Officiating

Submitted by J.Swift on

That was the first basketball game I've seen where one team played tackle and the other played touch--and the refs called all the fouls on the team playing touch.  What a farce.

The announcers stopped mentioning Michigan after the break.  So I guess the mayhem on the court was beneath their notice.

Did I miss something?  Every time Michigan made contact=foul.  Bucknuts=block and tackle in the paint, at the arc, and don't worry about fouling.  All contact fouls go against Blue.

We still made it close. And did the announcers give us credit?  No, the Bucknut coach gets credit for leaving his starters in to withstand our run.

stop bitching about stuff you cannot control.  Yes there were questionable calls, but on both teams.  This is a part of the game every game there are calls that should not be called and calls that should not have been called.  The game is over OSU outplayed us for the most part.  Just look forward to the tourney.

Wouldn't necessarily say it was against us. Let's not forget Craft and Lighty went out early in the 1st and we had a bonus when they didn't.

It's more that it was just bad officiating in general. Which is unfortunately the norm in this conference.

i didn't think the officiating was that bad at all..

What i saw was whenever morris was out of the game we went on big runs..

We went on a nice run when he sat with about 5 left.. then we went on another big run at the end without him.

I saw a young player drive and take a lot of poor shots and force a lot of crap that never needed to be.  When he was out and had hardaway running it we looked great

and I don't think it was as one sided as people think, but how Hightower and Valentine continue to be employed is just beyond me.

but...their 16-0 run was sparked from an obvious out of bounds call and Bullinger crashing his elbow through a stationary Hardaway's face. Sure, we fell apart for that run. But going from a 2 point deficit to 7 on those calls initiated it. Just sayin'.

I think it is just basketball in general that sucks.  I love March Madness, but at times like this it is so frustrating to see how weak the calls are.  Everytime Sullinger goes up it is a foul by default.  Also don't like that penalties can be taken as a strategy to help a team.

I agree that there were some extremely poor officiating periods (save for the end of the game when all the calls went our way). This officiating looked even worse because three bad calls in a row (the missed out of bounds of sullinger, the missed sulligner charge and then one more, i think) cam right when we had gotten close and spurred a run for them.

Poor officiating coupled with incredibly poor timing makes for a pretty one-sided job by the refs.

those easy to call but blown badly were the difference.  i understand ref'ing isn't easyy,b ut that run of bad calls took the wind out of the sails for a few minutes and thus became the difference in the game.

the only call that pissed me off was the OOB on sully that they called off on mich in the 2nd half.  STU's arm knocks the ball clearly going in one direction, the ball ends up traveling in the other direction oob.  how does this happen?  ah yes the ball must've deflected off sullinger's arm which was traveling in the direction the ball went OOB.

grrr just grrr.  after this, the 18-3 for OSU happened.

Obviously it wasn't fully on officiating, but to say that officiating didn't play a role in it would just be ignorant.  Michigan was making a run and 2 or 3 obviously horrible calls went against Michigan, allowing OSU to break Michigan's run and get 7 points or whatever it was.  That obviously played a huge role in the game, and when anyone says otherwise, I can only conclude that they are clueless about college basketball :)

I actually don't think this game, overall, was as bad as the one in Columbus, in which we committed seven team fouls in the second half before they committed their first.  But in both games a bunch of calls suddenly went OSU's way right after we'd made a run, which was really frustrating.  Now granted, it did not help that we went stone cold from the field at the same time as the stretch of shaky calls.  We lost our composure for a few minutes, which you can't do.

But I don't think it cost us the game.  Not having any super athletic and experienced big men did that. That'll come in time, hopefully. There's a reason OSU is #1 in the nation.  If you want to get all the calls, you have to be highly ranked, and have players they assume can brush guys off with a shoulder move, or if they don't make it, MUST have been fouled. It's been a great run, and thankfully, it's not over yet. Let's not sully it with a lot of borderline whining. This team has done more than anyone thought it would (I mean, if you put Beilein under a lie detector, I'm sure he's even a bit pleasantly surprised). Let's see if we can steal one in the Tournament and really make some noise. There was no shame in losing today. They played their hearts out to the end, and there was no quit in them in a  loss anymore than in their victories.

How about if we're being greedy, we steal 6?

Though I don't blame the refs for us losing, I am completely at a loss to why Sullinger gets SO MANY CALLS his direction. We were dumbfounded watching the game.

Doesn't have his feet set? Eh, he probably meant to set them... CHARGE ON MICHIGAN. He hits the ball out of bounds? Eh, probably didn't mean to... OUT ON MICHIGAN. He "bulls" his way to the basket with elbows flying and as though he's playing football on the goal line? Eh, he probably didn't do anything wrong... NO CALL NECESSARY

2 bad calls back to back when we were on our run to cut it to 2 but then that out of bounds call on sullinger and then the bs charge call on the same official....he acted like he didnt even know what to call at first....that killed our momentum bottom line...

I don't like blaming officiating.  As said above the key to this one was that the back to back poor calls(both by Valentine, not Hightower) turned the momentum.   But momentum will swing in games quickly.  UM lost their composure, and that falls on themselves.

Their success this past month has come from playing on the edge of control at times, and making the big plays.  Today, they went over that peak and fell on the side of out of control.

It was bad, but then again, it always is.

What I mean is, basketball is just frustrating because refs have a huge influence on the game.  Always have, always will.  It sucks.

Let's win in the tourny.

what game people were watching, if they don't think the refs catered to Sullinger. It was fairly blatant. That is the only part the officiating that truely pissed me off. The refs treated the guy like he was God out there.

That sequence of bad calls did have an impact on the mometum though. With that said, we also went  extremely cold at the same time, which didn't help matters.

see that outbounds call, cleraly off of sullnger...what are you gonna do. I love this team tho, we need a better supporting cast behind timmy and morris.

Morris gets frustrated easily and when he does, he has the tendency to dribble alot, drive the basket, jump before he has an opening and put up stupid shots. Hopefully in the offseason he learns not to do that, learns to finish with his left and gets a nice pull up jumper. Also, I really hope we pull a big man into this recruiting class. In our losses against elite competition, that has been the difference.

The out of bounds call on the rebound that clearly was knocked out by sullinger was an absolute killer cuz that was when we were down two and they scored to go up four.  Then right after that the block on Hardaway which was clearly a charge was devastating (especially because that was a much more obvious charge call than Morris' in the first half, which should have been a block on Sullinger).  Sullinger made the first and missed the second and they put it in to go up seven.

Two really bad calls to help them go from up two to up seven when we had a ton of momentum.  Highway robbery.

I thought the announcers were very good though.  Usually they fawn over the #1 team in a matchup like that but they gave us a lot of credit for our last two months, which have been outstanding.  I was pleased with that.

I heard when he said that. Gotta give him credit for being so unequivocal in his opinion. It's a side of Nance that I personally like but we rarely see. I remember how much he enjoyed that run back when he and Packer would do a lot of the Michigan tournament games.

I am thinking we won't hear that opinion tomorrow night on that documentary. I am hoping that some people take ownership of what happened or at least the documentary makes the point that some people should.  Not talking about Ed Martin either.
