OSU/MSU What to root for.

Submitted by WestQuad on

Walking into work this morning (NY State) two people seperately accosted me with a devilish "So you're rooting for Ohio State to win this weekend?"    I replied that I wouldn't mind seeing State lose, but that I was not rooting for Ohio State.   The Freep (no link) had an article asking former Michigan players if they were rooting for OSU and everyone except Jake Long and Jake Ryan said they definitely were not.

What is the best most clever retort to this catch 22 question?

see a moral issue with a minor ankle sprain wish, but I also don't see it as all that much of an advantage.  Losing one player often elevates the play of everybody else around him.  It is not until "decimation" begins (our offensive line) that injuries become all problematic.  OSU last year is a perfect example.  Barrett's absence elevated everybody else's play.

We're rooting for Ohio State because MSU winning means we have to root for Penn State next week and frankly I find that way more objectionable.

Also, rooting for OSU to win by enough that JT Barrett feels the need to celebrate.

U-M coach Jim Harbaugh was asked on the "Stoney and Bill Show" this morning on WXYT-FM (97.1) for what his late coach Bo Schembechler would be rooting in heaven.

"I think he'd be rooting for what's best for Michigan, like we all are" Harbaugh said. "You never know exactly what to root for, because you never know how things exactly play out, but it's pretty clear what's best for Michigan. First, if we take care of our business and let the chips fall where they may from there."

Wanting MSU to lose is in no way about jealousy or any other bullshit reasoning they can come up with. It is not a "moral victory" to see them lose this weekend. It's what has to happen for Michigan to control their own destiny in the division race.

Of course I didn't. I know it's cliche to say...but there's a big difference for me. Rooting for a team to win means that I'm cheering and high fiving plays made by that team I'm rooting for. No way I'm going to do that in OSUvMSU. I'm going to be watching silently hoping that OSU takes care of business.

...I will 100% be rooting for OSU. If it's a close game and they pull it out at the end, I will be actively cheering. OSU winning, in isolation, doesn't bring me any joy. Michigan playing a de facto division championship game brings me much joy. This is what I'm cheering for.

To a 4-6 team.

And I still don't care, just thinking of Urban Meyer and Ohio State with a chance to win two fucking championships in a row trumps everything for me.  I just don't want to think about it anymore.

that possibility is very real.  State is 9.  If they won out they would beat #4 and #5.  Leaving them at 7.  By way of their wins, they would jump whatever one loss Big 12 team remains at the end of the season. Florida loses to Bama.  State would be in.  They would not even need ND to lose.  If State beats OSU not only could they make the playoffs but it is very likely that they would.

The outcome of the Michigan game will determine my rooting interest for MSU vs. OSU.  If Michigan wins, I will root for Michigan State to have less points on the scoreboard at the end of the game.  If Michigan loses, I will shut down and I won't give a damn.

Analyzing all the various factors, I would

stipulate that we should be mindful of our empirical

tendencies to make emotional decisions.  We are potentialty

eligible to play in the conference title game but there is a

real and visceral dislike of both teams in the 3.30 game and

obviously this colors our outlook in that contest.  Both of teams wish us

ill tidings and the question of how much should we reciprocate the

disdain of these gutter trash programs is something worth considering.

kind of fun if Michigan State won this week.  Watch their fans get all excited, listen to their bullcrap all week.   And then.....

lost to Penn State at home next week sending Michigan to the Big Ten title game after we had beaten OSU earlier in the day.

I believe Harbaugh was quoted saying something like "I want what's best for Michigan".  Uh, yeah, I'll defer to the fearless leader.

I want a Michigan win and then for whatever is best for Michigan to happen in the later game between the evil empires from East Lansing and Columbus.

I'm very grateful that our game is before the other game. Although the party line historically is that teams focus only on themselves, I have to imagine a Michigan State victory prior to our game may have put a damper on our spirits. With the schedule the way it is, our team can focus exclusively on beating Penn State. Of course I want Ohio State to win. That is easy. I could not care less whether it is a pretty or ugly win. I have every intention of recording the second game, and not subjecting myself to the misery of emotionally investing in a team that is our sworn enemy 51 other weeks of the year.

From the Ohio State perspective

Ezekiel Elliott with your good buddy Bill.
He showed up, after an on campus speech, to Buckeye's practice facility and Urban made him put on a red jacket over his BLUE suit. Urban won't allow BLUE in the facilities.

Hopefully it's good luck for us on Saturday vs CFP ranked #9 SPARTY, then #12 MI and if we win out #5 Hawkeyes. Our season is finally starting.

You root for Michigan's best interest.  Tomorrow that means rooting for OSU.  That's easy for me because since I used to live in Lansing, I despise MSU.  I'd root for ISIS against MSU, unless MSU winning helped Michigan of course.

All we need to do is win Saturday and then move on. If we lose the last 2 weeks of what if or the playoffs are looking good, where we play when we beat OSU. Kinda sad and don't think Penn St is not taking notice. Might I remind you that our D has looked horrible the last few weeks and we have our hands full tomorrow.

Ask me Saturday at 329 eastern time. If we win? An osu victory with one week injuries to eziekel Elliot, Joey bosa and jt Barrett If we lose, same as above but rooting for state

I will never forget going to an MSU party and polling the crowd if they'd rather MSU win on a random Saturday or Michigan lose and they all chose Michigan losing.

In recent years past, where Michigan was out of contention for anything of significance, no doubt we would all root against Ohio St.  Semantics aside ("Ohio St. winning" vs. "Michigan St. losing") I don't understand how anybody here isn't rooting for an Ohio St. win over MSU.  Maybe some people just don't understand the implications of this game on Michigan's chances to make the B1G championship and subsequently the CFP.

I will not cheer for the Buckeyes. Ever. I hope the game is played in unbelievably shitty weather: wind, freezing rain, sleet and goes into 12 OT. And the dickhead refs who did the Michigan v. Sparty game are in the booth and on the field and about 5 Buckeyes are booted in the 2nd half for targeting including Bosa. AND thier whole f'ing team gets food poisoning for Thanksgiving. Just trying to be reslistic. Highly unlikely the toilet bowl in Columbus is hit with an asteroid.

On the last play of the game, MSU is down by 5 points. They've got the ball at mid-field. Buckeye fans are already celebrating in the stands. Cook rolls out, fires the Hail Mary and connects. After he throws the ball, Bosa launches himself at Cook drawing the questionable targetting foul. Bosa is held out of the first half of the Michigan game. When they get Cook to the sideline, even though he's fine and has no concussion, he fails the concussion test by not being able to add 2 and 2. STAEE, thinking their Hail Mary victory sets them up for the East Division title comes back to earth when Cook is held out of the PSU game. PSU wins, we run up an early first half lead sans Bosa and pick off Barrett thrice in the second half as OSU tries to pass their way back. Michigan wins the division outright.

If you are rooting for Michigan, then you are rooting for OSU.  Absolutely no shame in rooting for the events we need to happen to make the Big Ten Championship Game to happen.

I never get this. I hate OSU as much as anyone but I love Michigan more. If an OSU win is good for Michigan, then it's a no brainier. Is your loyalty to Michigan or to NOT-OSU? (Rhetorical you. Not "you" OP)
