OSU reports 22 NCAA violations in football, bball (247 article)

https://247sports.com/Article/Ohio-State-Buckeyes-NCAA-violations-recruiting-2020-Ryan-Day-football-basketball-133889144/

From the article:

"22 NCAA violations Ohio State's football and men's basketball programs self-reported between May 1, 2017 and May 22, 2019. The athletic department reported 16 football violations and six men's basketball violations during the two-year period. The violations, which spanned from serious to absurd, were obtained by Eleven Warriors through several public records requests. The most recent request was fulfilled by the university on Monday."

The most curious for me were:

-financial aid overage (Lol, is that what they call paying players?)

-use of outside consultant (Is that what they call their bagman?),

-impermissible publicity and inducement (Does this mean it is a bad idea to show off your new car to your friends?),

-student athlete reinstatement (Does this mean that they actually require their players to play school to be reinstated?)

All kidding aside, none seemed too major, but this is also self-reporting.  I don't trust the OSU athletic department to be a reliable source in regards to their own integrity.

Athletes should be able to pursue any dealings that make them money while in school !

Then they should pay for their own education as well.  No more athletic scholarships and you get into UM on your own academic merit and earn an academic scholarship.  Student first, then athlete.

These kids live like fricking kings while at UM and live better than most Americans will in a lifetime.

No, thank you.  I can go watch Wayne State play if I want to see future accountants and lawyers play football.  Nothing wrong with that, but that is not what I and the rest of the American football loving public will pay for.  I want to see the absolute best players that are not yet eligible for the NFL.

"These kids live like fricking kings while at UM and live better than most Americans will in a lifetime."

Well, this is called capitalism.  These kids have a special talent than only 0.001% of Americans have, and moreover, our society values that talent highly and is willing to pay $$$ to watch them.  So they deserve whatever they can get: scholarships, sponsorship, marketing, etc...

I really don't get why capitalism is fine for the rest of us but not college athletes.

Your argument is ridiculous.  American society (for better or worse) is willing to spend billions of dollars to watch their colleges play high level football.  They are willing to spend that money because people love football, love their favorite schools and the players are freaking awesome.

Not very many people are willing to pay a lot of money to watch the other athletes - sorry, it is harsh but true.  I am willing to pay $200 per ticket to watch football and another $100 for my son to have a jersey.  I would probably pay $15 per ticket to watch those other sports and my schedule would have to be wide open to even go.

If those other athletes are able to generate multi-million sponsorships, then let them have at it.  I have no problem with that.

Lots of talented people make less money than less talented people - it simply depends on how much someone is willing to pay for your services.  You can try to pretend that is not the case but that is life.

The current system has maybe 3 years left - players will be getting stipends and NIL rights no later than 2023.  You can take that to the bank - figuratively and literally.

I will never understand this thinking. You act like they just hangout and party win not playing games, and they just show up on Saturdays and play football. You wouldn't last 2 weeks being a Division 1 football player. The amount of time training and abuse these guys inflict on their bodies can't really be measured. The thing people forget is less than 5% will actually play professionally. Please don't give me the, they get an education argument, because some of them will also get broken and torn body parts, to go along with head, neck or back injuries. They earn their keep.

I don’t think anyone is saying they don’t work hard. Classroom, field, community.  However, to think football players don’t get to enjoy and experience more luxuries than the average student then you’re just being naive.

Nobody is saying the experience between a football player and an average student is equal. The point is that football players are not average students, which is why a blog can make money off of people willing to come and talk about said players all day. Its like Eisen roughly put it, people across the world don't get all excited to put on their M gear and sing HTTV because the debate team has a tournament or there's a soccer game.

I lasted 4 years and was happy with my degree without debt, which got me the six fig/year job I have now sooooo there’s that.

These millennials all y’all about using tax dollars to forgive student debt so I guess a scholarship has some monetary value no?

They are paid in  the form of a scholarship and cost of attendance.

this the current rules,  if the NCAA wants to change the rules for everyone then so be it

until that time schools that pay players outside of the rules thereby gaining an unfair advantage over schools that follow the aforementioned rules should be punished.

I also offer that “players are talented and should get paid” is an oversimplification of a very complex system which has been developed over a number of decades.  And is subject to federally enforced mandates.  Title IX would enforce all institutions receiving federal funds i.e. FASFA to promote equality amongst all sports including female. So it’s not as simple as pay football and basketball players colleges would have to pay women’s crew and the fencing team as well.  This reasonably could lead to an outcome of 1/colleges dissolving many athletic programs, causing many student athletes to lose scholarships and 2/ division 1 football and basketball members would probably drop to lower levels and there would be really about 1/3 of the programs that currently exist, imagine college football FBS had only 40-50 members would kind of not be entertaining.

So before I get roasted I can say I’m not against the idea of increased compensation for these athletes but rather that standing on a soap box and demonizing college sports without acknowledging the complexity or offering some well thought out plan is kind of futile and willfully ignorant.

my solution: let players get paid for own likeness and signature but that money must be placed in a trust to be dispersed upon graduation or leaving school where once a player accesses the funds his eligibility is forfeited.

Sounds like a well thought out model man, the hustle/free for all method, I’m sure there won’t be any point shaving or corruption there.  I’m always impressed by the intelligence displayed in your posts can’t wait to read more of them.

What point shaving or corruption would my idea induce that isn't already possible ? Point shaving could very easily occur now. All that would be required is a player who could keep his mouth shut.

I think it's funny when our coach calls out a team and coach for controversy and then something like this happens immediately after.

It's an affirmation for sure. While the violations are probably not serious its also not a glowing review.

Wow the NCAA is going to throw the BOOK at them.

Oh wait. Which school was it?

Ah yes, nevermind.

Back to your regularly scheduled MGoBoard programming...

The mighty Shawnee State Bears? In Portsmouth, Ohio, once home of the Portsmouth Spartans before they moved up north and became the Detroit Lions?

Yeah, my wife is from the area. Otherwise I'd have never heard of it.

I would like to see which program the NCAA punishes for Ohio State's football violations, what with Shawnee State not having a football team and all.

I'm from the area so was surprised to see ssu mentioned.  Its actually one of the best video game designers schools in the country.  The rest of the area is a giant pill mill. But michigan fame Branch Rickey is from here. Along with quite a few baseball players. Don Gullet, al Oliver,  gene tenace to name a few.

Well yeah... Nobody minds self-reporting when they take a cookie from the jar. It's when people keep quiet about taking the whole tray when you have problems.

Also - Urban Meyer DID NOTHING to stop domestic abuse from his coaching staff from happening when he clearly knew about it. I'm sure the statue of him is in design as we speak.

All schools self report minor violations as OSU did but what I found interesting was how they agreed to stop recruiting Micah Parsons who ended up at PSU.  What would be ironic is possibly Parsons having huge games against OSU and possibly costing them a B1G title with a key play or two. At one time Parsons was all OSU and suddenly communication between him and OSU stopped. Now we know why.
