NCAA Wrestling Day 2

So the first day is in the books and we've got the quarterfinals to look forward to tonight. Here are the Michigan wrestlers up today:

125 - 16 Mattin v 31 Meink (Campbell) - Consolation 2nd round

133 - 2 Micic v 7 DeSanto (Iowa) - Quarterfinals

141 - 8 Storr v 10 Gil (Navy) - Consolation 2nd round

149 - 33 Amine - out of tournament

157 - 4 Pantaleo v 5 Hidlay (NC State) - Quarterfinals

165 - 6 Massa v 28 Brolsma (Minnesota) - Consolation 2nd round

174 - 4 Amine v 5 Kutler (Lehigh) - Quarterfinals

184 - none

197 - none

285 - 5 Parris v 11 Haines - - Consolation 2nd round

Mattin is where we expected him to be. Demas beat Storr in the 2nd round, but that's not a shocker. But Storr has a tougher consolation match than we would normally expect as Gil was upset by the 23 seed. Massa is a huge disappointment, losing to 11 seed Steiert. But his road in the consolations shouldn't be terrible, so he still has a chance to be an AA. Parris was upset by conference rival Sam Stoll. Stoll has had a disappointing season, but he's capable as he finished 5th in NCAAs last year. This is also his senior season. While it was an upset, I wasn't shocked by the result as Parris is a freshmen in his first NCAAs, going up against a wily veteran. Could have three Michigan wrestlers in the quarterfinals. Micic is really our only hope for a national champion as Amine would have to go through Mark Hall and one of Lewis/Valencia to get the title. He's given Mark Hall trouble before though. Pantaleo is gonna run into Nolf in the semis if he wins and I just can't see him winning it.

As for the tournament as a whole, there were some big upsets. 15 Chip Ness from UNC beat 2 seeded Shakur Rasheed from Penn St in the 184 bracket. 5 Jacob Warner of Iowa was beat by 21 Thomas Lane. Stoll beating Parris was already mentioned. 22 Murin in the quarterfinals after beating 6 Carr at 141 is a surprise as well. 22 Ben Harvey beat 6 McFadden at 174.

Action starts at 11:00am on ESPN3 or Watch ESPN app.

Two semifinalists for Michigan.

Stevan Micic at 133 and Myles Amine at 174 win their quarterfinal matches.  Pantaleo loses at 157 in overtime.

Drew Mattin (125), Kanen Storr (141), Logan Massa (165) and Mason Parris (285) are all still alive in the consolations this morning, and Pantaleo (157) getting a rest until a big consolation match this evening for all-american status.

Penn State has a good lead over Ohio State in the team standings, with Michigan in 5th as of this moment...will probably be closer to 7th by the end of the session.

The semifinals will be tonight at 8:00 pm on ESPN.  Michigan's matchups:

133    #2 Stevan Micic (20-0) v #3 Nick Suriano (30-3), RUT
174    #4 Myles Amine (23-3) v #1 Mark Hall (32-0), PSU

Micic defeated Suriano, 3-2, in their only head-to-head match this season.

At 174, Hall has defeated Amine twice this season, both by 3-2 scores.  Hall defeated Amine twice last year as well, 4-3 and 6-5.

Tough loss for Micic. Shades of the first match early on with the difference today being Suriano's ability to finish on the leg which allowed him to shift to defense the rest of the match. No shame in losing to a guy like Suriano. Certainly won't be any easier next year with both Fix and Suriano back, plus the return of Seth Gross. Go take 3rd place now, young man!

Rooting hard for Pantaleo and Massa to win tonight and secure AA status. Let's see if Massa still has Marinelli's number.
