OSU may possibly be good at basketball

OSU beats MSU 80-64. Hmm

You’ve obviously never coached at any level. You let that score set in with your team. It’s motivation, it’s a lesson, it’s a reason to show up to practice on Monday with a desire to get better. It has nothing to do with trying to win at the end. If you think Izzo can’t coach then man, your homer glasses are a wee bit too thick.

one of those years, where there isn't a clear 'best team in the county'.  March Madness is looking really wide open.

And I really like JB's teams in March.

Those are his players. They looked like ass for the last handful of years too under matta. He was a good coach in his prime though

Clearly the medical issues he was dealing with were affecting him physically and mentally and his teams starting fading in his last four seasons, with consecutive first weekend exits followed by two missed Dances.  That Holtmann is having the success he is today points to OSU's recent underchievement as an issue with Matta and not the players.

Not having Bates-Diop for most of last year and a weaker Big Ten seems to be the most reasonable explanation. Keita Bates-Diop is their best player. He was hurt for most of last year. Take him off this year's team, and I think the results and your assessment of the situation would be much different.

I forgot about KBD being lost for the year so you're right that him being around probably would've changed the trajectory of last season.  However, I still think Matta was fading as a coach as OSU was hemorrhaging players to transfer, and there was that incident at a booster event where Matta trashed the outgoing guys.  I mean, OSU lost their entire 2015 five man recruiting class (four to transfer, one quit the team).  Seemed like the culture of the basketball program had gotten a little toxic under him.

I think both of you are right. Losing KBD was a big blow last year, but even if he was playing, that OSU team is a 9 or a 10 seed at best. Unfortunately for Matta, OSU basketball had a 5 year trend of having a worse record than the year before. Two or three years in a row, and ok, fine, keep him around and let him fix it, but five years in a row? He wasn't fixing it. OSU had the No. 2 draft pick in the country three years ago and barely made the tournament, then got washed out in the second round. And that was OSU's best season in the last five years. Matta pushed OSU basketball to the top of the mountain, but it started to slide back down the hill and he was unable to stop it. At some point your accomplishments from 2007-2012 matter less and what you're doing right now seals your fate. Matta is probably the second best coach in OSU basketball history. It sucks it ended the way it did.

Didn't get to see the game but glanced at the box score.  Interesting that, as in their Duke game, they just got abused by the opponent's top player - couldn't hold him in check at all.

My source who is a personal friend and very close to the situation has told me Matt Patricia is the new Lions Head Coach. I am new to Mgoblog so I don't believe I am allowed yet to start a thread.

Doubt he gets a years old reference....

FYI to our rookie devil dog, some years ago, some fuckface claimed insider knowledge pertaining to the destination of a much sought after football recruit that he learned from some other fuckface he was playing counterstrike with. Both fuckfaces were full of shit and wrong. So it has become a tradition around here for everyone to check with their counterstrike sources when rumors get floated....
