In this Michigan Insider podcast segment, Sam Webb details some of the responses from OSU commits and their parents in regards to the conclusion of the Meyer investigation.

All I have to say is "Wow." People on the boards on here have been talking about tribalism and complete disregard for facts and reality when your side is in the wrong and these reactions from recruits and their parents completely show that. You'd think the parents would show some apprehension to OSU, but nope

A recruit who wants to go pro and make some $$$ while in college will not care about this. Neither will the parents.

For the most part(not all)...I don't think I want the parents that go along with those kids, because if that's what the kid wants, the parents *might* want that money more than the kid does. I can definitely say I have no idea what that percentage is, but know it exists and I don't want any part of that attitude.

If you've done your homework, and you would if you cared about where your child goes to school/plays college ball, the red flags on Meyer go way back. People that didn't care about that stuff before, aren't going to care about this now.

When the goal is to get to the NFL his track record is good at every position but QB ... So they won’t really care about anything else

Absolutely, I don't know why anyone is surprised.  Frankly, I also think this doesn't reflect negatively on any of these recruits/parents, they are making a perfectly rational decision and we don't know what they've been told by the staff or how the issue has been framed for them by the staff.

Do you honestly think the coaching staff has given the parents an objective view of the facts to let them make up their minds, OR have they been feeding them the Urban party line of excuses and rationalizations?  I believe the latter even though I can't prove it.  So when I heard what Sam said this a.m. about parents' reactions, I wasn't surprised very much.  They've invested too much time mentally and emotionally in OSU with the recruiting process and don't want to hear the negative crap.

Come on now. Parents need to think beyond money. I Don't have high opinion of some of these parents. There is no excuse for looking the other way. I understand they are in a spot with the buckeye nation, but they need to have some civility. They can just have no comment if they are afraid to speak out.

Josh Harris, Alex Smith, Tim Tebow, Braxton Miller, Cardale Jones, JT Barrett? Sure, not all of them are in the league still and a one switched positions, but it's not like they didn't make the NFL. That's still better than 95% of college coaches.

How is the surprising exactly? Recruits care about going to NFL. He can get them there. Also try to understand the type of recruits who'd take this Liars pitch. Enough said.

For some, football is everything. Humanity be damned. The blatant disregard for any decency in the name of "winning" is whats most disappointing. Win at all cost. Shame.

People are saying it’s all about the money and the NFL, but it’s not like Georgia and Florida and Alabama and USC aren’t recruiting these kids. Nobody needs to go to OSU to make it to the NFL, that’s a crock of shit. They’re complicit too, and to Brian’s point from earlier this week, at this point, they’re the only ones with any ability to do something about it. Disgraceful

Yes, but he wins games. So if Georgia, florida, USC etc start winning more than OSU then yes, this can be a deciding factor (which lets be honest it won't be for a recruit).

Never mind that it took being a loser in life to become the winner on football field. Clearly lying, cheating, paying is all part of college football ethos at said programs.

Recruits view Georgia and Florida and Alabama and USC coaches as cut from the same cloth as Ohio State coaches.

They do what it takes to win, and they get players into the NFL.

Georgia and Florida and Alabama and USC et al are not some kind of escape from Ohio State.

It's a cynical business.  They get theirs and I get mine.  I'm not worried about fixing humanity.

That's the viewpoint.

I wouldn't expect to hear much differently. Commits and 2019 recruits have already bought the bill of goods and don't want to believe anything negative outside their echo chamber and have to go through the process of recruiting again.

I am more interested how it affects OSU moving forward with undecided recruits in 2020 and beyond. Especially ones outside of Ohio. I still think long term it is going to have an effect especially if he does not win big this year. It may be small, but a small drop-off in talent may have a cascade of effects.

I agree that it's a marathon, not a sprint.  There is a crescendo building, and it doesn't look good.  Long term, I don't think this dies down too quickly, and I think the recruits and parents will begin to realize that this is a huge shit show and he's not long to coach there.

Let it play out a little more, see what else comes out.  It's a trainwreck and people can't stop watching.

Not sure what you want them to say. I'm sure there will be some that decommit and then maybe we could talk to them. But as of right now, their kids are going to OSU and the parents trashing Urban Meyer are not going to help their kids at all.

Jeff09

August 23rd, 2018 at 4:11 PM ^

At this point, there's a ton of time left in the recruiting cycle, and OSU's class is so highly rated that the vast, vast majority of these kids have multiple commitable offers from similarly-placed schools. There's nothing holding most of them back from de-committing and going elsewhere at this point.

M-Dog

But in all honesty, why would they?

The only reason that they would shy away is if it looked like there would be some coaching instability.  Recruits hate that the most.

But Urban looks stronger than ever.  It's clear he runs that joint.

And if he runs that joint, then you as an athlete will run that joint.

What's not to like?

Try to remove yourself from your Michigan fandom in answering. If your kid had offers from Alabama, Ohio State, USC, Georgia, Michigan, Clemson, Texas, etc. etc. - all of them, essentially - would you really want them to go to OSU knowing what you know about the culture there? While I'm sure there are problems at the other schools I just mentioned, they're nowhere near as naked and obvious as at OSU right now, so what's the point? Why not pick one of the other perfectly good schools where you can at least hope that your kid isn't being coached by a complete psychopath?

Birds of a feather.  Hernandez, Elliot, the double bird guy.  It seems like the kids Meyer goes after have a certain douchiness about them.

Considering most of those guys had Michigan offers and more than a couple were heavy michigan osu battles (ruckert, weber, fuller off the top of my head for guys michigan-osu were top 2) either michigan also goes after douchiness too or people just don't care about other people and are looking out for themselves and justifying it however they can.

I know this is a popular tact for those of you attempt to rationalize your position. However, what it clearly demonstrates is that the culture of a football program does indeed matter-in the larger picture. Why does the history of Urban Meyer and Mark Dantonio include a long list of personal "tragedy" among their players??? And, just as clearly, it is not who recruits them but where they choose to go. This is not about bad kids choosing OSU and MSU and good kids choosing Michigan. Every one of us are capable of both great good and great evil-here, this is about how these young, immature kids move in one direction or the other. OSU and MSU also recruited many/most of the players who are at Michigan...you have no point...go listen to the Jon Jansen podcast interview of Grant Newsome...and learn something. This is who Jim Harbaugh recruits and this is the culture he nurtures. Winning at life.

Getting at nature vs. nurture. Are there some that would have ended up the same? Possibly. But the environment may make a difference in how an individual develops. And how you handle discipline and team rules matter. The stuff Urban turned a blind eye to at Florida has not been tolerated at Michigan. To Urban's credit, his players at OSU have been much different than Florida.

What will affect OSU's recruiting is beating them on the field.

For better and for worse, that's what will make the difference. Win a couple of those games and the shine starts coming off.

If this doesn't faze recruits and their parents, then the whole taking a knee is an absolute joke.  The real person to blame for 99% of problems in life is the person in the mirror.

With 70% born out of wedlock, 50% in single-parent/fatherless home, etc looking for an entitlement paycheck overlooks any since of right and wrong.

If any recruit, regardless of color, was being recruited by a coach like this, and the parent(s)and recruits look the other way, it does not say much for them as parents are recruits.

The reference to conditions in the African-American community is a reference to the justice for the African American community that is being demanded by the taking of a knee by the NFL players.  A gesture that totally overlooks the self-imposed, freely chosen, 99% of irresponsible behaviors and choices that are made in the African American community that have nothing to do with white people.  Obviously, the parents and these recruits who still will go to OSU are totally ignoring the justice this coache's wife is not getting from OSU.

Maybe you should go lay down, reflect for a little bit, and ask yourself this question, “do I sound like a racist asshole, right now?

*spoiler alert, you do, you definitely sound like a racist asshole.

So maybe keep your racist asshole thoughts to yourself going forward.

You know the old saying “‘‘tis better to be thought a racist asshole, then to open your mouth and remove all doubt”

Birds of a feather...

Urban could literally kill someone a la Maryland and a fair sized portion of the fanbase would blame the player...and there wouldn't be any decommits
