NFL Mock Draft, 2019 1st Round - Gary to Lions, Patterson to Chargers

Submitted by Mike Damone on

Gotta love the sports websites that can't even wait a week past the 2018 NFL Draft to start the conjecture on the 2019 Draft.  SB Nation issued their mock 2019 Draft, and have Rashan Gary going to the Lions at pick #16, and Shea Patterson going to the Chargers at pick #22.

For fun notes here:

1) Shea is 3rd QB off the board in this mock draft, behind Justin Hebert of Oregon and Drew Lock of Missouri.  CBS Sports also has Shea going in 1st round in their 2019 Mock Draft, #24 to Jacksonville.

2) Gary selected much later than other DTs and DEs, including Nick Bosa of OSU.  Hard to believe he wouldn't be a top 5-10 pick.

Can't believe we just got Shea on board - and now he is already projected as gone.  The hype train is moving fast - going to be a wild Fall 2018!

He's come out before and said he wants to be in the NFL after next year, whether he stayed at Ole Miss or came here. The only way he doesn't leave is if he either doesn't win the job, or plays poorly and loses it to Peters/McCaffery at some point.

I honestly don't mind if he's a one year guy. As long as he brings results, I'm good with whatever he wants to do.

the pre-season hype last year (All-American 2nd team) did not fully pan out for him.  Yes, he was double-teamed a ton and battled a shoulder injury that slowed him a bit.  However, he has a lot to prove inorder to jump all the way to a top 10 pick.  Those guys at DE are rare birds in their junior year.  Gary may need another season (beyond 2018) of ascending college performance to get top 10 money.  He has to prove a higher celing to be a top 10 pick.

Brees was the 32nd pick in the 2001 NFL Draft - very 1st pick of the 2nd round.

FWIW, that was the last year the NFL had 31 teams.  The Houston Texans joined in 2002 and the 32nd pick that year fell within the 1st Round.

Shea is probably going to change, not just the qb position, but the entire sport and sports in general. I mean the king mineral predicted that shea was eligible before the NCAA knew. Also, we are winning back to back championships in 2020 and 2021. Thank you Mineral King your unquestionably strong observations are beyond repute. Anyone suggesting they need evidence are "fake news". I know we aren't nice to you sometimes but it is because we love the real fans!!! Go Blue NAY!!! Go Mineral King. #freemineralking

the BIG does have at least 4 bona fide starting QBs in the NFL, two of which are among the greatest that have every played.  Not sure if any other conference has more currently at starter.

Given that, perhaps a little strong to call it a "crappy track record for the conference".  Sounds more like a crappy track record for the evaluators of QB talent...

FCS 4, Big XII 3, American 2, MAC 1, MWC 1 ---- that's the 32 NFL starting QBs.  That's counting McCown instead of Darnold, Tyrod Taylor instead of Mayfield, McCarron instead of Allen and Bradford instead of Rosen (e.g., it's probably different come December).

Bonus points for the B1G because Brady and Brees are sure Hall-of-Famers, and no other conference has one of those except for the Pac-12 (Rodgers) and MAC (Big Ben).  But we're still a bit below some other conferences in terms of absolute number of starters.

That said, Brady and Brees are the two oldest QBs in the league (by some distance), and Wilson was found by and developed at NC State. Cousins is the only current pro starter that the Big Ten has truly produced in over a decade.

I am supoer excited to see Gary this year just dominate guys.  I am excited, though far less confident, that Patterson will look like a first-round QB this year.  But whatever, it's the offseason; no reason not to be irrationally excited.

shaping up to be a pretty ridiculous DL draft class given some of the eligible prospects.  gary is a beast and should go early first but tough to argue if teams prefer dudes like lawrence or bosa (just as itd be tough to argue with gary going first)
