OT: 2014 NBA Mock Draft: Edition 1 out of a billion

Submitted by MGoManBall on

Yahoo has a mock draft out already after the NBA lottery last night. I know a million of these are put out and it's all just speculation, but it gives us something to talk about/debate.

This mock draft has Stauskas going to the Suns at 14 and McGary going to the Spurs at 30.

I think both of these picks would be great fits for them. The Suns love to score and adding an elite shooter who can create his own shots will only make them more dangerous. And thinking back to the NCAA tournament with McGary and Burke running the pick and roll to perfection, I also think that is a great fit for McGary at San Antonio running a similar style of offense with Tony Parker. He can learn from arguably the greatest 4 man to play the game in Tim Duncan and grow into a good NBA player.

No love for Robinson?

I almost posted this too.  It looks like good landing spots for both guys.  Nik's skill set and size seems like it would fit in with almost any system.  I would think Mitch would do cartwheels if he were drafted by the Spurs.  He's in a great position as it looks like he has the potential to be drafted by a number of good teams.

First off, it's always a blessing in disguise to be a late 1st-round pick, as that means you're going to a much better team. Second, SA has shown that they'll do their own evaluation to decide if a player is draftable. They took DeJuan Blair a few years ago despite his lack of ACLs. I think that'd be a real good fit.

No way Stauskas lasts until my Bulls pick... is there? EDIT: Just saw that the mock draft has the Bulls taking Harris. I'd much rather have Nik. With D Rose at 6' 3" and Butler there to guard the other team's best wing, and the Bulls lack of scoring, Nik would be a perfect fit.

I agree that Stauskas would fit a lot of places, but I think that playing under Hornacek in Phoenix would be especially good for him. Bledsoe and Gerald Green were able to produce way beyond expectations this year as scoring wings (particularly Green, who at 28 was basically residing in the NBA scrap heap up til now). Nik would face a bit of a logjam in the backcourt, but I think he'd ultimately be very productive on a team that's definitely on the rise.

CBS had Parrish and others put their mocks side-by-side here - LINK - and there are some intriguing differences among them. Parrish had Nik going at #11 to the Nuggets and Zach Harper actually pegged Stauskas at #12 going to Orlando.

Only one of these mentioned Glenn Robinson at all - Harper has GRIII going at #25 to Houston - and none of them had Mitch going in the first round. Gary Parrish, perhaps interestingly, had Mitch going at #35 to the Jazz, of all destinations.

76ers with two Top 10 picks.   That means they are going to have three multi-millionaires under the age of 20 years old starting... 20 years ago they'd be a Junior and two Sophomores in college.

Also @jeepinben

The funny thing to me is that Robinson played more like a 4 with his face up game and Duncan like a 5 with his methodical post work. Robinson was the incumbent at the 5 and it was just easier to market them as the ~two towers~ and assign the PF to the rookie.
On any other team and any other situation, Duncan would be the C in function and nomenclature.

I think referring to him as a PF at this stage in his career is just convenient for him; it's easier to unseat Karl Malone as the greatest PF of all time than Chamberlain and Hakeem and Kareem and Shaq as Cs.

Exum deal, it is just so Darko, and like 50 other imports over the last 10 years.  He is going 4 and yet his scouting report is "he is just a mystery" and many GMs traveled to Australia "to watch him practice."  We talking bout practice!  Not the game.  Maybe he has serious game, but why the fuss over him?  It is this weird flavor of the week thing in both football and basketball drafts.  What is known about this guy that would make him the Number 4 pick in the draft?

it does occassionally, but you would think that this kid is some kind of international phenom.  I had not heard of Dante Exum until Monday, like 2 days ago Monday, and all of the sudden he is this household name.  I don't know, I you-tubed the guy, and I saw a lot of ballin against dudes who looked like they couldn't ball (and one really sick backdoor throw down with a tech-worthy rim hang but I digress).  He is a major wildcard.  At 10 maybe, OK, but 4?

more of a wildcard than others in the top two tiers, but he's been on the scene for at least a year.  Really made his name at the Nike Hoop Summit last year, but was getting heavy attention even before that.

and played in professional league at Australia.  He is not like Darko because he actually plays and there's more resources in international scouting than it was before.  It's not like he's some mystery prospect who surfaced in the last two months.  He has been on NBA's radar since 2012....

MCW, Parker, Stauskas and Noel would be a pretty interesting core. They would need some serious veteran help just to teach those guys how to play in the NBA, (ie the David West role on the Pacers), and Noel would have to develop into an elite rim protector, because none of the other three are going to stay in front of anyone, but they would likely be fun to watch on the offensive end.

I apologize, but since Pistons lost there pick, I just can't muster any enthusiasm for the draft. Only the Pistons can make there fans root for losing, to secure a nonexistent pick. Darn! But good luck to Nik, Mitch and GRIII. I guess the silver lining, they can't lose next year's top 10 pick!!

I wouldn't be suprised to see either Mitch or GRIII fall to us at 38, not sure we would take them though even if they did. There will be some nice International prospects on the board still with big upside, Bogdan Bogdanovic, Damien Inglis, Ioannis Papapetrou and Thanasis Antetokounmpo to name a few.

new thread worthy, so I'll throw this here:  Sviatsolav Mykhailiuk has decided to attend Kansas next year, according to Jonathon Givony of DraftExpress.  Highly sought after Euro-prospect.  Was rumored to have interest in Michigan at one point, although it never seemed serious.

There is also no way in hell that the bulls take a 7-0 Forward with their second pick in the first round. They have Mirotic overseas who is basically a point forward and a behemoth of a man. Ideally the Bulls roster next year is Rose, Butler, (either trade for a better 3 or hope to draft here), Gibson, Noah, and then have a rotation that brings in Mirotic for big minutes. I'd love to see Robinson go to the bulls at the 3
