OT: Best streaming service

Submitted by BlueCE on

Hey all, I know this was talked about in the past but I tried using the search and I get no results (i.e. searching for "roku" / just see ads).  Up to this point I have been streaming Netflix or football games by hooking up my computer to the TV.  However, I was looking for a better way to do it without having to connect the computer each time.  All I am looking for is to easily stream Netflix and use a web browser to stream football games (since I don't have cable).  If we could stream Amazon/HBO as well that would be awesome.  Trying to not break the bank. I do not have a high-end TV (at least yet) so likely superb resolution on the stream is likely not to make a difference. Trying to get it in place to watch some of the World Cup (will it be free to stream?).

What do you suggest? Apple TV, Roku, Amazon Fire?? I had Chromecast and it really didn't work.

Thanks

I use Apple TV and Chromecast. The Chromecast I use is a first generation and still works great. Both Apple TV and Chomecast allow me to use youtube.tv - which has my live/local channels and takes care of 99% of my sports viewing.

We have been using PS Vue on our Roku 4 for well over a year now and have been very pleased with it.  We get the lowest tier (no BTN) during non-basketball/football months then add the BTN tier again in the fall.

I really don't know why Sony won't rename PS Vue to Sony Vue as so many people erroneously think you need a PlayStation to get it.

I went with Hulu 3 years ago. As long as they keep the Big 10 network, I'll keep them. My wife likes having more cable TV options with Hulu.  For the sports package, I was paying close to $300/mo with my cable company. I still keep their high speed internet which is only $80.00 month, so I cut my bill in half.

Roku has been great for streaming but i use my parent's Xfinity password which allows me to use ESPN, FOX, & BTN apps as though i was living in Michigan.  the espn app sucks by the way but it works in a pinch when the game isn't broadcast on the west coast.  the FOX app is much more stable.

Amazon FireStick/TV is great for all streaming applications and has web browser functionality.

As an aside, you can "jailbreak" your firestick and use applications such as Terrarium (what I currently use) or Kodi (might be defunct now) to stream any movie or tv show. Plenty of youtube videos out there to show you how to do it.

I use a streaming service called The Players Klub. Runs off of perfect viewer on my android box. Pay $5/month and get US, Canada, Australia and UK channels, as well as MLB, NHL, NFL and NBA sports packages, along with some other bells and whistles.

I use Apple TV and its fine, although I have never tried using a web browser on it. You just download the apps and sign in one time. I stream Netflix, HBO, Amazon, Showtime, Fubo, YouTube, and PBS all the time. Also, I stream on my iPad a lot.

Dont know about streaming options for the WC. Since Fox is broadcasting in the states, as long as you get the FS1 channels you should be able to watch most (if not all) of the matches live. I am sure FIFA has some offer on their website to buy a package that includes streaming anytime, highlights, interviews, etc. Heck, I suspect there is a World Cup app on the Apple Store that will stream games.

I don't know if there is a best OTT streaming service.  I actually signed up for DirecTV last year despite having put together all of the deals for an OTT "TV Everywhere" streaming service.

I don't know if there are differences in quality between PSVue and DirecTV Now, but if I were to cut the cord again, I  would use one of them during football season B1G Network and ESPN and then dump them after the national championship game.   After that I'd rotating between Netflix, HBO GO, Showtime and Hulu while I binge watch each show.  I've had them all in the past.  I have Prime as well, but mainly for the shipping.  They've had a couple of good shows.

YouTube--> I hear the Cobra Kai show is good.

If you live in the Charter service area, they have this deal where you pay what works out to an additional $32/month over their base Internet service fee for cable.  You get FSD, BTN, ESPN, FSN, local networks and a bunch of other stuff.  You get one cable box in that price, and no DVR, although you can watch on other TVs via the Charter app on Roku (not available on fire stick though).  Best deal I've seen, plus you get cable reliability (ironically though my cable was down for the first three hours of the MSU game last fall, so I watched on the app).

Last Fall, I had a Roku stick streaming Hulu, and the service was piss poor during Michigan games.  I switched to the Apple TV 4K later on, and Hulu ran much, much better.

I highly recommend the Apple TV 4K. The remote kind of sucks, but the flyby screensavers are stunning and worth watching alone.

Can I get YouTube TV and use with Amazon Prime?  Seems like one requires Chromecast and the other a fitestick.  I don't care about buying both, but can I set them up together

I have tried directv now. It’s pretty good. We have directv satellite service. I can not get rid of it. I tried canceling and they ended up giving me enough credits for 15 bucks a month for one year.  No contract agreement either.  I have watched games on streaming services at friends houses and it’s crap in my opinion.  I can tell right away that they are streaming.  I’m not sold on the technology yet I guess.

I signed up for YouTube TV a couple weeks ago and have been happy with it so far.  I run it off a chromebox hooked up to my TV and have watched on my iphone.  I haven't tried it yet using the phone to chromecast but may give that a go tonight for fun.  For $40 a month it's an OK value.

I have Hulu with live TV and it seems fine.  It has all the important channels including BTN.  With the service you get all the TV and movies that are a part of the standard hulu package. Only $40/mo too.
