NCAA allows coaches to retweet recruits, Harbaugh participating

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

So while schools like PSU and Baylor continue to field football programs with no penalties, the NCAA has focused on more important things: social media.

They now allow coaches to retweet and like tweets from recruits.

Some coaches have already abused this. Rocky Top colleague being one of them who has racked up over 100 RTs since the new rule came into play recently.

Harbaugh just retweeted the commitment posts of Dylan McCaffrey and Josh Ross and just a few minutes ago retweeted DPJ posting a Michigan edit from March.

Jim Harbaugh's first two retweets are the top 2 players on #Michigan's 2017 board: QB commit Dylan McCaffrey and 5* WR Donovan Peoples-Jones

I have a feeling less will be more with this rule...at least I hope so...otherwise, there is going to be a poor GA with carpal tunnel in no time

I hope Harbaugh is reasonable with this. His own tweets are pure gold, and I'd hate for them to get lost in the shuffle of 100 retweets per day. It would feel sacrilegious to mute him. However, there are egos at stake here, so coach has to do what he must.

Edit: nvm I forgot you could hide retweets. Carry on coach.

Oh I could see Michigan getting punished. Haters going to hate. At other schools girls get molested/raped and little boys, well enough said. Heaven forbid that if Michigan has an edge you have to hammer that nail first right? Society boy I tell ya. I think we're going backwards.

I thought it meant that coaches could tweet *at* recruits, which seemed a bit silly. Now that I see that they are allowing them to retweet and like tweets from recruits, the rule seems to make sense.

But like everyone is saying, this is a stupid thing for the NCAA to be worrying about while other, inarguably more important, matters remain.

Although, I will say that the day Jim Harbaugh retweets anything posted on this blog is perhaps the day we officially make it, but then it also might be the day that traffic makes it so some of us can effectively never use the site again. This might be a lesser discussed reason that judicious use of the rule would perhaps be preferable.

Do you ever think Harbaugh feels like the fans are way too into him?

"This is a legal thing. Harbaugh does it! OMG!"

That's what he gets for being a GD Legend I guess.

When he jogged down State Street to get to the MDen for his gear before he went on stage, he was rushed by hundreds with security making a path for him to run through. It was like The Beatles and Hulk Hogan mixed into one, that reaction was.

here is why this new rule is doesn't make sense: coaches can't comment on commits by name until. They sign but can RT a commits commitment tweet which is basically commenting on a commits by name.

I'm not a fan of this new rule. I agree with most saying there are more important things that the NCAA should have been concerned about. Still while I don't agree I am happy to see our Coach taking advantage. There are many things that I think are "wrong" with the NCAA rules for recruiting but I'm over the days when Michigan forced its self to play on a different playing field than the other football powers in an attempt to hold a moral high ground.

I have mixed feelings but at this point I'm in it to win, not hold a moral high ground. I won't pretend to be better.

This rule was enacted at the same conference that banned satellite camps.  I thought (also, like a previous poster) thought that coaches could tweet at recruits - glad to see that isn't the case.

This is a move that "lower" level program head coaches will use much more. I think MAC schools and Purdue and Illinois type programs will retweet any player they have a chance at, Harbaugh, Saban, Meyer, Ash, etc. will do so a bit more judiciously.

I chose MAC to reference a  non-power 5 conference. Then chose Purdue and Illinois to represent what I thought were two familiar power 5 conference programs that are representative of programs similar to the MAC.

Including Ash with Harbaugh, Meyer, and Saban was sarcasm. Plus the huge rivalry implications.
