OT: 49ers hire John Lynch as GM (6-year deal).
This reminds at least one person of the Lions hiring Matt Millen:

I saw the headline on Twitter and just assumed that there had to be a different guy named John Lynch who was more of a behind-the-scenes, FO type guy. Because there's no way they'd hire that John Lynch to be GM.

This is like when I read that Reggie McKenzie is the GM in Oakland. Then I found out it was a different Reggie McKenzie.
January 30th, 2017 at 8:55 AM ^
To be fair, both Reggie McKenzies were former NFL players. But the one who's GM in Oakland spent 17 years as an executive with the Packers before becoming a GM, which is a far more normal career track than Lynch is taking.

Because he went to Stanford, he is automatically qualified to be a GM? He has never worked in any front office. He will learn on the job, just like Millen did. Sounds like you are missing a lot. I'm not saying he won't be successful, because no one knows, but with the people he will be working with and for, it doesn't sound very promising.
January 30th, 2017 at 9:28 AM ^
Since I'm presenting approximately 100% more information than you are - notwithstanding his experience in the Broncos FO - it's clear Lynch with one glance that he is more qualified than Matt Millen.
January 30th, 2017 at 10:08 AM ^
Front office, or any other front office. He went from the field to broadcasting. So you are offering 0% info to support your argument.

I didn't like her in Glee, and she was horrible when she hosted Hollywood Game Night. She did do a pretty good voiceover in Wreck-It Ralph, though.
All-in-all, I think she should stick to acting.

I mean... she connected the dots for him. You'd think he'd stick up for her now.

Fun fact about John Lynch. His jersey is on display at the Baseball Hall of Fame for throwing the first pitch for the Marlins Organization in 1992 as a member of the Erie Sailors.
I'm sure going from color commentator to GM will work out nicely for the 49ers.

What established front office type would agree to work for Jed York right now? There's a reason he picked a guy that would jump from the booth right into the GM chair. Same type of reason that Millen was hired - no established personality wanted that job.
I hope Lynch has a better career as a GM than Millen did, because he's a good person. OTOH, I hope the 49er's continue to fail epicly!

Great guy! He gave me a chance based on my tremendous background.
January 30th, 2017 at 8:22 AM ^
Even if you think this guy has "Future HOF GM" written all over him, why wouln't you make him a "VP of Footbaww" or something and have a real, according-to-hoyle GM work under him for a few years while he learns the ropes? It makes no sense.

There's something about the 49ers hiring John Lynch as General Manager that makes me wonder if the next logical step for Jed York might be an inpatient program where he can finally get the care and monitoring that he needs.
Yeah, there's nothing about this hire that would inspire confidence in the organization if I were a 49ers fan.
January 30th, 2017 at 9:19 AM ^
His "owners don't get fired and I own the team" response when reporters questioned his accountability in the complete fucking collapse of the organization was priceless. Very telling about who he is. Oh by the way Jed, your Mommy owns the team, not you. Should we ask her the question about why you aren't accountable? I actually feel worse for 49ers fans than Lions fans because it's gonna be a long road ahead with that douche calling the shots.

Except that HE doesn't own the team, his Mom does. He's the CEO. And he's clashed with literally everyone he's worked with, even when they were going to NFC Championships and the Super Bowl. When you run experienced coaches and GM's out of town during an extremely successful run only to immediately implode, that seems like a fair question. Doesn't seem like something frustrated 49ers fans would want/expect to hear from their CEO.
January 30th, 2017 at 9:29 AM ^
Ok, you said "OT" but do people post every time a GM is hired in the NFL, NBA, or MLB? What does this have to do with UM sports?
January 30th, 2017 at 9:33 AM ^
Probably because it's kinda hilarious watching Harbaugh's last organization implode, and this is yet another highly questionable move by the inept "owner" that was gracious enough to send Harbaugh our way. Not that far off topic IMO.
January 30th, 2017 at 9:37 AM ^
Nothing, but its funny to make fun of SF for being inept, as we owe being able to land Jim to that.

But if they're anything like the organizations I left they'll try and pin the blame on the upcoming shit-storm on the guy who left, not give him credit for seeing what's coming.
All I know i this move is that one of the NFL insiders tweeted that several of his "sources" said even the Browns were laughing at this move. Nice to have somebody else be the butt of the league's jokes - even for just a day.

Also because we want to annoy you.

I know what you were going for, but the Lions playing the 49ers a lot throughout this contract would be a bad sign for the Lions prospects. They will play twice simply based on playing everyone in the NFC west 2 out of the next 6 years. If they were to play other than that, it would be because they finished in the same place in their own division. Based on the trajectory of the SF team, it is likely that you would only play the 9ers if you were last or third (because the Rams also suck) in the NFC north for the immediate future. Not ideal as a fan.
January 30th, 2017 at 10:30 AM ^
I hope he fails for two reasons
1. To highlight just how stupid it was for the 49ers front office was to let their relationship with Harbaugh sour.
2. Because I find him annoying as a commentator and so that when he has to return to the booth after his failure, we have further proof in discrediting his commentary

With the 49ers ownership they almost have to reach out to people who are otherwise unemployable. If you're a top candidate you wait for another team, or get so much power/$ in your contract that the owners can't screw up what you want to do. York is an idiot.
January 30th, 2017 at 10:42 AM ^
Being a GM is not the type of role that afford you a lot of time to "learn on the job." Especially when your boss is an incompetent silver-spooned douche canoe.
