I received the paperback yesterday and am about 150 pages in. It made me realize how important UM football actually is to me personally. I may not fully believe in every saccharine infused value, but I do cherish how the well being of the program keeps me engaged with the university. I hope my kids will enjoy and grow from their experience in college as much as I did.

No way Jim ever leaves for money.  Would be purely wanting a Super Bowl ring, or that he had been run off.  And the latter ain't happening.

don't think Jim Harbaugh coaching the Lions at some point is that far fetched at all.  It would be the one NFL coaching job that he could take without making other major changes to his family structure, etc.  Additionally, if he is very successful at Michigan he could leave for the Lions and basically appoint a hand picked predecessor and leave with nothing but good will.  And for the Lions it would be a blank check scenario.  There are about three things in the world right now that would make care about the Lions.  One of them is if they were coached by Jim Harbaugh.  Don't get me wrong, I never want him to leave, but if he is going to take a pro job it might as well be the Lions.

retires. Or the Giants. Good point about the ownership and culture situation. The Lions would allow him to basically remain in his current home, pass down the UM program and keep an "eye" on things in AA. I wonder if the Fords would allow him to suggest GM and personnel people. I sure would like him to make 1 or 2 each of a Rose Bowl and NC first.

The more you think about it though, the more staying at Michigan makes more sense. Will he want to wake up and work in Allen Park every day and play at Ford Field, when he currently rules Schembechler Hall and Michigan Stadium? Trade the Big House for "Gillette" or "Met Life" stadium? Meh, I wouldn't be surprised if the Ravens ever let John go, he takes on a college program too and all of this competitive/need a SB ring stuff will be moot. John Harbaugh to Texas FTW.

is one reason why he would leave, and one reason only.  The NFL is the highest level that football is played and a Super Bowl champion is held in its highest regard.  Why do people who have climbed K2 still go climb Mt. Everest?  Because it there and it is taller, that's it.  There is something bigger out there and they haven't conquered it yet.

Harbaugh does seem like that type of person to me to a certain extent.  And to be within a quarter of it and not bring it home.  And to lose it to his brother.  I don't know how much he likes them apples.  I think he is here for a while, I am just not ready to call him a lifer.

You're assuming that Harbaugh is motivated by concrete goals. Yes the NFL and winning the SB is the apex of the sport in concrete terms. But what if he's motivated by more abstract challenges? By all accounts the guy is a deeply faithful Catholic & reads all kinds of "deep thinkers" for inspiration & to develop a personal philosophy. This is not a man who simply follows the common path. He's deeply mission driven from what j can tell. Based in the family moving to AA, and other context clues, it's entirely possible that he's AT his apex right now. And improvement simply means winning Big Ten titles, National titles, and most importantly, developing young men's characters as they grow into adulthood and having a huge platform for evangelizing the sport of football. The NFL doesn't really give him the opportunity to do those things. Michigan does. My belief is that unless something crazy happens that forces the AD to run Harbaugh out of town (huge scandal, off the field problems in the program, some oddball Woody Hayes or Bobby Knight scenario), the dude is here until he decides to retire from football.

I think the College National Championship is the toughest achievement. 2 losses and you are eliminated. In the NFL, you can have up to 8 or 9 losses and win their championship. With the restriction on practice hours, college is truly the highest coaching challenge.

As someone who doesn't follow the NFL, I'm genuinely curious about this.  Which would you prefer?

A -Harbaugh has a long, extremely successful tenure at U-M while the Lions remain the same old Lions.

OR

B - Harbaugh is successful here for a few years, then leaves for the Lions.  Michigan gradually declines without him while the Lions achieve Super Bowl glory.

I don't care about the Lions, at all.  Like, I would rather watch Wheel of Fortune than the Lions.  I would rather go to the dentist than go to a Lions game.

It is not even a question for me.  I choose choice A.

I am just saying, right this second, all things considered, if somebody told me I had to put $100 on what team I thought Harbaugh would coach if he does return to the NFL, my answer would be the Lions.  And the only thing in the world that I care about less than the Lions is the other 31 teams in the NFL so that would be the best option available, to me, assuming a return to the NFL does occur.

I suspect that they do so because it's like any other click-bait - even in broadcast media. They want to stir up controversy, which begets air time and ad dollars.

The Harbaughs march to their own drummers - none more so than Jim himself; so, it's possible that Jim could one day leave for some other team.

But I wouldn't bet my life on it.

to believe that Harbaugh is even our coach! The man is just a solid individual, and those young men on the team are better off because of it. Heck, I think in some ways, I as a fan am better because Harbaugh is our coach! He's not leaving, and even if he did, there is no way he would let Michigan collapse like it did the last time their was a bad coaching hire. I'm sure whoever the AD is will allow Harbaugh to annoint his successor, why wouldn't they?

Not sure if you saw his short piece on ESPN a few weeks ago, but the interviewer asked him what his plan was for after coaching.  His response was something along the lines of, "I've always had the plan to play football as long as I physically could, coach, then die".  The interviewer askd him to clarify his comment and Harbaugh responded with, "Play as long as I can, coach, die".  God I love this man.

You know the most convincing part from that article was the fact his folks moved here. They didn't do that when he lived in California, nor did they follow the other kids. I can imagine the conversation: "this is it, Dad. This is where we're going to settle. Move out here with us and we'll take care of you."

Dude ain't going anywhere.

Only people who are against us or haven't stepped foot in Ann Arbor once before think Harbaugh will leave.

Who has a better coach than us?

Who's coach loves their university more than ours?

There are very few things that make me smile more than Michigan and the love Harbaugh exhibits for Michigan on a daily basis.

I truly hope this man stays our head coach until he dies .....with 7 National Championships, 20 Big Ten Titles, and a 30-1 record against Staeeeee.

Go Blue!!!

Sounds like Coach Harbaugh and family have found their bliss.  Warms the soul.

Hard, if not impossible, to put a price on that kind of bliss.  Here is to hoping that lasts for

a long, long time.

“I didn’t like playing football here,” he said.

“Okay,” Sarah replied, sympathetically.

“I loved playing football here!”

These would seem to be the words of a man who will stick around for a nice, long time, and with the future now as bright as it is for Michigan football, I think we're all fine with that. Very happy he came home.
