Nice article about Shawn Conway

Submitted by JD_UofM_90 on

I didn't realize the young man had gone through so much adversity in his life.  Good to see he has not let these hardships dampen his spirits.....

“It’s been a long journey, but everything happens for a reason and I believe in the end, I’m a better person for having gone through it as a result,”

I really like his positive / hardworking attitude.  Sounds like a great addition to our program.  GO BLUE!!!

Excellent story. It's amazing how much these kids go through. Conway seems to have a great attitude and understands how important it is to take advantage of second, third, and fourth chances. I'm rooting for Mr. Conway. Great addition to the Wolverine Family. I think his hardworking attitude, and ability to overcome obstacles, will translate to the field.

that most, if not all, of our recruits are kids (men?) of great character. In all the interviews I've heard, the recruits and commits are well-spoken and honest. To me, that is a very reassuring sign that Coach Rodriguez knows exactly the type of person that will thrive in this program.

I think that's been a very under-the-radar trait of the Rodriguez era so far. I was impressed with all the players interviewed during spring practice, including the early enrolees like Stephen Hopkins and Devin Gardner. It's hard to imagine the guys on this team forming a vigilante mob and it certainly makes me proud to root for them this season.

I agree. A lot obviously has been written about the practice issues, the supposed 'loss of family values' and the Dorsey situation. But what hasn't been made a big story is the caliber of people Rich Rod has largely been bringing in.

Looking at recruits scholarship lists, I'll admit I'd like to see Michigan beat out teams like OSU, Florida, Texas, Alabama et al. But it's hard to look negatively on recruits who may only be a 3 star instead of a 4 star, but have offers from the likes of Duke, Stanford, Vandy and so on.

From what I can tell and have read/heard over the last three years, Rich Rod recruits good people, good students and good football players.

After watching his performance at the Michigan camp (the scout video is on youtube) and his junior season highlight tape (found here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KL-jUCpnfVo&NR=1), I think he could turn out to be a solid outside receiver.  What he lacks in top end speed he makes up for in sure hands and an incredible ability to leap and catch the ball at its highest point.  The ability to judge a ball in the air and catch it at its highest point is one of the most underrated/underevaluated skills in players today and it looks like one that Mr. Conway has a knack for.

Watched the 7-on-7 Badger Sport event apparently from early April (I believe it is the MIchigan camp). I stopped the video at the 1:35 mark and don't need to watch much more. Conway has shown an uncanny ability to get high and take the ball from the highest point.

What I liked the most, though, was the use of his hands in beathing the CB and, most importantly, in knocking the CB's hands off his own arms, allowing him to get his hands up for the ball.

A good CB will try to get a hidden hold in on jump ball situations like these and a receiver will all too often leave their hands down too long or not use their hands enough to fight off this grab. As Conway eye's the ball in he is continuously knocking away the CB's hands and creates the space for an easy catch. Well done sir!

but does anyone know what those recent disciplinary issues are?

That aside, this sounds like a fairly incredible story given all the tumult in this kid's life bouncing from home-to-home and support system-to-support system. I'll be rooting for him.

Also sounds like we may see an uptick in his ratings this year given his limited exposure so far.

There was a story (actually, a pair of stories) that was published in the Birmingham Seaholm student newspaper.  For a high school newspaper, they were remarkably careful and well-done stories.  The subject of the stories were some minor theft issues.

Shawn Conway was not mentioned by name in those stories.  His name has never been formally linked with the matter.  But that is where the internet rumors stemmed from.  Part of what made the student reporting so good, was that they knew better than to name any names, based on the content and the context of what was known.  It was good judgment, not any supposed favoritsim toward any athlete, etc., that prevented any public naming.  And since Conway was never publicly named, he quite rightly never had to make any public defense.  And that is where the matter should end.

I am not saying Shawn was not involved.  And no one in any official capacity says that Shawn was involved.  That latter point should end all of this dicussion as to Shawn.  What I will say is that the whole matter involved some minor property theft issues from a locker room at Seaholm.  And there was included a matter of some recording of a theft incident.

The whole thing has little bearing on the remarkable life story of Shawn Conway, in any event.  And also in any event, no matter who was involved, the matter does not invove any matter of academic or athletic eligibility, or any matter of athletic or academic performance.  No drugs, no physical violence, no court proceedings, no police investigation, no prosecution, etc., etc., etc.  Nothing even close to any of that.  Minor history.

Nothing that I have said here goes beyond what is widely known at Seaholm; I'm not a Seaholm student or parent or teacher or administrator.  (I went to Seaholm's hated crosstown rival, Birmingham Groves.)  The real bottom line is that there just isn't any more to be said about Conway and any discipline, unless people just want to speculate and guess and presume.  Which is generally a bad idea and I advise against it.

Personally, I am All In for Shawn Conway.  I'm looking forward to a great Senior year from an extraordinary young man on his way to becoming an M Man.  I'm confident that he'll demonstrate to the world what an M Man is supposed to be.  Go Blue, Shawn.

for taking in Shawn Conway in his home with his family. This is service work at its best when someone reaches out to another human being to the extent that Chris Fahr did. I'm aware of the Seaholm situation and know what happened as I have connections to the school. I really don't want to get into it other than it's really not anyone's business because it's a minor issue. The coaching staff and school have already nipped it in the butt.

Shawn Conway is a good kid with a ton of talent who just needs to be with the right people right now. Most of us are just excited to actually have someone from Detroit and Cass Tech with as much talent as Shawn on the team. It's like a cultural experience to an upscale suburban school like Seaholm. I'm confident Conway will be a good player for Michigan and won't disappoint.
