NFL Draft: Who do you want for the Lions?

Submitted by uncle leo on

Surprisingly enough, the NFL draft is here and its been more quiet than I am used to. Normally there is a good month of non-stop talk, but I do not think that is the case this year.

For me, I want to see Derrius Guice. Enough of the tip-toeing around the running back situation. The Lions have not had a 100 yard rusher in a millenium. The offensive line has been pretty well addressed with Lang, Wagner, and hopefully a healthy Decker. They cannot keep trotting out guys like Abdullah, Riddick, etc...

I think a case can be made for most of the positions on this team; however, I want to see the Lions get a guy they can plug in the backfield and provide a much-needed spark.

Remember that now the Lions coaching staff and front office both came up through the Patriots' organization. In recent history, the Patriots have drafted a lot of front-seven players and offensive linemen in the first few rounds. They've only drafted one RB above the third round since 2006.

The problem is every year it seems like the lions are drafting to replace one of their best players who’s inevitably leaving rather than to fix a glaring problem and build on what’s there. This year it’s Tate and Ansah. Two of our best players (although injuries have hampered Ansah) who are very likely not going to stick around. Before it was Suh, Megatron, Levy.. could go on and on. We just have a culture of losing that is rivaled only by the Browns in all of sports.

In fact they have right around 12th best record in the NFL in the last 7 years combined.

Suh, Megatron and Levy (who was cut and never picked up by another team) thankfully were all let go saving the team tens of millions of dollars. It's not about how good someone is but how good they are in relationship to their yearly salary in the NFL and in the case of each one of those guys they were all overpaid and overvalued.

The 12th best record gets you out of the playoffs early or just outside the playoffs with a shitty draft pick, and that's exactly what they've gotten.  And I don't care if they were let go to save money, they were stars that had to be replaced.  I'm just saying that's the reality of the Lions.  They run out of time with their stars before they can construct a team around them.

I mean, doesn’t he fit perfectly here? It’s the right spot in the draft, and he would add instant pass rush to the interior DL next to A’Shawn Robinson. I was really disappointed when that article came out a couple days ago with “sources” saying that the Lions “weren’t big fans of his game.” I mean wut? Otherwise...best player available.

Vita vea, Leighton vander esch, derwin james, Da'ron Payne, will Hernandez, isaah Wynn, rashad evans, Rashaad Penny, Nick Chubb, Ronald Jones, James Daniels.

I havent payed attention to this years prospects but i would be very happy with any of these guys.

Dont want Harold Landry or Derrius Guice at 20.

Also i think Josh Allen is the best QB prospect. Seeing as the Browns have the first pick though i have no clue which one they will take.

EDIT** add Marcus Davenport to the list. Im just now watching his film and holy hell this guy is a freak. Very raw and needs a lot of technique work. But has all the tools to be special.

Very underrated athleticism. Size with large frame. Intelligence. Amazing footwork. Good release. Good pocket awareness. Vision. Leadership.

The accuracy and touch on short passes will take some work. But put all of the above together with his rocket arm and in 3 years you have a top 10 quarterback.

EDIT** played in pro style offense at Wyoming and looks really good at selling the play action.

after each Lions pick (1st round, 2nd, 3rd and so on) telling us all how the Lions screwed up by not taking some guy they watched a 3 minute highlight video on youtube of. Here comes the wannabe NFL GM's with their in-depth analysis as they claim to know more despite working all day in an office and watching some Mel Kiper tidbits the last few months over the guys who study this stuff with a staff of probably 20+ guys year round.
