New Rivals 100 released

Not very kind to us. Bredeson in at #60 is our only commit listed. No Walker.

We have a 5* head coach

But combine a 5* coach with 5* player talent/potential, and you've got what Alabama and Ohio State have had in the last decade - a murderously elite program.

Obviously Gary at #1 is the big get. But there are a couple others in that list that we have a punchers chance for:
Devin Asiasi #46
David Long #81
If you care about their rankings, then nabbing three or four out of their top 100 would be pretty good. If you saw Khaleke Hudson's tape, then that should put your mind at ease about any of our commits that aren't in any service's top 100. That kid looks like an instant starter on ST and spread smasher on defense. If that kid is on one side of the field and Pep on the other by time we play OSU, I like our chances.

10 on the 247 composite as well. Which, all jokes aside, is probably the best rating system.
January 18th, 2016 at 2:11 PM ^
I find it odd that these services can be so far apart sometimes. I read that 247 was close to giving Onwenu a fifth star and he's not even in the Rivals Top 100. Oh well, I still think we have a very strong class this year.
January 18th, 2016 at 2:16 PM ^
I know I'll get bashed for saying this, but Harbaugh's recruiting has been good-not-great so far. 1 player currently committed in the top 100. 3 players from MI in there, none of which we landed.
Long and Gary would certainly improve this, but we're simply not recruiting like OSU, ND, Bama, etc.

wow. just wow.
selective perception bias at it's finest folks.
January 18th, 2016 at 2:23 PM ^
You can call it perception if you want, but those are facts. Whether or not you trust Rivals is another story.
January 18th, 2016 at 2:30 PM ^
It is objectively not a fact. Have you looked at team recruiting rankings for this year?
January 18th, 2016 at 2:34 PM ^
It is a fact that we have 1 of the top 100 currently. It is also fact that 3 kids on that list are from MI, and none are heading to AA. It is similarly factual that 7 on that list are commited to OSU.
January 18th, 2016 at 2:39 PM ^
And yet we still have a higher rated class than Notre Dame and Alabama, who you claim are recruiting better than Michigan.
January 18th, 2016 at 2:44 PM ^
See below. Rivals puts way too much emphasis on quantity, in my opinion.
January 18th, 2016 at 6:06 PM ^
The services all put too much emphasis on quantity. When Butch Jones first started at TN, they were signing 27-28 kids a class and were always near the top becasue of quantity.
January 18th, 2016 at 2:41 PM ^
It is also a fact that you are cherry picking statistics from one rating service and using that information as the basis for a bullshit conclusion. That is my opinion anyway.
January 18th, 2016 at 6:04 PM ^
OSU has nine on the top 100 list.
January 18th, 2016 at 2:33 PM ^
That's a pretty fast and loose use of the word "facts"

And are the frontrunner for the number 1 recruit.

Your bar for great is a lot higher than mine.
January 18th, 2016 at 2:33 PM ^
We are ranked that high because of quantity, not quality. We are ranked 11th in average star rating. I'd consider that good, not great.
I do expect this to change with all the changes/rumors swirling around. Adding Gary and Long while dropping Weaver would boost us quite a bit.
I still have faith in the staff and expect great things, but they just aren't recruiting at the level I had hoped (yet).
January 18th, 2016 at 2:43 PM ^
January 18th, 2016 at 2:47 PM ^
Yes, assuming we land Gary and Long, and drop some of the lower-rated kids, 2 weeks can and should change quite a bit. Time will tell.

He's got almost 8k points so it is unlikely he has been a hidden OSU fan all this time. Rather, I think he is terrible at interpreting recruiting prowess.
January 18th, 2016 at 4:16 PM ^
I feel like a broken record, but the team recruiting rankings are based on only the top 20 recruits in each class. Quantity has little to do with it at this point, since many teams have 20 or more recruits. Michigan is currently #5 on Rivals, and 3 of the 4 teams ahead of them have 20+ recruits.
January 18th, 2016 at 4:56 PM ^
Georgia has the highest Rivals average, at 3.94. They have 2 5-star and 11 4-star kids. However, Rivals only has them ranked 9th because they have only 16 commits. Quantity is still a big factor.
January 18th, 2016 at 5:06 PM ^
But they might fill out their class with 3-stars. And we might fill it out with a 5-star and a couple high 4-stars. Who knows?
But if the class ended today, we're ranked higher because we have more "bullets in the chamber." There should be a cutoff (which is 20), but you also can't say that a class that has three commits (all 5-stars) should be the best recruiting class in the country. So it strikes a balance between quantity and quality.
January 18th, 2016 at 5:24 PM ^
You're right. It is a balance, but I just feel it should be tweaked a bit. Teams like Georgia, Clemson, and USC are getting "punished" a little in the rankings because they have fewer than 20 commits. And that's where I think looking at average star rating is a better metric.
But because I didn't state that Harbaugh is the greatest human being ever born, I am also a total moron. So take what I say with a grain of salt.
January 18th, 2016 at 7:04 PM ^
I don't think you're a moron. I just think you're wrong.

January 18th, 2016 at 7:23 PM ^
No, but if they had something like 16 or 17 4-stars, I'd say they probably have the best class, though Rivals would disagree (e.g. Georgia).
January 18th, 2016 at 6:24 PM ^
Magnus,
How much of a difference in talent is there between a guy like Nauta and Chase Allen? I'm curious as to your expert opinion. Does Allen have as high a ceiling?
January 18th, 2016 at 2:30 PM ^
"we're simply not recruiting like OSU, ND, Bama, etc."
Our class is rated higher than each of those schools besides OSU. It's #3 in the country.

"...but Harbaugh's recruiting has been good-not-great so far in terms of recruiting site player evaluations."
Seriously, just for a few minutes, go back and take a look at what the recruits he brought to Stanford went on to do compared to their "star" rankings. He knows what he's looking for and that doesn't necessarily jive with the pay site player evaluations (and even so he's still doing a damn good job), but the proof is in the outcomes.

Harbaugh is the greatest recruiter in football. Never say anything negative about Harbaugh again.
