OT: any advice on where to get married in Ann Arbor?

Submitted by taistreetsmyhero on

I recently popped the question, and my newly minted mgofiance and I are hoping to get married somewhere in Ann Arbor next May. She already rejected the obvious first choice, so now I'm looking to find the next best thing. Saw a thread from 2010 on here asking the same question, but I'm wondering if anybody has some new or different advice.

We'd prefer an outdoor ceremony, and we're both heathens so the venue won't be a church. We checked out the botanical gardens and the coordinator there basically shot down a May wedding saying that nothing is in bloom by then and it would be a waste. The Arb is beautiful but is a logistically terrible place for a wedding apparently. We checked out the Ann Arbor City Club and were pretty impressed...

So, anybody had or been to some nice Ann Arbor weddings recently?

We had our ceremony in the  garden followed by dinner in the Hussey room and dancing in the Vandenburg room it didn't seem terribly expensive but we're ancient.

My wife and I had our reception in the lobby of the power center and it was a wonderful location, but you can't have any alcohol. We didn't realize that until we were already booked, but it was still pretty nice.

We got married at Wellers in Saline and have also been to several more there.  Great setting and they take care of everything.  I recommend it whenever someone asks.  It "shows well," which is all my wife and her entourage kept saying, so there's that.

Maybe I am weird but getting married in the Big House would not be ideal for me. Maybe it's because I wouldn't be able to stop thinking about Dave Brandon, or simply that Michigan Football is my own and my wife is not... on the same level, obsession wise, might just make it kinda weird. It's almost like Michigan is my side girlfriend, and I wouldn't want her at my wedding. Anyway my reception was at Reddeman Farms Golf course and was outstanding. The price was extremely reasonable, probably because it is a bit of a drive from the AA area. It's on Dancer Rd in Chelsea. http://reddemanfarmsgolfcourse.com/

Then went to the Law Quad for pictures.  It was on 9/11 in 2010 and it was

the only day available at Webers Inn.  We had a Fantastic Time, a large

formal wedding with all the bells and whistles.  Our friends and relatives

still talk about it being so nice.

When we got to Webers after the pictures, I remember we took our time

in the lobby to see Denard lead us to a 28-24 victory over Notre Dame.

A great way to start our new life together.

P.S  It wasn't cheap but worth every penny.

When I was a student back then. I'v seen students get married in Michigan League. It has nice small garden. Not sure if it can serve alcohol though.

My wife and I got married at the Greek Revival Shelter at Island Park.  It was right near the medical center.  On a little island in the middle of the river.  Was awesome.  Only cost us like 165 bucks for renting the park for the day.  Had the park from 6am-10pm.

We had our reception at Vinology downstairs in their bubble room.  Was very small and intimate.

I had a real good experience at cobblestone farm, though I don't recommend it if you're inviting more than 150 people. The UM art museum is the best wedding venue I've attended around town. I imagine it's pretty pricy though. Those 2 farms on scio church look like real nice settings too.

My wife and I got married at the Michigan Theater in 2008 and had a fantastic experience.  it's not your typical setting, but that appealed to us.  If you're open to a less traditional venue you should give it a look.

My wife and I, both MGoAlums, were married in the Vandenberg Room on the second floor of the Michigan League.  Our reception was across the concourse in the Hussey Room.  It is a beautiful space and I think weddings in the League are much better than in the Union.  The League is much less travelled and the event is more private.

For larger weddings, the League's ballroom is a good choice.

Good luck, congratulations, and of course, Go Blue!

Got married in Toledo, so I can't really help except to say plan a special place to go for photos. In this case, probably campus. The day will be insane, so a little private time with just the wedding party will be memorable.

We were married in my wife's church, photos at Toledo Museum of Art, Reception at Brandywine CC. All were great but harried. Photos were calm and fun.

Oh, and stop greeting people to eat your cake. Seriously, when they put the cake at your place setting, stop shaking hands and go eat it. THEY'LL TAKE IT!

I know you asked about a2, but a good alternative if you don't find anything is get married on the town square / park in nearby Plymouth and walk to Meeting House for the reception.

Michigan Union does a good job. Was married in AA NYE, and we did pictures at Nickels Arcade. It was great with the Christmas decorations and shop signs, etc.

We also got married in the Union. Small ceremony in August. Some very nice rooms in that building. Took pictures out front and in law quad. Had reception at Gandy Dancer and stayed at (that hotel on state and Huron).

The League would be cool too

But.... how will you have organ music if you don't get married in a church? Everyone agrees that's the best part of getting married. Congrats, by the way.

My wife and I got married at Matthei Botanical Gardens. Outskirts of the city, beautiful, and decently priced. Options for catering have to be on an approved catering list, but there are some excellent choices. And they won't serve liquor there (only beer and wine). While that's a deal breaker for some, it saved us a ton of money

I've been to weddings at Cobblestone Farm and at the Matthei Botanical Gardens and both were beautiful spots. Cobblestone Farm is especially nice if you want to have the wedding and reception in the same spot, as they have a very nice reception hall on the property as well.

Congrats! We got married in ann arbor in 2013 and did a ton of research on venues.

We ended up having our ceremony on Ingalls Mall (right next to Hill Auditorium where the bell tower is).  They let alums use it for basically free.

We then had our reception at the Kerrytown Farmers Market.  This was also pretty cheap to rent.  You go through the parks and rec to reserve.

We had our friday night welcome dinner at Island Park, which was also great and cheap to reserve.

All these places let us bring in our own catering, which was great.  The only downside was that Parks and Rec doesn't let you bring in hard liquor.
