OT: Bama fan has concerns for "foreign" qb

Submitted by The Baughz on

Saw this on twitter. I was in tears. This post is in regards to Bama freshman QB Tua Tagovailoa, A 5* from Hawaii. Enjoy.

Alabama has a freshman quarterback from Hawaii, and at least one fan is concerned

would have trouble with his classes at Bama.

Of course that poster wasn't thinking things through, but you need to learn English to graduate in Hawaii. They're making an effort to keep the Hawaiian language alive, but not to that extent. Tua's clearly not an ethnic Hawaiian, Samoan I think.

I had a client in LA tell me about how his brother lived in Hawaii, met a nice Hawaiian gal, and how he "brought to the United States" when they moved to NYC and got married.

Did you read the letter the southern mom sent to her son?

Dear Son,
I'm writing this slow 'cause I know you can't read fast. We don't live where we did when you left. Your dad read in the paper that most accidents happen within twenty miles of home, so we moved. Won't be able to send you the address as the last Arkansas family that lived here took the numbers with them for their house, so they wouldn't have to change their address.
About your sister, she had a baby this morning. I haven't found out whether if it is a boy or a girl so don't know if you are an Aunt or Uncle. Three of your friends went off the bridge in a pickup. One was driving and the other two were in the back. The driver got out. He rolled down the window and swam to safery. The other 2 drowned. They couldn't get the tail gate down.
Not much more news this time. Nothing much happened. If you don't get this letter, please let me know and I will send another one.
Love, Ma

This is like that thread on 247 making fun of how stupid the RCMB and bucknuts posters are without realizing the sarcasm/"humor"/obvious trolling in said post, with all irony lost on the person who doesn't recognize it and copypastes, as he is the true dumb-dumb.

Although it is probably something you could eventually find on a lot of fan boards if a given team had this player, it somehow stands out when it comes off an Alabama board, especially when it someone displaying a rather frightening lack of knowledge about the geographic makeup of their own nation. It's funny, sure, but you almost feel bad for a dude whose board post becomes a meme unto itself. Almost.

Guy said he was in Nam. The US was in the Vietnam War from 1965-1973. Meaning he is at minimum this guy is 62 years old (if he was 18 in 1973 and one of the youngest there). Which means he was born in 1955 at the latest. Hawaii was granted statehood in 1959. This means that Hawaii has been a state for his entire life, and more than likely was an event that should be well within his memory range.

There's one part of me thinking this is a joke by some guy attempting to troll.

And then there's the other part of me that thinks this could be true. In which case it must be written by some guy sitting in a trailer park in Podunk, AL, wrapped tightly in his confederate flag, waiting for Robert E. Lee to rise from the dead and lead the glorious South to secession, finally getting revenge on those damn yankees.

It won't be too long after that where Grant and Sherman rise from the dead to put the South back in it's place....

I know everyone wants to believe that this is real, but it's grade A trolling. I'm sure somewhere there is someone who thinks this but they do not use the internet (except for Facebook) and are much older than Vietnam veterans.

This makes me think they should build a wall around Alabama.  Keep them to themselves and "homegrown".  If only they didn't have such good football recruits to try and grab.

Many Bama fans think the OP (of the Bama thread) is a genius troll. I went back and read his old posts. Here is what I learned:

1) He is not an English professor (or any other profession that requires a modest mastery of the English language);

2) He loves Bama; and

3) He has never before exhibited a particularly subtle or sophisticated sense of humor.

My (highly speculative) conclusion: OP was legitimately concerned that Tua could not speak English. After all, Bama has a history of admitting football players who have academic deficits. I am thinking, of course, of Forrest Gump.

170 comments on an OT thread during football season, especially one including square dancing, we are really way out there on this one; toss out the guidelines on OT threads during football season.

I usually enjoy everyone's commentary and rarely post, but sometimes it seems necessary to point out that some people around this blog are entirely too full of themselves. The responses to the thread are every bit as egalitarian as any of the responses our members post to one of our sparty/bucknut threads. We laugh at the idea of Michigan arrogance being a thing, but damn, some of you don't see just how ridiculous you look when you bite on every tiny opportunity to condemn a population. I'm sure you're all protesting for unity though.

Same folks condemning Alabamans and profiling them would have a cow if done to others. Too bad logic and reason are not held in esteem any longer on College Campi Puritanical, reactionary bigotry while exhbiting false moral superiority is not a good look but one that the worst zealots from the Middle Ages would admire. Sad reaction to a likely false flag planted to demean people you neither know, yet judge. And I have met plenty of Graduate Degree holders who think the Mumbai Holiday Inn is roughing it. And that organic farming will feed 3 billion poor people. Ignorance Ain't just a Bama prollem.

To most Bama fans if you aren't from LA (Lower Alabama) you are looked at like someone from another planet.

Plus, as someone who moved to the south years ago it does take some time to really understand the suthern' language, it only has a vague resemblence to English... :-))
