OT: 2017 Top 50 WR Tyjon Lindsey Announces Transfer from Nebraska

Intro/Summary

Some Thoughts

Michigan has been on the prowl for top-end WR talent, and he had a Michigan offer, so I thought I'd put this out there. Ohio State was thought to lead in his original recruitment before he pledged to Nebraska. He's on the shorter side (5'9), which might be a good fit for the future. If he was eligible for this year, I wouldn't post this up, with Gray and Jackson already in the fold.

Nebraska has been cleaning house of late, and Lindsey is the sixth transfer out of the top eight recruits from Nebraska's 2017 class rumored to be leaving. The young man's output hasn't been great, but then again, who on Nebraska team is having a good year?  His redshirt is preserved, as per the new 4-game rule. It could be argued that he's a bit of a head case, but with the kind of season Nebraska is having, and with all the other departures, this might be a perfectly rational decision from a good kid.

He's 5'-9" and 200 lbs. We're young and loaded at WR and short pretty much full for this recruiting class.  I'm sure he's a fine young man, but no thank you.

I agree with the "no thanks".  I dont blame kids for transferring under certain circumstances.  I am not one of these people that thinks a kid should ALWAYS stick it out.

GET OFF MY LAWN....etc

But in this particular case with the whole culture change happening there its at least a little concerning.  Plus he is not the prototypical receiver we are usually looking for.  And we already have a smaller guy coming in with Giles Jackson.

They think this will hurt them now, but starting around the 2020 season is when it's really going to hurt. Much like what we experienced last year, very few upperclassmen to lean on or draw leadership from. Just a dearth of talent at places where they're going to need it.

I expect Frost will have to rely on a lot of transfers and JuCos for these next couple of years, at least until he gets the depth of this team to where he wants it.

Good athlete, but I wouldn't be very interested in him. He was a teammate of Tate Martell at Bishop Gorman. I didn't get great vibes from Lindsey during the recruiting process.

“Michigan has been on the prowl for top-end WR talent, and he had a Michigan offer, so I thought I'd put this out there.”...didn’t we sign the highest rated WR recruiting class in school history just two cycles ago with DPJ, Collins, Black and Oliver?

Things are probably going to get worse for Nebraska before they get better. Frost is such a personality clash with Mike Riley so I'm not surprised that some of the guys recruited by Riley don't feel like they mesh well with Frost.

That being said, I do think Frost is still the guy to bring Nebraska back. He's got to destroy an entire rotting foundation, one that's been rotting for the better part of 20 years, and completely rebuild it from the ground up. I'm still surprised they haven't won a game, but I think he, his players, the fans, and a lot of outsiders will look back at this season, 4-5 years from now, and say that this whole season was necessary and had to happen for Nebraska to get itself back to being among the nation's best.

I think he's got to be given at least four years to get his program up and running. Remember that his UCF team had a lot of guys left over from George O'Leary's team that won a Fiesta Bowl, and it's in a state overflowing with talent. Rebuilding Nebraska in what is now arguably the deepest conference in America is a far bigger animal.

FYI, unless I'm missing something, Tyjon screwed himself over.  I made this point in the "Understanding the new Redshirt Rule" thread, but it's probably more on-topic here.

Redshirting doesn't help the kid unless he plans to play D-II next year.

You still only get five years from high school graduation to complete four years of eligibility.  So, if he transfers to a D-I school he still has to sit out due to the year-in-residence requirement... and that effectively costs him a year of eligibility due to the five-year rule, even though this year is a redshirt year.

Unless Nebraska is now offering degrees that you can complete in 15 months, I don't see this working out the way he expects.
