Ann Arbor School District kids are already off...)...8-9" in the Ann Arbor area. This one didn't stretch across the Country as much as the last one, but hit the AA area worse. It's deep, and it's the wet heavy stuff. And while (of course) the U is open, apparently as of early this morning, they haven't bothered to clear their sidewalks. No of the hype, but even more pain.

We got about 8" of snow too in the west side of the state. It was definitely worse than expected but definitely not as bad as the first storm. The first one took us two days to dig out of and got us class cancelled. This one didn't cancel class and we have already dug out.

The West side of Metro Detroit got hit pretty hard, and I understand the rest of the area got roughly the same. Wasn't it 55 degrees last week? At least this didn't just pile on to the existing snow.

We only got about 4" in NE corner of Hillsdale County, but have about a 1/2" of ice on top of that. The worse hit area for ice though was Lenawee and Monroe Counties.

Wonder how we missed out. Rained like a banshee yesterday and last night, just not cold enough for snow, I guess. If it had been snow, it would have been legend- (wait for it) -dary.

In Kzoo we got 13" from deathstorm and yesterday and last night we got minor snow and lots of ice. Trees down all over and close to 50,000 without power. I'll take the snow anyday.

I'm supposed to drive to Ann Arbor tonight for a job interview in Detroit tomorrow morning.

So, if y'all could do me a favor and clear all of the roads before I get there, that would be great.

Before 10 pm. So, they could have been doing it, oh, then. But that would require paying overtime. But I'm sure we'll have the funds for whatever monstrous work of art they want to put up next downtown.

Wonder if I didn't pay my property taxes and just said I'd get to it when I can, they'd be ok with that...

I always figured we just didn't own plow trucks.

It seems like AA has this passive-aggressive streak against drivers or something so they take pleasure in not plowing. I mean I can understand not paying OT to clear sidestreets, but they could at least clear Plymouth and other major roads.

I'm told the U will have its plows run down Fuller sometimes to clear the route from US-23 to the hospital because AA sucks so bad at plowing.

Also this is the time of year I love renting. My wife and I can stand there in front of the window, sipping out tea and watching my landlord and his repair guys shovel.

Me: Oh that looks miserable

Wife: More pancakes honey?

The official ceremony and the like will be in Korea this spring, but for legal purposes we got married back in November. When your student visa expires INS wants you out of the country almost immediately after graduation, so we got married and began the whole citizenship process before Xmas so she'll be a citizen long before the student visa expires.

So legally we're married but not wearing rings yet or anything until the ceremony, I tend to refer to her as my wife though.

Better looking version of me. I had be proposal plans for New Year's Eve in Orlando for the Cap 1 Bowl, but a couple week's before San Diego State's Masters program had thesis issues with her, and her student Visa was going to be up, so that went out the window. So a quicker marriage in Hell, on February 29th. In weather much like yesterday's.
It all worked out for the best. She's at U-M now. :-)

It's called Main for a reason, isn't it? I don't think it's ever even been plowed, no more salted.

And I don't buy the OT thing...they seem to have enough money for every goofy project they run to beautify Ann Arbor. Which would be fine if the city was rolling in dough, but if they can't afford to clear the streets, which I would rank in the Top 3 of city duties, they need to prioritize better. But lucky for them the elections are always right BEFORE the big snow hits.

But it is laughable. Higher property taxes than just about everywhere, but the worst street clearing west of Detroit. Had an office in Detroit, and family in Dearborn, and you can judge the Detroit to Dearborn and Canton to Washtenaw city limits by a line in snow. It would be funnier if I didn't have to help push out 4 stuck cars that made it impossible to get off my street this morning.

I think you are in the wrong forum. The people who get jobs driving snowplows after college are usually over at RCMB.

This week we got about 8 inches... in Ulsan, South Korea - an epic amount. Not snowplows or salt trucks here. My son woke up on his 10th birthday to a snow day = double-epic.

deal with it = plowing streets. crazy concept, i know. It's frustrating living in Ann Arbor when every other city in the area can clear their roads without a problem. However, here in the most populated area (also the center of commerce and employement) we can't handle 2" without coming to a halt.

Plowing the roads does make a huge difference. I think the mindset also makes a difference. In Marquette (and the rest of the UP I suppose) people see half a foot of snow and think "Hrm. Time to shovel." While in Ann Arbor people see 6" of snow and think "THE END IS NIGH. JESUS TAKE THE WHEEL!"

...that are posted on Scout and from the 3 I have seen, all are interested in getting out of the cold winters of the Midwest. Of course, that doesn't mean they will but as I have stated like a broken record, if given the opportunity, many of these kids want to leave the cold and play somewhere warm.

We were just in Boston and my wife's parents still have 2 feet of snow on their lawn and another couple of inches are supposed to fall today and tomorrow. Of course, we got out of there before we were asked to shovel the entire place again.

It started snowing here in Adrian just after noon, and when it did, it didn't mess around. After the snow came the sleet, then the rain, then the ice. I laid in bed at 12:30 this morning and I could literally hear the limbs snapping off of trees. At times it sounded like someone was dragging a cardboard box across the neighbor's driveway.

If I had to guess, 2/3 of Adrian is still without power, including all of downtown. They're not expected to get power restored until Wednesday or Thursday. I saw a power pole completely broken in half:
