Anybody else notice that scout is saying Newsome has re-opened recruitment?

i told you this would happenn...see....newsome saw that rr started sheridan...so he knows that rr is a liar and isnt adapting his sytem...newsome needs to have a strong confidence in himself...rr is ovvisuly a liar and couldnt provide that...so he is looking for a coach that wont lie to him about systems...he kows rr wil ltry to make him a pocket passer...ebcause he wants to do the opposite of what his players can do...to try and prove he is a good coach...like degree of diificulty challenge....in my movie "i'm a moron 2: electric bugaloo" a boy has to make the same type of decision...he decides to go with the coach who isnt a liar...you laugh at me now but you'll see...in six onths 100000 will agree with what im saying....newsome shouldnt be here anywhay...he isnt a michigan man....he doesnt have the heart....ge has the psyche of a nine year old girl with emotional disorders...he obviously thinks he can jsut waltz in and beat a walk on for the qb spot...id rather have forcier...at least hes white....

I was really counting on Newsome because I do not think I could take Shav'd Beaver in the backfield and all of the faux pas of the announcers.

"That defensive lineman is chasing down Beaver"

"Yeah, they've really been hitting Beaver hard this game"

"I think a flag should be thrown.  That linebacker just speared Beaver"

The absolute worse:  "Yeah, Ohio State has been all over Michigan's Beaver today"

If Mike Cox is also in the backfield, I would have to play all of the games with the sound off.  I really hope Newsome or some other QB commits.

Honestly, this could be a blessing in disguise.  If Tate signs with us, I think he will be a better player than Newsome.  He seems to really love UM, he's much more refined and although isn't a physical freak like Newsome, he seems to be very athletic.  I'll shoot him an email and tell him to commit.  Is that a violation?

This is why I no longer put much effort into following recruiting.  Sure, I'll check the board as it's posted, but for fuck's sake, these are highly influenceable 17 year olds.  Maybe 2 girls offered him a threesome to decommit.  Hell, I'd have accepted that deal.  He just reopened his recruitment, maybe he wants some free vacations.  This has nothing at all to do with his character or whether he would be a good fit for Michigan.

So do you think this is tied to the recent offer for instate 2010 QB Devin Gardner?  I mean, the initial wavering he was doing was due to Beaver/Forcier.  Is he just scared of competition or what?  Or is it meddling parents that want him to stay in VA?

Or maybe he just made his decision too soon and had second thoughts? No. Has to be that he was scared of competition or evil parents.

ShockFX

If he's that indecisive we don't want him anyway.  If he can't stick with his first decision to attend a school for the next 4 years of his life that will give him a college degree and prepare him for the NFL, then how the hell can we expect him to make the right decision on the zone read?  I think Sheridan can start the next 4 years anyway, guy loves Michigan and is fuckin' scrappy.

Competition and parent influences are what I call "second thoughts".  There's a reason someone has second thoughts, just trying to pinpoint his, especially after saying he was rock solid Blue a couple weeks ago.

woodfeld

August 19th, 2008 at 3:26 PM ^

I didn't say I didn't believe him.  He's very much allowed to have second thoughts and do whatever is best for him.  I was just curious as to what has changed for him.  Was it an issue of recruiting other guys when he thought he was "their guy" or what?  The only thing that happened between now and the Top Gun camp when he was a firm commit was the offer to Gardner.  Obviously, this is all moot if it's something else like his parents wanting him to be closer to home, friends in his ear, etc.

You're right you didn't.  But I'd recommend asking the question without the speculation attached.  The speculation makes you look like a garden variety Scout/Rivals person, or a troll.  And since you seem reasonable and able to form complete sentences without falling to "OMG I never said that arghhghg fuck you guys", I think we were overly harsh, sorry.

Also, if you're scared of competition at QB you either pull a Joe Flacco and go to a D-AA school, or you go to Penn State.  And yes, I know Flacco xferred from Pitt to Delaware.

I should rephrase "scared of competition" to "wants them to stroke his ego".  Since most of us know that almost all D1 recruits think they are going to be superstars in the NFL, they aren't really afraid of competition.  But offering schollies to other QB's if you think "i'm the man.  you don't need anyone else." will give you reason to have second thoughts as you might think they don't trust you and your ability.

It'll be interesting to see what happens with him....

I wonder whether, assuming Forcier signs, this increases our likelihood of signing McNeal and other top wide receivers.  How's Forcier's downfield passing?  (I know he's lethal on the intermediate routes, which I love to see in a young kid.)

Personally, I love Forcier's highlight films and he's my favorite QB in the entire class. He seems perfect for what I hope our offense will look like, is obviously an extremely accurate QB (in his HS system at least), and although is not a track star, has exceptional game speed and playmaking ability. As far as I saw (not a ton), his downfield passing is pretty good too and he's definitely got arm strength. My only concern is his size...I'm really biased against short/small QBs and he reminds me a bit of Drew Tate from Iowa (hopefully minus the complete mental meltdowns). That is where I'm glad we already Shavodrick, b/c he may be thin now but he can certainly put on weight.

This is all assuming he will eventually commit here and Newsome doesn't re-commit.

Assuming the WR's we have stay in the fold (and McNeal just dropped all the visits he was planning on taking), I don't think we'll recruit anymore for this class, regardless of who the QB is. Also, I doubt that these kids would base their commitment on Forcier, as it's not a guarantee Forcier will even start - Beaver is rated higher by Rivals.

kgh10

They must've updated this before you had a chance to look, but Beaver is not rated higher than Forcier by Rivals. Beaver is 8th, and Tate 6th. Scout has them 25th and 12th respectively (and as many already know, they do not separate their D-T and Pro style). Also, based on QB offers, Tate looks like the better QB. Either way, it's definitely reassuring that Beaver seems very solid on his committment.

I keep forgetting that Beaver ranks ahead of Forcier.  TF just seems more ready - the Beav needs a year of eating and lifting with Barwis so he doesn't get snapped in half, at least from the pictures I've seen.

...because I was on my third season of NCAA09 with Newsome at QB and now I have to go and change his name to Beaver. Minor inconveninces like that really cheese me off.

Good thing I didn't get that NEWSOME 4 HEISMAN tattoo I was planning, huh?

There's really not a lot of logic behind this de-commitment.  If Kev is looking at the system RR is attempting to implement this year and concluding it isn't a fit for him, he's just dim-witted.  RR is merely making do with what he's got this year.  Unless RR truly does have plans of running a two-QB system over the next 4 years, and there's no substance to believe he'd do so, Kev has proved only that he is as good at the disloyalty game as RR is.  RR has had two-QB systems in the past, yes, but only over 2 year periods when he's taking over the reigns at a new school.  Newsome was definitely showing to be the starter in 2010...so unless Kev got some info that either Beav is looking amazing, or that Sheridan or Threet are proving themselves too good to leapfrog, he's a moron.  I hope this isn't an omen of what our recruiting will look like into the future.

My last post was a passionate response from a fan who wants and expects the best for this football team.  I'm new to these threads, and unfortunately hadn't fully read Brian's blog philosophy.  I'll dial it down next time, and my apologies for the un-objective criticisms.  Thanks to kgh for the respectful warning.  The truth is, I'm a huge Newsome fan; I think he's smart, comes off confident and strong in interviews, and has phenominal potential in RR's or any system.  But it's my first season watching the recruiting so intimately, so now I know: it is what it is.

Welcome to the board, most of us are assholes so don't take anything we post personally. I think we all had a lot of hopes w/ Newsome even with his flaws. Nothing is set in stone, however, and he could still come. If not, we have Beaver and a few guys who could be just as good if not better that might sign eventually.

"If Kev is looking at the system RR is attempting to implement this year and concluding it isn't a fit for him, he's just dim-witted."

This is, obviously a hypothetical. So, you make up an assumption, and then claim he's stupid because of your assumption. No.

"Kev has proved only that he is as good at the disloyalty game as RR is."

How is Newsome disloyal? Is he less loyal than Michael Shaw, JT Floyd, Roy Roundtree, or Ricky Barnum? You're upset with him doing something in his own best interest, and not yours as a fan. And you're one of the guys that still wants Les, clearly.

"I hope this isn't an omen of what our recruiting will look like into the future."

Yes, every recruitment ever will follow the path of Kevin Newsome.

Everyone needs to realize that if one single recruit meant the difference between success and failure, we have far larger issues to discuss with the football team. He seems to be a fantastic talent with a brain between his ears.  But the kid needs to do what is in his best long term interest.

The worst case scenario would have been to have him accept a scholarship, and transfer after a year.  That would accomplish very little for him and leave us a year behind on developing a QB.  (That sounds familiar...)

I can't fault an 18 year old for changing his mind at this point.  How many of us changed majors or something similar leading up to freshman year or after matriculating?
