Only one ACC team advanced to the Sweet 16

Submitted by Chitown Kev on

Duke, Notre Dame, Louisville, Virginia, Florida State, Miami, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest...all gone...

Only UNC is left

3 teams from each of the Big 10, Pac 12, Big 12 and SEC.

And even 2 teams from the Big East!?

I guess the Atlantic Coast Conference isn't all that this year...for a change.

the game on Sunday sounded like a home game for Michigan in the second half.  I have no idea how many Michigan fans were there, but I heard them loud and clear on TV. It was great.

to read into the conference relative rankings based on two rounds of the tournament when it makes us look good and them bad, but don't forget that the tournament is incredibly random. A lot of games are coinflips and the ones that aren't are still 2:1 type odds. It isn't that unlikely to have a few teams play poorly and lose just like it's not that unlikely for Wisconsin and Michigan to knock off Villanova and Louisville.

That said, I'm happy that Duke is gone, and to hell with the ACC.

Exactly this. There's a lot of noise in something like the NCAA tournament; indeed, it's exactly this noise, the randomness, the unpredictability, that makes it so damn fun! But it doesn't overturn a season's worth of data. Even now, on Kenpom, the ACC has six teams rated in the top 30, tied with the Big 12 for the most. Just because a bunch of upsets happened, it doesn't mean those teams were undeserving.

What was silly about the B1G seeding was the seeding of B1G teams relative to each other, not other conferences. The conference got a 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 8, and a 9, which is about right. The conference didn't have any consistent teams threatening the top seed lines all year, but had a lot of good teams. The problem is that the teams with the 4, 5, and 6 included Minnesota and Maryland, which made *no* sense. Michigan and Wisconsin should have been 5 and 6 seeds; Minnesota and Maryland should have been the 7 and 8. State, for all the bitching around here, actually ended up seeded relatively correctly at 9 (at least according to Kenpom).

Anyway, to hell with State, Duke, Notre Dame (just because), and the ACC. The ACC bowing out like this was a true upset, but an upset I think we can all get behind.

Aren't you going to miss the media reminding us 50 times per day that 10 ACC teams made it to the tournament?

The comparison to the SEC in football is a good one.  Even when they don't live up to the hype, the media keeps having orgasms over them simply for existing.

You know, it does feel weird to not see the ACC heavily represented in the Sweet Sixteen, and by weird, I mean excellent. Ended my evening by watching Duke go down to many tears from their fans in the crowd - sweet, delicious Duke tears.

It's weird how much I enjoy Duke fans getting all misty after a loss.  It's that look of entitlement unfulfilled that gets me every time.

The best disappointed fan tears, of course, are Brazilian women fans when Brazil gets knocked off in world cup.  That's more of an attractiveness thing, though.  Duke fan tears are funny, fulfilling, but unattractive - which, in Duke's case, makes them even funnier.

NCAA UPDATE — MM's bracket went up in flames last night. But for those who enjoy some Dukenfreude it was a strong night as the Blue Devils fell to South Carolina 88-81

A bit like the Big Ten in postseason for football this year. Penn State, Wisconsin, UM, and OSU all in the top 10. Only Wisconsin wins, and it was against a scrappy MAC team. Everyone else either couldn't close the deal, or just shit the bed entirely (looking at you, OSU).

Everyone thought the ACC's shit didn't stink this year. Now they've got one team left. UNC could still realistically win it all, but I won't be surprised if they don't. They barely got by Arkansas.

Clemson, a 2-seed, lost at home to 7-seed Oakland in the opening round; Syracuse (the first team out of the NCAA field and the top overall seed in the NIT) lost at home to 5-seed Mississippi in the second round. Only Georgia Tech remains in the NIT from the ACC, and they were a 6-seed that beat 3-seed Indiana at home in the opening round (and that led to the firing of Harbaugh brother-in-law Tom Crean) and then beat 7-seed Belmont at home to advance to the NIT quarterfinals against Ole Miss.

by any conference.........Never understood all the ACC is the best conference talk this year when it's been the Big 12 that's been blowing everyone away.

Only 2004 ACC has a higher ratinf since beginning of the Kenpom era (2002). Big 12 has a shot to be best ever and at worst looks to be firmly locked into at least the 2nd best of all-time.

On a side note- Michigan already has obviously beaten Oklahoma State, can knock off Kansas to win the region than beat either Baylor or WVU in the finals. Combine that with their earlier win this season over Texas would make a clean 4-0 sweep over Big 12.
