NFL - recent cuts for UM players

Submitted by jtmc33 on

I am probably missing a couple so please add.  Here is what I saw looking through each teams' cuts from Tuesday (all needed to cut from 92 to 75):

Jay Feely (Arizona)

Alan Branch (Buffalo)

Craig Roh (Carolina)

Martell Webb (Cleveland)

Jibreel Black (T.B.)

Feely will land somewhere as he is a kicker and is "only" in his late-30s.  Branch was a victim of his own stupid decision to drive drunk otherwise he was assured a spot in the DL rotation in Buffalo.

All  others will have to see if they are picked up by another team , and if not, then hope to sign with a practice squad.  NFL increased practice sqauds from 7 to 10 so there is extra room on rosters in 2014.

It amazes me how these guys either cannot find or do not allow other people to drive them when they drink. I mean, how hard could it be for Alan freaking Branch to find someone to driver him around all year?

It really is sad to see people's careers fall apart because of this. Of course, it's much sadder to see what happens to the people that are inevitably victims when these guys get behind the wheel

People say this all the time, but it's not that simple.  Could Alan Branch call a cab or a limo?  Of course.  But the problem with that is so can you and I.  NFL players (and other hot-shot types) pay big money for their cars, and the biggest reason to do that is to show it off to your friends and the ladies.

You (I assume) or I can't take the girl I just picked up at the bar out to our Rolls or Porsche and take her home, or roll up to the club with our boys in a G Wagon.  Pro athletes can, so they do. And then they get DUIs.

I always feel pretty pimp getting out of an Uber black car.  I get what you are saying and obviously there is no excuse for putting people's lives at danger, but it seems insecure when you want to show off your status with your car.  It's actually pretty pathetic.

Next round of cuts is where you see the interesting decisions typically play out and there are definitely some big Michigan names on roster bubbles. For instance, If I'm Denard, I don't love my chances right now. Two carries during the last minutes of the 3rd preseason game don't bode well.

Perhaps, but I'm not sure what "properly" means in regards to his NFL role. Most athlete type guys beat you with run and catch. Denard just doesn't have reciver instincts, so he is basically a change of pace running back that lacks blocking ability.ToTough to find a roster spot for that.

Do you have a specific team in mind that has an explosive vertical offense but doesn't already have an established guy in the athlete role? saints replacement for Sproles maybe, though Sproles was a huge receiving threat.

Isn't is just Gerhart and Toddman ahead of him?  He's also a hell of a gunner, given that speed (though not sure if he can tackle).  I hate the idea of him not making the roster and being given a chance to play.

But the last game surprised me - all the news seemed to be positive recently.  It made me thing maybe he fumbled again in practice.

Yeah, the lack of depth for Jacksonville at the rb position works in Denard's favor. That said, as teams make final cuts, the bottom parts of rosters of high waiver priority teams can turn over quickly which would cause some concern. For instance if someone like a mikael LeShore is cut, some team is going to pick him up just by virtue of where he was drafted, and it will cost someone his job.

I'm worried about Will Campbell. I follow the Jets pretty closely (even pre-season) and haven't heard a peep about him since he was drafted. We have some semi-serious O-line concerns, and his name hasn't even been brought up as someone who could potentially contribute. I know they weren't expecting immediate impact from guy changing positions, he's gonna have to show something soon if he wants to stick around.

but I never saw his number on the field.  Only a couple shots of him watching sadly from the sideline.  This past week he was listed as "did not play."  Hope he gets on the field this week if only to let other teams think about him.  Or perhaps the Jets know he's not ready and are still hoping to keep him for the practice squad.

Bills fan here. Branch was already in trouble before the DUI. He hasn't played well and was relegated to third string, 4th quarter play in the previous preseason game.

Fitzgerald Toussaint is right on the bubble right now in terms of making the Ravens.  Hope he can stick around he has NFL talent.

Running Backs (4)

In: Pierce, Taliaferro, Forsett (3)  **Rice (roster exemption)

Out: Cierre Wood, Fitzgerald Toussaint

NOTES: With Rice, Pierce and Taliaferro getting all the carries that matter, the Ravens will hang onto Justin Forsett given his experience with Kubiak’s offense for at least the duration of Rice’s two-game suspension. Wood or Toussaint could use the final preseason game to state their case to hang around during Rice’s suspension.

God bless Fitz, but saying he has NFL talent is a bit of a stretch. He was a solid but at times underwhelming college player, doesn't have top end speed, and doesn't have elite wiggle. And his vision is amongst the worst I've seen from a Michigan back, he didn't do the oline any favors last year (nor did they him).

One of those put on IR one day and cut the next.  Reached an injury settlement.  (Injury listed as "undisclosed.")

But better news out of Tampa Bay, Omameh is the starting left guard!  They stole him off the 49'ers practice squad late last season.

Yes and no. The 2012 line protected the passer well and that's what the NFL is all about. No one really drives anyone off the ball in the league. Pass protect and do a little walling off of defenders in the run game and you've got a job.

He won't get cut. But with that said, I can't be the only person that would love to see Denard in an Eagles uniform. You have to think that someone with such astonishing playmaking ability would find a way to thrive in Chip Kelly's offense...

I saw that Pro Football Focus listed Molk as the 2nd best performer at center and Brandon Graham as the 2nd best performer at DE for the preseason.

Obviously, it's the preseason, but definitely good signs for both guys. For Molk trying to lock down a starting job in the wake of an injury, and for Graham to finally be healthy and performing up to his full capabilities.
