OT: AAPD wants Skeeps' liquor license taken away

Submitted by ypsituckyboy on

According to a memo from the AAPD to the Liquor License Review Committee, the PD is recommending that Scorekeepers' liquor license not be be renewed. Police had to make 156 visits in 2017. Could be a sad day for many on this board, as that would surely put the place out of business.

I don't remember what night of the week it was, but I remember ridiculously cheap drinks early -- like a Long Island Ice Tea for $1 before 7PM or something like that - and each hour it would go up in price so I of course had to drink as many as I could before 7PM. I have no idea how I survived - it actually makes me cringe thinking about it.

I would never "act" that way. I'll just tell you flat out those places are shit holes. If thats your cup of tea, then that's fine, I won't judge. But if that's how an establishment chooses to operate they shouldn't be surprised when stuff like this happens.

Yup, it was.

Everyone has their own friends, activities, interests, etc. at Michigan. That is part of what makes the university so special and vibrant. I think our university has stuff for everyone.

Calling everyone who enjoys a place "annoying" is very on point for a segment of the mgoblog crowd.

For me, Skeeps was always a place to go with or join a friend group and enjoy some dirt cheap specials. It is/was not a great place to go to meet people if you don't know/like anyone there.

Don't worry. This being Ann Arbor and UM in 2018, it will probably be replaced with an upscale cocktail lounge featuring Edison bulbs, reclaimed wood tables, fine French absinthes, and bitcoin ATMs so our New York sorority girl can slide some cash out of her Dad's purse.

156 visits seems absurd. That's almost enough where the AAPD could hire someone with the job description of "Go to Skeeps' every night."

I wish there was a frame of reference for how many times AAPD had to visit other Ann Arbor bars.

That sucks, I never spent much time there, but when I was there, I thought it was fine for a college bar and better than many I've seen.  I think the AAPD is being short-sighted, it's not like the trouble is going to go away, it's just going to find somewhere else to go and somewhere the AAPD isn't used to.

I suspect you have to have one or two places where the young men who want to fight can assemble and do their thing. At least if you know where they are you can avoid them and the boys in blue can come prepared.

Disclaimer: I got wasted a lot during college but tended not to go to the fighting bars.

Speak for yourself. I always went to Scorekeepers for the ambiance and edifying conversation.

Indeed. The old Dooley's closed down for the same reason. Hell, my friends & I were early regulars when they opened the place back up as Scorekeepers. If memory serves, they opened back up in very late '91 after being dark for a couple years post-Dooley's closure. The early nights of the reincarnation were very slow in terms of crowd, but word of mouth spread rapidly. So many good times in that place. Too many to count. I hope they find a way to fix the problem.
