OT-Benchwarmers

Submitted by IA-Maize on
As an individual that was always on the bench in school I have often wondered this. Have any of you won a H.S. championship while never contributing on the court/field etc. in any meaningful way? If you have, did you ever brag about winning?

When I was a freshman on the varsity lacrosse team in high school (funny they moved me up but I probably played about 15 minutes the whole 20-something game season) we made it to the state semi-finals and had an 18-3 season overall. And no, I didn't brag. I talked about how good our team was, but I didn't make it sound like it was any accomplishment on my part.

I was the sole third stringer on my middle school basketball team. We went undefeated, and won the tournament between the schools feeding into my highschool. I usually just brag about the fact that I played on the same middle school team as the eventual Mr. Basketball.

Hi. I'm 85 years old and sit on on the fifty yard line. My butt gets really cold when I sit on it and do nothing for three hours at the games. Could someone please tell me where I could get one of these benchwarmers so my butt isn't so cold? Oh, and I almost forgot: DOWN IN FRONT!!!!!

I was a non-contributor to a Big 10 championship team. No, I didn't brag (except now?).

"Brag" isn't the right word. We won the division championship in swimming my junior and senior years, but nobody really brags about swimming. It's not exactly a high-profile sport. Me, I was definitely a non-contributor to the actual division meet my junior year. I wasn't a "benchwarmer" because most everyone swam, but I didn't qualify for finals junior year and so scored zero points in the division meet. I still "basked in the glow" of it, so to speak. I was just as happy as anyone to win. It's not like it brought us fame fortune and women though. Still, I get where this is going. Winning championships and not contributing anything sucks. So I made it my overarching goal senior year to qualify for finals at the division meet. Having done so, even though it brought just one point to the team, is a hundred thousand times more satisfying than if I hadn't made it.

I was not part of this but it is an interesting story anyway. My brother was the 6th man of his high school b-ball team and was/is kind of hot-head. One of those walk to his own drum kind of guys. The team was stacked and the guys were so competative that they never got along....a lot of the time anyway. During the 7th or so game of the year, one of the seniors was ripping into an underclassmen and my bro did not appreciate his counterpart doing that. Brother then went to coach during free throws and said that if so and so did not quit being a dick, he would walk off the court. He told the coach to sub for him or he would walk. No sub.....walk. About 30 seconds later my brother walks to the end of the bench and unties his shoes during a dead ball. Quits that night after a meeting with coach. He then sits next to me at the Breslin center to watch that team he walked away from WIN the State Championship. He was as content as ever watching from 40 rows up. I would have given my left nut to be a part of a team like that, but he just did not enjoy playing that sport. (the same guys were State runners up in football that fall, so he knew what fun was and it was on the grid-iron) There is no excuse for his behavior, but man it makes for a good story. All of those guys, for the most part, are friends now since they grew up and got out of the small town. Sorry, this story did not really fall under the category of the thread but is kind of relative....right....?

I played in the intramural championship basketball game last night. I joined the team this year but the core group has won 3 straight titles and has never lost. We lost. Our best three guys went about 1-20 from deep (not exaggerating) and we lost by four. The past few years I have been one of the best players on my IM team but this year I was the 6th man. It was weird but these guys were so much more fun to play with that it was worth it. The funny thing is that they named the team "We Will Four-pete" The irony is so thick I can taste it. No I would not brag about being an IM champ either. Even if I put up 50 pts and hit the game winner in the 6th OT.

my freshman year i played jv water polo all year, but when it came down to the playoffs my coach decided to have me travel with the varisty team. I rode the bench for all of playoffs. Next year our team sucked because of no returning starters.

I was on the wrestling team freshman year of highschool. I was 5'6" and 95 pounds. The other guy in my weight class was half a foot shorter and much stronger. Our team went to the tournament and won 1st place in team score and 2nd place in individuals. Of course, I didn't make the trip to the tournament, and the only way I contributed was by being comic relief anytime I wrestled.

In high school, I helped our track team win the conference title by competing in three events. I finished last or next to last in all three, but I earned our team points all the same, and it put us over the top. Wooo!

This is a bit of a fluff answer, but I've been on both sides of this...toward the end of the bench on a good high school basketball team and played every minute on a state championship soccer team. I know you're talking about contributing on the field, but those guys who never took the warmups off contributed plenty in pushing others in practice for playing time and occasionally stepping in when there were injuries, and can brag in a "our team was sweet" kind of way.
