This will be the thread for hot takes which defy neat categorization but are still Ohio State related.

You're a fucking moron if you don't care about the refs. Turnovers happen especially when you can't run the ball consistently. If the game was called fairly it does go to OT. It's morons letting the refs off the hook which is why the officiating in this conference is so bad

while this was gut wrenching in every way imaginable - fucking refs, meyer channelling his inner cheerleader, etc. - it's only year 2 of Harbaugh. he has 1 year of his recruits on campus and a helluva class coming in for 2017. this program is farther ahead than i thought it would be by now. keep in mind how long we were a program in search of an identity after Carr. we will be fine. GO BLUE!!!

We're missing a big time RB for this offense to really start taking off. I think the rest of the team is coming together but I feel we're still a little behind with the QB and RB positions.

Penn State shitting the bed right now. Michigan is cursed and Meyer has made a deal with the devil that far surpasses Dantonio's.

two interceptions plus the fumble cost 21 points.  We were not able to overcome his poor play.  Overall, the defense was fine.  It looks like at least two more years of losing to OSU before we have a real chance to beat them.  We lose most of our starters and have a weak QB and OL to deal with.  This sucks

and they were bad, but we had our shots.  We had many many chances to stop them on their regulation TD drives  We had uncharacteristic drops by our best players.    On the play before the 4th down mis-spot we had that fucker for a 5 yard loss.  We over pursued and he got 8 instead of losing 8.  Too many screwups on our end to blame the officials for this loss.

and better pay-calling.  Only one time did a peppers play work on offense.  That needs to go away.  And Speight just wasn't very good.  The oline didn't give the RBs any where to run.

Granted we were in it to the end, but just not good enough at crunch time.  It's not much of a rivalry losing 12 of 13.

I am proud of the way our guys battled, and disagree with many complaints.

IMO we were the better team today - not dominant, but better. Speight showed guts and composure throughout the game. He made some wonderful plays; he also made some critical mistakes. It's very, very difficult to overcome 3 turnovers.

Speaking of "crunch time" - his TD pass on 4th down in OT was the most clutch play of the entire game.

A tense, rivalry road game against #2 was decided in 2 OT by a bad call.

Jim Harbaugh and Don Brown are great coaches. It was an all-timer that sadly went the wrong way.

Speight threw a TD pass on a 4th down play in OT. Then next OT his 3rd down target was interfered with (No call!)

I don't get why some are so down on Speight. His 2nd INT was bad. The pick 6 I lay more blame on bad pass protection and a questionable playcall. The fumble exchange is one of those freak things (openly wondering if that had to do with his shoulder at all). Aside from those 3 plays, he was basically our only chance at moving the ball today. Just sucks that the biggest reason we lost was also the biggest reason we almost won.

He had a bad game at the wrong time during regulation ...

2 INTs that led to points and fumbled on the goal line = Bad News and you can't do that in this type of game.  He had a bad game and guess what .. it's ok.  Life goes on .... We hung in there and it was a close game and not a blowout like last year.

Looking forward to Peters vs Speight ... My money is on Peters ... it's that simple. We need a far more mobile QB with a good arm plain and simple.  A good to great QB in MANY of our games would of made BIG difference.  It doesn't mean I don't appreciate Speight ... I do ... tough kid to get back in there and play today ... It's just we need better play overall at that position.

There's a million things I could say about this game, but really what keeps coming to mind is that I would appreciate some fucking luck once in awhile.

Auburn had their kick six. MSU had their flukey win against us last year and benefitted from the weather in Columbus. Ole Miss somehow has Alabama turn the ball over 5 times last year. PSU blocks OSU's kick this year. Obviously there are a ton of other examples.

But lately our program is always on the wrong side of chaos. Another instant classic where we are the losers...

Harbaugh is a great coach, but if he's going to get as emotional as he does over every bad call, he will need to do a better job of putting teams away.  The refs are reacting to Harbaugh's antics.  That's not right, but it's the way it is, and it matters in close games.

I, for one, am growing tired of "the script." The script being that Michigan finds a way to lose; there is always an excuse. We sulk after the game is over and endure Ace's quick postgame post. Some of us move on after a couple of hours but atleast I was giddy for the first time in years when Michigan went up by 10 in the 3rd quarter.

  • The team cannot turn the ball over three times and expect to win this game.
  • Urban played to win; Harbaugh played to extend the game on the road. Advantage: Urban. Wilton Speight was right on the call following the overtime touchdown and that was to go for two. They kicked the extra point and then settled for a field goal. Look at Urban's face when he has to settle for a field goal; the man is going to go for touchdowns any time he plays us so Michigan must not quickly settle for field goals.
  • The offensive line on the right side particularly Kalis made too many mistakes.
  • Darboh had drops in last years game that didn't matter but his drops this year were key.
  • The defense played lights out! LIGHTS OUT! The only thing that stopped them was being ask to do a tad too much. They were on the field way too long in the second half and the fatigue showed in overtime.
  • Kenny Allen had an amazing game!
  • Someone pointed out the salary of our coaches and called he/she a douche but it must be emphasized that our coaches get payed the money; they do to lead Michigan to victory.
  • The officials were indeed horrible but when you play close and it comes down to a critical call then you can't be shocked if it goes against you even if it is a bad call.

This one hurt because Michigan lead up until the last second. I am tired and sad; I don't want to "wait till next year."

had chances did not make the plays.  Butt dropped pass on first possesion for first down.  Qb throws two int s. Fumble on 1 yard line.  Stupid penalties on Hill and Cole.  Hill was tapping his chest saying my bad, he knew that was bad.  Cole's face mask was just plain stupid, multiple shots to the facemask in the open field.  The PI calls are total 50 50 shots.  The spot, all Barret had to do was have the ball touch the 15 yardline, too close to call without a camera staring straight down the 15 yard line.  Damn it, it was there a nd wasnt taken.

Besides the bad calls, the thing about the officiating that bothered me all day was tOSU was either getting extra timeouts or longer ones because of how the refs were stopping play.  Several times I mentioned to my son it was BS how they seemed to be getting a timeout called without calling one.

Michigan threw the ball 36 times and ran 43.  That's pretty balanced.

His quarterback courageously played while almost certainly not 100%, and threw two bad picks. It's entirely reasonable to play conservatively with the lead.

I don't understand the claim that Meyer outcoached Harbaugh - double overtime, stats almost dead even (except for TO's and penalties), decided by a controversial call.

Meyer, on the other hand, made the one absolutely dumb call in the game.  He also allowed his qb to get sacked 8 times.

OSU's offense is tough to stop, and Barrett and Samuel are dangerous.  Between them they had one big gainer the entire day.  Meyer's "wizardry" was getting a bunch of calls in his favor and a great spot.

Putting the ball in the hands of your most dynamic player, or trying a play that worked all season (train) but failed in this game - that's simply calling a few plays that didn't work. Sure, you could say they were poor calls. None cost us the game.

OTOH, attempting a fake punt from deep in your own territory with long yardage to go - that's monumentally stupid - and could have cost them the game.

Huge, huge difference.

Want another example?  On the 3rd to last play, Meyer called basically his version of Pepcat - give the ball to his most dynamic player and hope he will find a way.

Samuel got the ball and everyone in the stadium knew it was going to happen (just like Pepcat). Unfortunately for us, he somehow escaped, despite the fact the entire defense was keyed to stop him. Sometimes a guy simply cannot be tackled.

Peppers is the same kind of athlete. Didn't work for us; worked for them. Was that a dumb call by Meyer?  No, because it worked, even though we had the play completely sniffed out.

As for big games...

What games has Harbaugh coached for us that you would consider "big"?  I'll go with 2xMSU, 2xOSU, Wisconsin, and the bowl game vs. Florida. So far, he's 3-3, with 2 absolutely heart-wrenching losses.  Could very easily be 5-1.

Harbaugh is our best coach since Schembechler.

My general observations are that this was an excellent defense paired with a B- offense that just couldn't make big plays enough. Offense always felt like it was building a house of cards. While OSU offense looked awful, you always feared that one play by Barrett or samuels would change the game. Too many plays needed on scoring drives for UM. OSU always feels one play away. Once um gets more advanced weaponry in place on offense, the defense will have less pressure, and opposing defenses won't be able to bring as much pressure without paying the price. Speight exceeded most expectations, and having a returning QB starter for a change will be good. They need to rebuild a bit now, but next year should be the floor I hope

Because all I heard this week from Peppers was how UM was going to bring it all. All I saw was the same stuff, no surprises. The O line really cost UM in the two losses. Jus can't get it done in crunch time. Plenty of chances to win regardless of the bad calls. Would have been cool if J. Lewis ran the kickoff back with the 1second remaining in regulation.

The pick 6 thrown by our QB. The other interception that gave OSU a very short field. The penalty on Harbaugh gave OSU great field position. The Grant Perry penalty on the punter. That one was a killer because not only did it prevent Michigan from having excellent field position (the punt was deep in OSU territory), but it allowed their punter to subsequently boom a kick that pinned Michigan at their own 5 yard line. That sequence of events concluded with the interception for a TD. A complete flip of the field due to an unnecessary and infuriating penalty.

M has been talent deficient for some time and that doesn't just include making plays with your legs, it also includes making days with your head, which is where they lost yet again. Recruiting stars don't just include physical attributes, they also include smarts...the Patriots. The big brain on Brad will put W's in the left column. M had that game won by being the better TEAM but Gabe chunks of it away on multiple occasions.
