Non-Freshman Redshirts

Submitted by Marley Nowell on

With Harbaugh's decision to keep Shane Morris off the field I wondered if we would see any other non-freshman redshirt in 2015. Correct me if I'm wrong but so far players we have not seen are:

Jr. QB Shane Morris

Hopefully Michigan won't need for him to take the field in 2015 to maintain an extra year of eligibility.

Jr. WR Da'Mario Jones

Not sure if he has played on Special Teams. Defintely someone who would benefit from a Redshirt to develop and learn the offense, or even move to another position group. If we don't see him on the field against UNLV its doubtful he takes the field this year.

So. NT Brian Mone

Even if he is healthy by the end of the year DL depth is good and Michigan would be better served to have him for a 5th year.

So. WR Freddy Canteen has seen the field.

Doubtful that he redshirts but if injury lingers and he's not really needed this year he may take the time to learn the offensive and/or defensive playbook(s)

I don't see why they wouldn't keep Mone out and pursue a medical redshirt designation. Even if he is healthy enough to play, he may not be healthy enough to play well. He's an awful big guy to rebound quickly from an ankle injury that will see a lot of weight placed on it.

Ahh... the redshirt argument.  My old friend.

A player can actually play and still get a medical redshirt.  I'm assuming that if the regular redshirt supercedes a medical, then Peppers was able to get a regular redshirt last year.  Didn't we have someone play 3 games a few years back and still redshirt?  Was it Gardner?

These are the qualifications for a medical redshirt. Not sure if these have been changed or updated.

  • The student-athlete must suffer the injury during one of their four seasons of college competition or during the senior year of high school.
  • The injury must be incapacitating. That means it must be a season-ending injury.
  • The injury must occur prior to the start of the second half of the season.
  • The student-athlete must not have competed in more than 30% of the season or three contests, whichever is greater.

doesn't work that way.  He gets five years of eligibility, you don't get to slap another redshirt on there for a 6th year.  You can petition for a 6th year and your chances are pretty good if you have lost two years to injury.  Just don't lose his medical records so you can prove that he redshirted due to injury in case it ever does come up.

Not really, you imply that if you call it a regular redshirt this year it has some bearing on getting a future medical redshirt in the future, which is not the case.  In fact if he hadn't gotten hurt and had a regular redshirt that would severly hurt his chances of getting a 6th year.  Which is likealy a moot poing anyways since 6th years almost never happen.

well for one none from Michigan in the past 20 years at least.

To maximize your chances of the 6th year you need to lose two years to injury, and have one of those years be the year you redshirt.  So of current players, for UM, Mone is probably the only canidate.  But he would have to lose another year to injury at some point, not be too good that he leaves early for the pros, be good enough that we want him back for a 6th year, and have him want to come back for that 6th year instead of getting on with his life.  What are the chances that all these thigns come together and he is here for a 6th year?  According to your google search 5 kids got 6th years, that's 5 out of probably ~2400 kids that were in that recruiting class.  That's pretty long odds.

Cool to see an Adrian Witty sighting, wonder if he would have panned out if he had made it past admissions here.

incorrect.  He did not RS last year for medical reasons.  Redshirts and medical redshirts are basically the same thing and you don't get both.  Medical is just when you have played a little and get an injury and they take you out for the rest of the season.  Carr used to do this all the time with what were probably pretty minor injuries.  He would let some true freshmen play a little their freshmen years, they realize they aren't going to contribute much, develop hangnail and get to redshirt the rest of the year keeping a year of eligibiilty.

* If a player doesn't play in a season, that is a "redshirt" season (assuming they haven't redshirted already in their career).  It doesn't matter whether they were injured or not, and no paperwork needs to be filed/approved by anybody.

* If a player does play, but is injured before the midway point of the season and without playing in 30% of the games, they can file paperwork for a "medical redshirt" for that season (assuming they haven't redshirted already in their career).  The paperwork, with evidence of an injury, must be approved by the conference, but adverse decisions can be appealed to the NCAA.

* In rare circumstances, a player has been granted a sixth season of eligibility, but it requires that both non-counting seasons be for medical reasons.

So what that means is that a player (like Shallman, perhaps) could get a sixth year if Michigan could go back and prove that he missed his Freshman year due to injury, not due to roster considerations.  That would, of course, almost certainly not be the case.  Really, that sixth year is given so rarely that it might as well not even be discussed.  I don't think any Michigan player in any sport has ever been given a sixth year.

There is no requirement that a "redshirt" be taken before a "medical redshirt" is taken, or vice versa.  They really don't have much to do with each other at all.  One is for a player who doesn't play, one is for a player who plays a little but then gets hurt.

but I kind if wish they would have kept open the possibility of redshirting Derrick Green. It looks like he is buried pretty far behind Smith and Isaac. We could use his extra year of eligibility two years from now.Amd I imagine he could benefit from an extra year of coaching under Wheatley.
