NFL - recent cuts for UM players
I am probably missing a couple so please add. Here is what I saw looking through each teams' cuts from Tuesday (all needed to cut from 92 to 75):
Jay Feely (Arizona)
Alan Branch (Buffalo)
Craig Roh (Carolina)
Martell Webb (Cleveland)
Jibreel Black (T.B.)
Feely will land somewhere as he is a kicker and is "only" in his late-30s. Branch was a victim of his own stupid decision to drive drunk otherwise he was assured a spot in the DL rotation in Buffalo.
All others will have to see if they are picked up by another team , and if not, then hope to sign with a practice squad. NFL increased practice sqauds from 7 to 10 so there is extra room on rosters in 2014.

Alan Branch. Moral of the story is don't drink and drive ever.

It amazes me how these guys either cannot find or do not allow other people to drive them when they drink. I mean, how hard could it be for Alan freaking Branch to find someone to driver him around all year?
It really is sad to see people's careers fall apart because of this. Of course, it's much sadder to see what happens to the people that are inevitably victims when these guys get behind the wheel

People say this all the time, but it's not that simple. Could Alan Branch call a cab or a limo? Of course. But the problem with that is so can you and I. NFL players (and other hot-shot types) pay big money for their cars, and the biggest reason to do that is to show it off to your friends and the ladies.
You (I assume) or I can't take the girl I just picked up at the bar out to our Rolls or Porsche and take her home, or roll up to the club with our boys in a G Wagon. Pro athletes can, so they do. And then they get DUIs.

I'm sorry if I don't accept this is a legitimate excuse. You can allow your driver to drive your Porsche for you if you're so concerned with appearances, no?
August 25th, 2014 at 9:12 PM ^
Everyone knows a porsche, fame, and millions of dollars doesn't get you laid unless you drive the car yourself. It's in the fine print.

I always feel pretty pimp getting out of an Uber black car. I get what you are saying and obviously there is no excuse for putting people's lives at danger, but it seems insecure when you want to show off your status with your car. It's actually pretty pathetic.

If I were Denard I almost want to get cut at this point to hit the open market and find another team that will use him properly.

Athlete types thrive in space, which he won't find in Jacksonville. Going to a team that has a good quarterback and a vertical passing game that stretches the defense would be his best option.

I'd like to see what the Eagles do with him

the Saints drafted Brandin Cooks to fill Sproles role at WR. Sproles is essentially a WR for them.

Isn't is just Gerhart and Toddman ahead of him? He's also a hell of a gunner, given that speed (though not sure if he can tackle). I hate the idea of him not making the roster and being given a chance to play.
But the last game surprised me - all the news seemed to be positive recently. It made me thing maybe he fumbled again in practice.
August 25th, 2014 at 5:23 PM ^
Don't they say the easiest way to make an NFL roster is to show coaches you can play on special teams?
If he is showing that well as a gunner, I have to think he makes the team.

I'm worried about Will Campbell. I follow the Jets pretty closely (even pre-season) and haven't heard a peep about him since he was drafted. We have some semi-serious O-line concerns, and his name hasn't even been brought up as someone who could potentially contribute. I know they weren't expecting immediate impact from guy changing positions, he's gonna have to show something soon if he wants to stick around.

but I never saw his number on the field. Only a couple shots of him watching sadly from the sideline. This past week he was listed as "did not play." Hope he gets on the field this week if only to let other teams think about him. Or perhaps the Jets know he's not ready and are still hoping to keep him for the practice squad.

I do know that he spent a whole lot of time at Rick's this Spring, which I can't imagine helps your ability to play professional football.

Bills fan here. Branch was already in trouble before the DUI. He hasn't played well and was relegated to third string, 4th quarter play in the previous preseason game.
August 25th, 2014 at 5:44 PM ^
and didn't take part in "voluntary" off-season activities/conditioning. So yes, the DUI made their decision easy.

Fitzgerald Toussaint is right on the bubble right now in terms of making the Ravens. Hope he can stick around he has NFL talent.
Running Backs (4)
In: Pierce, Taliaferro, Forsett (3) **Rice (roster exemption)
Out: Cierre Wood, Fitzgerald Toussaint
NOTES: With Rice, Pierce and Taliaferro getting all the carries that matter, the Ravens will hang onto Justin Forsett given his experience with Kubiak’s offense for at least the duration of Rice’s two-game suspension. Wood or Toussaint could use the final preseason game to state their case to hang around during Rice’s suspension.

but his pass-blocking left a lot to be desired. If a RB can't pass-block in the NFL, he's not gonna play for very long. Hopefully he's improved that aspect of his game.

Wood was cut today. That one stuck out because, IIRC, he left ND early and entered the drat after his Junior year.
August 25th, 2014 at 6:26 PM ^
Cierre Wood made the final roster cuts with Houston Texans in 2013 and was later released during the regular season for using marijuana at the team hotel the night before a road game. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/10/22/texans-marijuana-rookies-cut_n…

One of those put on IR one day and cut the next. Reached an injury settlement. (Injury listed as "undisclosed.")
But better news out of Tampa Bay, Omameh is the starting left guard! They stole him off the 49'ers practice squad late last season.
August 25th, 2014 at 5:52 PM ^
Kind of crazy to think how poor the 2012 oline was but yet they had 3 nfl players on it (Omameh, Lewan and Schofield).

It looks like Kenny Demens has a great shot to make the Arizona Cardinals team. I was quite surprised to hear his name on the telecast last night. Maybe the beaver incident really did work...

As long as I'm checking depth charts: He's #2, backing up one Larry Foote. (Still a starter after all these years.)

I saw that Pro Football Focus listed Molk as the 2nd best performer at center and Brandon Graham as the 2nd best performer at DE for the preseason.
Obviously, it's the preseason, but definitely good signs for both guys. For Molk trying to lock down a starting job in the wake of an injury, and for Graham to finally be healthy and performing up to his full capabilities.
