OT: Best new music you have discovered in the last year
Judgement free zone here. Just curious what new music everyone here has been listening to, and what about that band do you enjoy.
The only new band ive had any real interest in has been Silversun Pickups. Mostly because i have always had a thing for rock bands that use alot of distortion to create an emotional layer to their music. They arent ground breaking artists or anything, just remind me of listening to older Smashing Pumpkins a little bit.
Now your turn, give me some of your personal new favorites. Hopefully we can all broaden our musical horizons a little bit.
Pat the bunny is my idol. I love that man as much as I've ever loved anything in my life.
As far as new music I've gotten into recently Pat the Bunny got me into Ceschi. He's wonderful.
Fetty Wap. Completely serious.

I feel like I see a lot of (probably older?) guys on here complaining about how there's no
"real" music made with "real" instruments today. Here's a few recommendations for you guys!
Tame Impala: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B6CZTDCb7g4
Mac Demarco: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0HQqXllXpfQ
The War on Drugs: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qOfIN7XBl-4
Well old people should certainly enjoy the Tame Impala song since it sounds like a direct ripoff of the Beatles.
I also like Deftones, young whippersnapper. (See: below) You can't help if your voice sounds like John Lennon and you make good songs.
As i'm coming up on my 37th birthday, i appreciate being called a young whippersnapper. Thank you.
Eh, that's mainly the vocals imo. Change the singer and I bet you wouldn't be saying that.
Finally somebody says Tame Impala! I also enjoy their fellow Aussies Jagwar Ma. I am relatively old for this board (I assume) but like Magnus said above, there's always good music being made. Sometimes (late 90s) you just have to look a little harder.
Agree 100%! If you like Tame Impala and don't know who Jagwar Ma is, then you are doing music wrong! Both amazing live!
tame impala and war on drugs, both great stuff

Ahh - I am one of the biggest fans of the Wombats and I just can't get into the newest album. I want to love it, but it hasn't clicked yet with me. The Struts - on the other hand - have been my new guilty pleasure for sometime now. I got really lucky to see their first U.S. show and fell in love with them instantly. I just can't get enough of them. The lead singer was born to do what he's doing. Really reminded me of the first time I heard the Darkness - Zane Lowe played The Darkness video for 'Get Your Hand Off Of My Woman' on MTV's Subteranean and I had no idea if that video was brand new or from the 70's. The Struts are definitely bringing the fun back to rock.
I just started getting into a few Modest Mouse albums this year after working with a couple of guys who listen to them all the time. It gets better every time I listen.

Maynard's too busy with his wine.
oh man lateralus. holy crap that was a good album
Fidlar. They remind me of a more hard core MGMT. Listen to the song "Why Generation."
FIDLAR is so underrated. "40oz on Repeat" might be one of the best music videos ever. Such a great song. Love those guys!
Also Within Temptation.

Do you work for Pitchfork?
....besides my pretentious snobby list??
No, but that is a common question. Unfortunately they've ceded control over there to a bunch of hip hop lovers.
a moon shaped pool gets better every time i listen to it. i was not so sure on my first listen (other than burn the witch)
I get the whole repeated listenings open up the record and now I love it thing, but not for me. If there isn;t a hook that grabs me on listen 1 I don't really have the time or patience to listen 3-4 more times until its mysteries are revealed to me. Wish I did.
Exactly
Of Monsters and Men and The Lumineers had solid CDs too
saw sufjan at the masonic in detroit last year. it changed my whole perspective on carrie & lowell. he played the whole album, but with a full band arrangement and a ton of samples and synth - super interesting. now when i listen to the album, i really get what he was trying to do with the recording.
Yeah he really opened up the arrangements of the Carrie and Lowell songs on that tour. 4th of July and the 12 minute version of Blue Bucket of Gold were especially good. One of the best shows I've seen.
Joanna Newsom is one voice I cannot get past....
I'm surprised by the reaction to Julien Erlich's voice. Pitchfork mentioned it too but I loved it right away. There are some voices where I know it's going to be a hurdle for a lot of people, Wild Beasts and Joanna Newsom being two prime examples. I just don't see it with Erlich. It's high pitched/falsetto'ish but I don't think it's annoying.
Daughter - Youth is one of my favorite songs. Not to Disappear is very good too.
It is Japanese Breakfast not Japanese Candy.
Yeah I wrote that down wrong.
Not To Disappear is good but I do feel like they might be headed for stagnation. Loved the EP's and the first full length. This album is good but they can't repeat this again or they'll run into the same issue Beach House did on their two albums last year.
