I can't get down with ketchup on a pasty. I don't like the gravy either, I just eat them dry. Wash down with a coke. Life is good.

Check out the MDOT Jobs website. They post a lot of State of Michigan positions on it, so I'm sure there is some kind of job their that Parks and Recreation background could fit for.

Some of those places have 600+ vertical feet, which makes for nice, long, runs. Not the Rocky Mountains, but it's amazing what a couple hundred of feet will do (above what you'd generally find in the Lower Peninsula).
Mt. Bohemia (*900* feet), too, as some have suggested.

Growing up in Southwest michigan I got to know ice skiing very well, as Mt Brighton was usually pretty busy every friday night. When I moved out east and Skied in Vermont (best tree skiing I've ever seen) I found that I suck at powder skiing. You ski differntly, and I kept getting too deep into the snow (When deep powder, anything more than a foot).
Just was surprised how much I had to change my skiing with leaning back to keep my tips up and keeping my skis more down hill. My skis were also more meant for ice than powder, which din't help either.

Also, people who live in the lower peninsula are called trolls. They live "below" the bridge.
I don't actually hear that very often, but I have heard it before.

If you are a hunter from below the bridge we call you "sugar beeters" or just "beeters". Because every time you guys come up here to hunt you always bring a massive pile of sugar beets.

I thought Yoopers were also called stump jumpers?

were called rednecks.

Hmmm.... noted.
to be fair, though, I don't think many people are mistaking me for a Yooper too often around here, what with my Ann Arbor bumper stickers and Detroit/U of M gear and general lack of camo. Also, I don't have a truck.

of a commute you're looking for, but consider Lake Linden, Hubbell, Dollar Bay even Calumet as alternatives to living in Houghton.

Why not Hancock?
December 14th, 2016 at 10:44 AM ^
being from a small community, I kind of lump Hancock in with Houghton. But sure, Hancock is also nice.

An ex girlfriend of mine worked in Houghton for a year. She was single so that might have led to a lot of problems. But as an ex contract specialist with the gov't i solicited plow estimates for our federal bldgs and leased locations nlt mid-september.

You may call them sleds or snow machines in NE. You will get between 200-300 inches of lake effect snow from October through May.

The Department of Natural Resources manage public lands. I think there are Public lands just south of Houghton. Years ago I had a friend who was a teacher in Marquette, MI and she worked during the summer months with the DNR.
