I saw the headline on Twitter and just assumed that there had to be a different guy named John Lynch who was more of a behind-the-scenes, FO type guy. Because there's no way they'd hire that John Lynch to be GM.

I do not have a single clue what John Lynch's qualifications are to be a NFL GM, except that clearly he doesn't mind being well below the HC & the owner's yes man (and maybe others?) on the Org chart, and he said yes to Jed, unlike EVERY experienced candidate. But even given that, he went to Stanford, not pedophile fuckin state, so DO NOT compare him to Matt fuckin Millen!

John Lynch went to Stanford and had a reputation as a player as one of the brightest players in the league. He worked in a successful and forward learning front office. Matt Millen had a great mustache. What am I missing?

Because he went to Stanford, he is automatically qualified to be a GM? He has never worked in any front office. He will learn on the job, just like Millen did. Sounds like you are missing a lot. I'm not saying he won't be successful, because no one knows, but with the people he will be working with and for, it doesn't sound very promising.

If you were replying to my anti-Jed,anti-pedophile rant, then I'd say Yes just the fact Lynch went to Stanford AUTOMATICALLY makes him smarter than Matt Millen. And as for whether he'll do a better job - could he do WORSE? The new HC (presumably Kyle Shanahan) will have all the power though, with the bass ackward way they've gone about this. Ah Jed...

I didn't like her in Glee, and she was horrible when she hosted Hollywood Game Night.  She did do a pretty good voiceover in Wreck-It Ralph, though.

All-in-all, I think she should stick to acting.

Fun fact about John Lynch. His jersey is on display at the Baseball Hall of Fame for throwing the first pitch for the Marlins Organization in 1992 as a member of the Erie Sailors.

I'm sure going from color commentator to GM will work out nicely for the 49ers.

You would think an organization in turmoil like the 49ers would go out and hire a guy with a successful track record. But Jed York is a turd. I hope Lynch does well though, he was one of my favorite players growing up.

What established front office type would agree to work for Jed York right now?  There's a reason he picked a guy that would jump from the booth right into the GM chair.  Same type of reason that Millen was hired - no established personality wanted that job.

I hope Lynch has a better career as a GM than Millen did, because he's a good person.  OTOH, I hope the 49er's continue to fail epicly!

Even if you think this guy has "Future HOF GM" written all over him, why wouln't you make him a "VP of Footbaww" or something and have a real, according-to-hoyle GM work under him for a few years while he learns the ropes? It makes no sense.

There's something about the 49ers hiring John Lynch as General Manager that makes me wonder if the next logical step for Jed York might be an inpatient program where he can finally get the care and monitoring that he needs.

Yeah, there's nothing about this hire that would inspire confidence in the organization if I were a 49ers fan.

His "owners don't get fired and I own the team" response when reporters questioned his accountability in the complete fucking collapse of the organization was priceless.  Very telling about who he is.  Oh by the way Jed, your Mommy owns the team, not you.  Should we ask her the question about why you aren't accountable? I actually feel worse for 49ers fans than Lions fans because it's gonna be a long road ahead with that douche calling the shots.

http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/when-asked-why-he-wouldnt-be-fired-the-49ers-owner-gives-a-simple-response/

Reporter 2: You dismissed your general manager and coach because they didn't reach certain performance standards.......Why shouldn't you be dismissed or reassigned for the same reasons?
Jed York: [blah blah blah......] I own this football team. You don't dismiss owners.

Except that HE doesn't own the team, his Mom does.  He's the CEO. And he's clashed with literally everyone he's worked with, even when they were going to NFC Championships and the Super Bowl.  When you run experienced coaches and GM's out of town during an extremely successful run only to immediately implode, that seems like a fair question.  Doesn't seem like something frustrated 49ers fans would want/expect to hear from their CEO.

Ok, you said "OT" but do people post every time a GM is hired in the NFL, NBA, or MLB?  What does this have to do with UM sports?

Have you ever left a job because the organization sucked and they didn't listen to you...And then everything went up in flames for the exact reasons you left and tried to warn them about? That's what's happening here. The 49ers' management/ownership incompetence delivered Harbaugh unto Michigan. This is schadenfreude at its best.

But if they're anything like the organizations I left they'll try and pin the blame on the upcoming shit-storm on the guy who left, not give him credit for seeing what's coming.

All I know i this move is that one of the NFL insiders tweeted that several of his "sources" said even the Browns were laughing at this move.  Nice to have somebody else be the butt of the league's jokes - even for just a day.

Notre Dame educated NFL "CEO" hires a guy to be his GM who has to learn on the job. He also has no personnel experience and is given a SIX YEAR CONTRACT HAHAHA HAHA. This reads like a Doonesbury cartoon. The upside is we get to enjoy at least a couple years worth of schadenfreude out of the 49ers. Lions need to get this team on their schedule as many times as possible. Wonder how many people didn't even bother to return Yorks calls for this job?

Whole Milk

January 30th, 2017 at 10:46 AM ^

I know what you were going for, but the Lions playing the 49ers a lot throughout this contract would be a bad sign for the Lions prospects. They will play twice simply based on playing everyone in the NFC west 2 out of the next 6 years. If they were to play other than that, it would be because they finished in the same place in their own division. Based on the trajectory of the SF team, it is likely that you would only play the 9ers if you were last or third (because the Rams also suck) in the NFC north for the immediate future. Not ideal as a fan.

I hope he fails for two reasons

1. To highlight just how stupid it was for the 49ers front office was to let their relationship with Harbaugh sour.

2. Because I find him annoying as a commentator and so that when he has to return to the booth after his failure, we have further proof in discrediting his commentary

Another funny element to this story is Lynch basically volunteered for the job. He was hired because no one else wanted anything to do with York. And York justifies the hire through ambiguous hoop jumping based in Lynch having had a distant past association with an old 49ers great. No rational person makes hiring decisions like this it is ABSURD and funny as hell. Everyone hates a silver spoon rich kid and watching an epic fail like York flounder is delicious.

Being a Tampa guy, I love Lynch. One hell of a football player and one of the hardest hitters I've ever seen, but the question of whether or not he's GM material remains to be seen. Has he ever held a front office position in the NFL? I could be dead wrong but last I checked all he's been doing is commentating.

Being a GM is not the type of role that afford you a lot of time to "learn on the job." Especially when your boss is an incompetent silver-spooned douche canoe.
