OT: Bert/Bret Bielema's un-SEC-like DUI punishment

Submitted by FormAFarkingWall on

Bret Bielema is addressing a recent DWI incident involving a Razorback player in very strong contrast to many other SEC institutions:

Bielema said he talked to Beanum's mother to help determine a proper, or additional, punishment.  "For instance, I've taken away his car," Bielema said.

He soon-to-be sophomore wasn’t kicked off the team, but had team activities limited and some additional tasks handed out, Bielema said. Beanum he will have to complete university requirements as well as his coach’s to return to the team on a full-time basis. Bielema said he talked to Beanum’s mother to help to determine a proper, or additional, punishment.

Two typos in one paragraph...ouch.

"Then the player rose up, and rent his jersey, and having shaven his head fell down upon the ground and worshiped, and said: 'Naked I came into the SEC, and naked shall I return thither; the bagman giveth, and the bagman hath taketh away. As it hath pleased the bagman, so it is done. Blessed be the name of the SEC'"...

Good thing he didn't do something as bad as smoking a joint.  Then they would have had to come down hard on him.

In all seriousness I'm glad people are starting to treat DUI's with more severity.  A one game suspension doesn't really fit the crime, IMO, given how dangerous drinking and driving is.  Taking away the car is a great additional measure, though I wonder if his license was suspended anyway.

was not one of them.  He did a good job at Wisconsin and they were foolish to let things get to the point where he would walk away.

The Badgers have now let two good coaches leave.  Alvarez is the one who has overstayed.  He is too engaged and hasn't given the coaches what they need to suceed in today's world.  They will try to play catch up but that's a dangerous game.  Once you lose momentum it is hard to get it back.  We've learned the hard way that having an AD who thinks he should have an active hand in how the football team is run can do lots of damage.

Not really seeing the similarity between Brandon and Alvarez.  Alvarez is former championship winning coach, who went on to become AD - whereupon he successfully hired two consecutive coaches who have competed for and/or won B10 championships. Bielema and Anderson's departures seem to be more related to Alvarez's unwillingness to aggressive raise coaches salaries, which was not an issue under Brandon.

The problem with drinking and driving is you don't realize how serious it is until you get in hot water. I knew straight A super gifted friends in high school who'd drive home drunk each weekend because they didn't want to get in trouble. I knew a really sweet girl who drove drunk one time over a summer break and got pulled over.
