OT - Anyone know where to get a Michigan Winged bicycle helmet?

Submitted by ameed on
I like keeping my head intact while riding a bike. I also like Michigan. Does anyone know of any retailers (online or otherwise) that sell Bicycle helmets with the Winged Michigan design? I swear I have seen people in Ann Arbor with them before, though I am afraid they must have been custom made. Any leads would be appreciated.

The only way that I have ever even seen or looked into obtaining one is via custom paint jobs through certain companies, most of which will only do them for a large group. We almost got them for some helmets for the Triathlon Club my senior year. But, custom is the only way I have ever seen. Poll the masses, get a huge group that's interested. Call Bell, Giro, Louis Garneau, I'm sure they would do a mass order.

My wife and I each got one for gifts. They're more the bmx/skateboarding style helmet than regular bike helmet, but they definitely weren't custom ordered. I'll have to check the brand when I get home.

I have a custom made motorcycle winged helmet. I bought a solid blue helmet, a few rolls of yellow electrical tape and a good sharp knife. A few hours later, BOOM, a fantastic looking winged helmet.

I did mine myself. Many bike helmets have contours and geometry that actually lend themselves pretty readily to converting to a football helmet-like look. A couple of really poor pictures of mine: http://www.billwilliams.us/gallery/v/michigander/DSC01161.jpg.html?g2_i… http://www.billwilliams.us/gallery/v/michigander/DSC01208.jpg.html?g2_i… I did the base coat in maize, then taped it off with detailing tape, and over-coated in blue. Once it was dry, a couple of coats of sealer finished the deal. It's not the most professional job, but the price was certainly right. If you're interested, I could take some pictures of the helmet by itself to give you an idea what I did.

Strong to quite strong sir, that's definitely a sweet job. Thanks to everyone, but it looks as I feared that at some point I may need to attempt to make my own...

go to ebay and search for "michigan helmet decal" and you should find actual decals used for football helmets.  perhaps you can use those to modify your bike helmet.
