Next Seasons Legend Jerseys

Submitted by Tate on

With all this talk about whether or not Peppers would take #2 if he were offered the number, it got me thinking...

Next year, who do you think gets the other legends jerseys (if anyone)?

Would it be too much to see Funchess go from 19 - 87 - 21?

Just would like to see a discussion on who you believe deserves what.

EDIT: And this is not me saying that I believe that Peppers will get #2 next year.

As in, once the seniors wearing legends jerseys graduate, the coaches shouldn't just sit down and say, "Okay, who wears the number now?"  It should be more like the #1 jersey, given when deserved.

then you've got jerseys like #21, which Junior had been wearing for five years before it was given the Legends treatment, so it's just as much his as it was Desmond's.  So the flip side is that maybe the jerseys should only be given to freshman so that the number is fully theirs.

I don't know, man.  I've got myself talking in circles.

So did Garnder really disgrace the #98 because he didn't win the Heisman, or get a standing O from Ohio State fans? (although he did get a lot of appreciation on twitter...)

Did Mark Harmon say that he was glad that his dad's efforts and acheivements would be recognized, but that if Gardner wasn't good enough it would be a disgrace?

No. These jerseys are to be worn and used and played in. Obviously the 3 heisman winner's jerseys wont be lived up to every year (I assume the #2 is getting the treatment really soon) because Michigan players won't come in 1-2-3 in the Heisman every year. That's not the point. The point is "Desmond was great. We should make sure that when #21 is on the field we think of Desmond Howard". Not "Man, Gardner really tarnished Harmon's legacy"

...character that won't have "Legends" jerseys named after them. There are plenty of current Michigan players with great character that will never get to wear a legends jersey. DG played with tremendous heart, injuries, no running game and a less than stellar O line...I never said he disgraced Harmon's jersey....but take out Minnesota, Notre Dame, Indiana and Ohio games...this wasn't a very legendary season behind center.

Part me wonders if all the dislike of the legacy numbers is just due to a gut reaction to dislike any change or anything that might make the AD more money.

The fact that Gallon wore #21 stands out little in my mind when I think or talk about him. I recall what he did first, and his number only comes up in that memory or discussion. The fact that he shares a number with Desmond only adds to his story. It does not detract from it. In addition, 98 is Garnder's number now. The fact that Harmon wore it only adds to Garner's story. The legacy numbers only add to a new legacy, they do not detract from it.

I hate it because it's stupid, not just because it's part of a bigger picture of completely boneheaded, marketing-driven moves coming out of this Athletic Department. There were many other ways Michigan could have gone about honoring and publicizing their retired numbers, a tradition that went back to the second Tom Harmon took off his #98 jersey for the last time. This is just about the cheesiest and least appealing of those options.

Plus, the goofy, oversized patches look like they were designed by a high school design class. Not to mention the fact they couldn't even bother to come up with a white version for the away jerseys.

[retracted long, winding, boring statement meant to convince you that your opinion is wrong, as if an opinion can be wrong].

I'll save both you and I the time and effort.

But, I am going to remember your comment. For it is legendary! In fact, it's all I will ever associate with you Bando. #97 will live on! Well done!

I'm in the same boat with you, though if they switched those terrible patches it would be a bit better.  Why not just a small patch with the initials of the legend ("DH", "TH", etc.)?  Better than that; just get rid of it all, but that won't happen, so maybe just make them less tacky.

if its possible to ask the players currently wearing legends numbers and hear what they think, if its stupid or not.  Of course, it'll never happen or they'd just say they love it because its the classiest thing to say and our guys wearing those numbers are nothing but class and most deserving, thus why they were selected for the honor in the first place.

I wonder if that's true.

I am cheap, but also judgmental. So I don't buy jerseys because I would still have to wear them after a player leaves and that would look dumb.

I actually think I would buy a number 2 jersey if it was worn by Woodson, an expected Peppers and future stars. No name, just the legacy.

I could wear it for a long time and use it to support the present instead of the past.

I bet other people might come to the same conclusion, thereby causing a temporary uptick in sales, but a long term drain on sales that would normally come from turnover.

to not assign #21.  Not a lot of good fits at the moment, so give the jersey a year off until someone steps forward to claim it with their performance.  These are legends jerseys.

I try to look at it from the players' perspective. From the moment they start getting recruited, they are sold on the tradition and history of Michigan. They are inspired to play hard to honor current and former Michigan men. So to be given a legends jersey must be considered a tremendous symbol of trust and respect. I am certain the players have the opportunity to decline. (Who can say it hasn't happened already?) But why would you in the Michigan team environment? That said, I like the idea of using highly valued numbers as a recruiting tool, especially numbers like 1, 2, and 16 that have not yet been bestowed "Legends" satus.
