New Name for Big Ten?

Submitted by Ziff72 on February 12th, 2010 at 9:21 AM

If expansion happens with the Big Ten is their any speculation on the name of the conference?

The Big Ten is a powerful brand name and it was cute what they did when they added 11. What do they do with 12?

Obviously Big 12 is out. Do they stick to Big Ten even if we have 14 teams?? Big Midwest??

It seems like every conference in the south or east loves to market their location. Atlantic Coast, Big East, Southeast, etc. Why not the Big North? I would like the Great Lakes Conference, but 1) that's already taken by some DII conference, and 2) the schools that aren't actually on the Great Lakes might have an issue with that.

JMO, but if they didn't change it when they expanded to eleven, I don't see why they would consider changing it now. Eleven doesn't equal ten anymore than twelve or fourteen does.

If they do decide to change it though, J Leman and Ricky Stanzi vote for Big America Conference.

Well, since the conference names don't really matter (Big Sky? Conference USA?) and they're the original conference, they'll probably just stick with Big Ten. Obviously not actually having exactly ten teams hasn't been a problem. They'll find some cheeky way to include the real number in the logo.

edit: Barwis beat me.

If they called themselves "THE University" not only would it be hilarious, it would subtlely imply that all other universities are inferior. By adamantly referring to the Columbus campus as "The Ohio State University", they are showing their petulance after having lost a power struggle with those pesky Bobcats over at The Ohio University. But I see your point.

have a shoreline on the Great Lakes. So something like the Great Lakes Conference (GLC). I know, boring.

Either that or go back to the original Intercollegiate Conference of Faculty Representatives.

Big Ten! Family Size! Now, more schools for the same great price! Use your credit card to order in the next ten minutes and we'll throw in three more schools free! Sorry, no Irish allowed.

The IG in the Big Ten logo already looks suspiciously like a 16. If the Big Ten ends up shocking the world and adding five teams, I expect a History Channel special showing the hidden 16 in the Big Ten logo. Perhaps also a showing of links to Masons, the Big Ten Conference, and new Universities, maybe also the Knights Templar.

One of these:

1. "Michigan & Co." (since we have a winning FB record against all others in conference).

2. "The Iron League" (like the Ivy league, but with a reference to the steel/manufacturing that made the midwest so big.)

4. "The Big North" Mehh.

5. "The BTC" It sould lose the words "Big,""Ten," etc...but retain the acronym for history sake.

Three states have two teams, therefore, there are eight states in the present Big Ten footprint:

Michigan -- Michigan and Michigan A&M
Indiana -- Purdue and Indiana
Illinois -- Illinois and Northwestern
Ohio -- Ohio State
Minnesota -- Minnesota
Wisconsin -- Wisconsin
Iowa -- Iowa
Pennsylvania -- Penn State
