Once again, We control our own destiny

Submitted by Generic MGoBlogger on

Let's not screw it up this time. Ohio came through for us at a really key time tonight. Beating IU won't be a cake walk on Sunday as Ohio pretty much outplayed them on the glass and in the paint and also played some very impressive defense.  We definitely need to show strength and aggression on the interior early against them Sunday and also need to establish ourselves early defensively.  Let's not forget Purdue, though, tomorrow... I think we all remember the last time we overlooked a Big Ten opponent. Either way, March is a new month... Let's keep it rolling. WE ON and GO BLUE!!!

I think Sparty.

Everyone would be even against each other at the top (everyone would be 1-1) and once again Wisconsin would be the next tie-breaker.  Sparty would be 2-0 agains them.  I then think we'd become the 4 seed.  Actually maybe not.  They lost to Wiscy also which would mean the next tie-breaker team, Minnesota, which we beat twice.   Indiana a 4-seed?!

I could be terribly wrong on all of this I'm doing if off the top of my head right now.

Edit: Wrong.  Indiana is #1 as they beat Sparty twice.

...but it was mentioned that Michigan's seed won't be good due to the Wisconsin loss.

Apperantly we lose a lot of the tie-breakers.

Now MSU and Wisky still play each other so one of them will fall to 6 losses. We just need to win 2 games, screw the seeds.

I do want to face Wisky in the B1G Tournament again though...and PSU. Those losses just pissed me off. I hope we get the Nittany Lions and then the Bagers right after. Get those losses out of the way in then move on to play one of the Big Boys (no offense to Wisconsin).

Illinois DESTROYED Ohio the first time around, and they're somewhat fighting for the Tournament resume right now.

Ohio could have a little post-IU hangover and Illinois could go in there and get a win. This would obviously help Michigan move up in terms of seeding.

IU would get the 1 seed. They'd have a 4-2 record against the tied teams. MSU would be 4th @ 2-4. We'd tie OSU at 3-3 but they'd win the tie-breaker for the 2 seed because they'd have a better record against the #5 team (Wisconsin.)

If Wisconsin wins out and we beat IU, they're the 1 seed.

We get screwed by the tiebreakers. There's no way we can get the 1 seed, and we can only get a 2 if OSU, Wisconsin, and MSU all lose another game. Here's the seeding for the two 4-way tie scenarios:

  1. Wisconsin
  2. Ohio State
  3. Indiana
  4. Michigan

OR

  1. Indiana
  2. Ohio State
  3. Michigan
  4. Michigan State

First was their win at home vs. MSU

Let's take advantage of it!

Sidenote, Beilein said at the beginning of the year that he felt the winner of this conference would have "4 or 5" losses and I remember the announcers laughing at him and saying it was overkill.

God willing, Championship game on Sunday. I couldn't care less about b10 tournament seeding...Back to back championships in the best league in the country...That would be one heck of a legacy for Trey Burke to leave at the University of Michigan. Come on blue, you've got this.

The prevailing lines that I can find would have Michigan as a 6-7 point favorite, and indeed, Massey and TeamRankings are going with about a 75% chance for a Michigan win. By the numbers, this really is all about the wins now. By many estimates, our chances of winning out are not insignifcant either - by Massey's numbers, it would be a bit less than 40% to win out. Not impressive odds, but not so small as to not garner a mention.

As for Purdue, by the stats, we're much better on offense and about the same on defense, so hopefully, we win tomorrow and the regular season's final game becomes a truly classic, full-of-consquences game.

This is gonna be a grind. Woud you rather Michigan lose on friday or saturday next week if it meant they had a longer rest? I think the lack of rest really screwed them last year.

Man, Michigan is half court shot and a bad Penn State loss away from having a one game lead in the Big Ten and a chance on Sunday to win the conference out right!

Agreed, but we could've just as easily lost to OSU and MSU at home (beat them by a combined 3 points).  We're probably right around where we should be (I would argue between Wisconsin/Penn State/3-Point Loss to OSU we should've grabbed one of them, but, it didn't work out like that).

We've been given a second chance, but none of that matters if we don't take care of business at Purdue tomorrow. Purdue may not have a lot to play for, but I'm sure they'd love nothing more than to ruin our hopes for a championship. Step on the gas tomorrow night and don't let up for 40 minutes.

Then we'll worry about Indiana.

I'm in a happy mood for obvious reason. With the win now, this cuts the number of possible permutations from eight to four assuming OSU beats Illinois, Michigan beats Purdue, MSU beats NW,  and Wisconsin beats PSU. Obviously if Indiana wins, they claim the title outright. Below listed are the scenarios for seeding going into the Big Ten Tournament.

Indians beats Michigan, Michigan State beats Wisconsin

1. Indiana 14-4

2. OSU 13-5

3. MSU 13-5

4. Wisconsin 12-6

5. Michigan 12-6

Michigan beats Indiana, Michigan State beats Wisconsin

1.Indiana 13-5

2. Ohio State 13-5

3. Michigan 13-5

4. Michigan State 13-5

5. Wisconsin 12-6

Indiana beat Michigan, Wisconsin beats Michigan State

1. Indiana 14-4

2. Wisconsin 13-5

3. Ohio State 13-5

4. Michigan State 12-6

5. Michigan 12-6

Michigan beats Indiana, Wisconsin beats Michigan State

1. Wisconsin 13-5

2. Ohio State 13-5

3. Michigan 13-5

4. Indiana 13-5

5. Michigan State 12-6

As for this week; its weird having to root for your rival to help each other so I guess this means I have to root for Michigan. Go Bl.... I can't do it, just win the damn game; thanks! After this week is over please resume to your normal hate of Ohio State, I wouldn't want it any other way. A few jabs and Ohio jokes on Mgoblog will help to reestablish the hate.

Not your fault. That article mistakenly has IU splitting with MSU instead of sweeping them (interestingly, it also has UM incorrectly splitting with Minnesota). But because IU was 2-0 against MSU, they hold the tie-breaker edge.

Per my friend, who is a Michigan manager. Coach Beilein said "OK, so no bullshit from you bitches tomorrow," on the bus at the team once IU/OSU went final. I'd like to emphasize, I don't care what you do with Purdue, just beat IU, please? Thanks. Good lookin' out.
