OT: Austin Jackson early returns

Submitted by Maximinus Thrax on
I am interested to hear other Tiger fans opinions on the Jackson/Granderson trade as we can now look at it somewhat in retrospect. Considering only on-field performance for the time being (as Granderson was deservedly praised by many for his numerous off-field contributions to his community), I think it looks pretty good so far. I accept that Jackson's average will most likely fall as the season goes on. But as of now, Jackson is hitting .314 with 1 homer and 6 RBI, while Curtis is hitting .231 with 2 hr and 7 RBI. Curtis has provided some timely hitting for the Yanks, while Jackson has been holding his own in center. Then comes their salaries: Jackson pulls in $400,000/yr., while Curtis makes I believe $5.5 million or so. My opinion is that so far, this trade looks like a genius move so far.

Did you see that link to Victor Wang's article? Its findings wrt prospects are not unusual. Top 100 hitting prospects fail to be everyday players in the range of 75% of the time. As far as what BP doesn't give you, prior to hiring Colin Wyers and friends, BP fell waaay behind the saber curve. THT, Baseball Analysts, Phil Birnbaum, mgl and Tango have been at warp speed comparatively. Their stuff is all getting incorporated and used for analysis over at fangraphs. So the contact rate thing was initially a finding by Russ Carleton. He's now writing for BP as part of that Wyers group. Link to the summary at fangraphs: http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/index.php/when-samples-become-reliable/ If I don't cite everything it's because it takes time to find the citations. But like I've said, I read about baseball obsessively and I write occassionally. Most folks don't have the interest/time in reading the really dense saber stuff, so it's hard to talk about with a large crowd until it filters down as a standard analytic tool at BP or fangraphs or wherever. But I think you'll find that my reportage is pretty good. I'm not pulling these concepts out of thin air. They're borrowed from folks who consult for MLB clubs.

I read this somewhere deep in my dreams
In a surprise move the New York Yankees sent Curtis Granderson back to Detroit in return for 2 donkeys, a dolphin, and Drew Sharp. Hank Steinbrenner said that he really likes Drew Sharps smile and feels that he can ride the asses while punching dolphins.
Of course this was just a dream so don't take it out of context. And like Blue Voix said we probably won't know how good of a move this was until July.

AJax has been solid so far.  He needs to continue developing his eye and patience. There's no way he'll keep up his avg due to his high babip, and he's on pace for a MLB record K's in a season. He's shown solid D as well.

I was always more upset about dealing out Polanco and Edwin Jackson than I ever was about Granderson. Though I love Grandy, he has really struggled (offensively) and also got away from the batting strategies needed for a true lead-off hitter. On that note, Jackson has struck out more than just about anyone in the league up to now, but I'm still optimistic.

Here's to hoping we can close in on those Twins over this home stand.
