NC State takes Duke. Are we still number one if we lose to Ohio?

Givven Ohio is ranked above NC State and we beat NC State, are we still number one if we lose to Ohio?

I never rag on threads, but what the heck is the point of this?  We'll play them tomorrow and see what happens.  We can't predict how the voters will vote.  Then after that, regardless of what happens, we're both going to be high seeds in the tourny.

Clowney (the real one, not my donkey) ran in a straight, uncontested line and knocked the helmet off the smallest player on the field. This means that Carolina anything trumps everything else and they will become number one.

I have never been a huge basketball fan, even less so after that other stuff. This team makes it hard to remain aloof.

The only thing that matters is making it into the tourney as a relatively high seed, which we're virtually assured of achieving.

Plus the whole getting the top seed in the B1G tournament so we can win that, too...I'm sure Beilein and any plaer on the squad would laugh at this comment. They want to win EVERY game and the goal is to go undefeated until we happen to lose one. If that happens, then the goal is to have a 1-loss season, and so on.

Because the #1 team also lost to a team lower than the one we are playing. It's a legitimate question; I don't understand why everyone's getting so upset about it. While I think we'll win tomorrow, the OP is asking what people think will happen if somehow we lose.

I also think it's possible that even if we lose we still take the top spot. We'd have the "better" loss of the 1-loss teams.

Yes it is a legitimate question, but I think this question should be asked after the game tomorrow. Michigan has a chance to be ranked #1 after beating their hated rival Ohio State tomorrow. This would be amazingly gratifying if we win tomorrow. However, someone on a Michigan sports blog is asking who would be number 1 if Michigan loses tomorrow. Backlash will ensue.

I don't think the OP is a troll, and I think his intentions were of pure curiosity, but it's not hard to  think of reasons why people would get upset with a question like this.

Now, if we do lose tomorrow (which I don't think we will) we won't be ranked #1. Louisville has only lost to Duke and they will jump 2 spots to take it. If Louisville loses, Indiana will have only 1 loss and have just come off beating #8 Minn so they will become number 1 (Arizona lost). If we lose, Louisville and Indiana loses....I'm not playing this game.

People that do rankings do not like to move teams up after a loss. It looks bad in the papers and people will scream BIASED! and much backlash will ensue.

If we can't win tomorrow, I don't want to be #1. These next few games will tell us a lot about how good the team really is. OSU tomorrow, then followed by Minnesota and Illinois in the imminent future. Then there's Indiana. Tough stretch to say the least.

If we lost, either Duke would remain #1 or Indiana would to jump to #1. Duke beat Louisville head-to-head so I don't think they would leapfrog them in the polls.

Something tells me you are one of those "glass half empty" kinda guys.  Sheesh, that is not the first thought that comes to mind.

Frankly all that matters are the rankings in early April, everything else is just details.  That said to you question, no - Duke has a few big scalps on their mantel.  Michigan would not if they lost to OSU - I guess a pretty average Pitt team is their biggest win at this point.  Oh and NC State ;)

We can't "still" be number one if we weren't in the first place.  If we lose, that just means that the #1, #2 and #4 teams all lost this week, so the new number one would presumably be either the #3 team (Louisville) or #5 team (Indiana) - both of whom went undefeated this week.

We're playing to be the number 1 team in the country, over Duke, against our archrival during theyear that the final ramifications of the Fab 5 finally go away.

Beat Ohio.
