Ok to continue Little Brother chatter?

Submitted by marc_from_novi on
It has been suggested in earlier posts that we should stop referring to Sparty as Little Brother. I say it is too late; that it has been woven into the rivalry fabric forever. I have tried to recall similar insults involving us or any of our rivals that have faded over the years but nothing comes to mind.

I say as long as it bothers them so much, let's go with it. And it does bother them. MSU beats Michigan 1 year out of 8 and all hell breaks loose. I'm so tired of hearing that Dicktonio is whipping our butt in recruiting, and Michigan is on the way down. Let's make sure Sparty knows where they stand in the whole scheme of things... as our little bro. Always has been, always will be.

UM was founded in 1817; MSU in 1855. This to me argues strongly against shared parentage. If Sparty prefers, I'd be fine with relabeling them "Little Adoptive Grand Niece" or "Parvenu Daughter-in-law."

If we're going to be realistic, the actual university was founded in 1837 and the seal reflected this until the 20's. The change to 1817 was made when it was discovered that a previous institution, the University of Michigania founded by Augustus Woodward in Detroit, had been granted the seal in 1817. So it was changed to reflect the date the seal went into effect. In truth, the original University of Michigan ceased to exist as all but a legal entity from 1827-1837.

Yeah, but this kind of thing is true for just about every university. They all choose the oldest possible date for their seals. Michigan Agricultural College was chartered in 1855, for instance, but would not hold its first classes until about a decade later (and it would not be called Michigan State University until 1955).

Tis true. But I like e-facts... and this is never really addressed in the commonly held narrative of University history which goes "Founded in Detroit, moved to Ann Arbor", when the fact is the people who founded the university in Ann Arbor had no idea a university had even existed in Detroit.

My understanding (from what I can remember from my History of U-M class I took several years ago) is that the institution founded in Detroit wasn't even a university at all, just a public school. Apparently, "university" could refer to almost any kind of school back then. The 1837 institution was the first actual university (in the modern sense of the word) in Michigan. (For current students: History of U-M is a really interesting course. I definitely recommend it.)

I've said this once before, and I'll say it again. I don't consider them family, and am disappointed we refer to them as little brother. Strange kid on the block maybe.

retort to the Walmart Wolverine comment. Then again, considering the bar is very low to get into Michigans Secondbest University, maybe some of these guys did go there. I have a question for you all. I'm new to this board. What the hell gets you negative points and who decides that?????

Once, or if ever you make it to 20 points, you get to +/- comments. My guess is your comments came off like spam, which is why in another thread I said state your cause in the diaries so everyone will look at them there. You should have that ability even without 20 points. Normally spam would be banhammered, but your cause was good, so we just let it go hoping you'd see my note to post it in a diary. Hopefully you see my note this time.

First time I've ever seen an online diary. Will give it a spin. Not sure what the difference between sticking it in my sig will do but I'll try that too. May I add that (a) You KNOW the cause is righteous. EVERY one of you knows this! (b) A little spam every now and then doesn't hurt your diet as long as its cooked right. You start getting fat with a lot of it. (Yet another one I couldn't resist. Hey, I've been dead for nearly 100 years, the heck do you want!!!)

Those with 20+ points have the ability to vote a post up or down. I believe the reason for your negative votes has been suggested to you in other posts. In particular, your cause may be righteous (I don't think anyone disputes that), but your currently implementation is pretty much spam. To reiterate other suggestions for you, put a link in your signature, and maybe make a diary about your cause. More than likely, it will be better received that way. Here's a point to get you on your way. [Edit: Or just read what formerly wrote.]

personally I like little brother. I think its funny and a relitvely clever nickname seeing how it is unique to our rivalry with Michigan State. I have never heard of this nickname associated with another instate rivalry of similar dynamic. Plus, MSU fans seem to be bothered by this notion which makes it even more interesting.

Stupid concept. There is no relation between the 2 universities or programs. also...labelling sucks. Let them have their fun with their little immature "scUM" and "Wallmartwolverine" etc. Its all Bullshit and the proof will be on the field.

Without the "Little Brother" moniker, how are we going tell them to get the heck back in their room and shut the f#$% up after we slap them around the basement this October???? The context just isn't the same.

shouldn't the expected outcome be to "slap them around the basement this October"? I successfully tie my shoes each and every morning, but somehow refrain from slapping the image of myself in the mirror a high-five. I'm all for good natured ribbing, but to feel the need to resort to this after the worst UM season in my lifetime, is exhibiting the characteristics we have saddled MSU fans with for years.

...regarding other reasons to use Little Brother. Your point is made but yet countered by the foolishness of those who win one game in their rivalry matchup in eight years but then feel the need to post billboards all over I-96. Very little brother-esque. Much like when my real little brother beat me at Atari for the first time in four years and then went to school and told all his friends. They've earned the moniker.
