Why was their bball coach allowed to keep a rapist on his staff? Why did they shield one player after another from rape and assault charges? They were beating Michigan. They were winning.

I have some sympathy for what MSU has faced in UM's shadow, but consider: they were an utterly mediocre or worse institution just down the road from an immensely popular and prestigious one, about which the resentment. . . nutzo. After 2008 they faced crippling budget cuts.

MSU arguably built what national stature it had on the backs of Dantonio and Izzo.

There's a reason why those two guys were so close to Simon, and it isn't academics. There's a reason why Ferguson mentioned the new Breslin in his praise for her last week. This is what she worked on; this is what she allowed.

None of us think that the U of Alabama would be in many conversations about anything without football. And MSU, the #80 university in the country even now. . . football and basketball were MSU's bootstraps, and they were clearly willing to ignore a lot to be pulled up by them.

I mean yeah, I agree, that's all true. I'm not going to feel sorry for them. There are other academic institutions in the state that are considered to be lesser than both Michigan and Michigan State that manage to go about their business without the inferiority complex that occupies every Spartan. I'd much rather sit down and talk with a Chippewa or an Eagle than a Spartan. They do this to themselves, and if it's really that mindset that led to all of this, then everyone who has perpetuated the "anything to catch Michigan" attitude should feel the guilt from this horrible mess.

You nailed it. If they keep Izzo and Dantonio, they will forever cement their Little Brother status. What they fail to realize is that they were not Little Brother just because they were not winning, but rather because they have such an inferiority complex that they would do anything to come out ahead of Michigan in anything. And we are seeing just how dark and desperate that obsession has become.

Keeping those two coaches around despite their despicable actions basically is a tacit admission that MSU could never do any better. That their only chance to compete is to sacrifice any shred of integrity and put their students’ safety in jeopardy. Ironically, doing so makes them look like the two-bit school that they have always feared that they are.

The Dean of UM's Ross School is named Scott DeRue. He has a PhD from MSU. He was hired for this incredibly prestigious position because he was the best person for the job. "Best person for the job" should be all MSU is looking for in a president, for fucking fucking fucks sake...

for the permanent role. He is an expert in leadership, organizations and implementing strategic plans. Plus, he is young enough to set a long term path. High integrity and he cares about academics (MSU needs a lot of work to boost their academic reputation).

The tougher choice will be an interim Pres who is principled enough to move senior people, change processes and communicate openly. He/she will face lawyers, admin and coaches that have perfected obfuscation and deceit for years - now they will use their skills to stonewall the Pres.

All I could find in that article is that their short list of candidates have deep ties to the university. I don't see any exceptions listed other than that it will be someone who is not currently on staff.

January 28th, 2018 at 5:19 PM ^

Having “deep ties to MSU” and saying “no U-M grads” are two different things. Personally, I think having someone with deep affection for the university, but whose integrity is beyond rapproach, is a wise move.

So I read it a third time.  Then went back to this page to comment and saw many others did the same.  I do not think we need to add any sensationalism to this story.  If we ever get to the point where "You won't believe what _______ did next" level of posting starts to happen, I hope mods ready the ban hammer.

If someone asked me where any of our Presidents' Alma maters I could tell you Bollinger went to Columbia (because he left here to go there) and that's it. It shouldn't even matter under normal circumstances.

Hey, OP, I'll leave this up for a bit if you promise to change a few things - like, everything - about how you've protrayed and summarized this article, because nowhere in this article does it mention what you're describing.

Let me know if you're willing to oblige. Kthx.

In the OP's defense, he probably got the "no U-M grads" from this tweet:

It's probably not an explicit rule (would that be legal?) but an unofficial one.

Op got this from Brian’s retweet. The guy who posted the original article (I assume a reporter of some kind) says he heard that ppl are albino about no UM grads to appease slums and a MS minimum to appease faculty

How could Dan Enos raise his fist in the locker room to "The Victors"?

Did we seriously think he'd betray his alma mater & spartan pride?

(he'd more likely be a spy against us).

spartan blood runs very deep right now..... their hatred of Michigan is their ultimate character trait. Nearly 50 years of Michigan dominating them in sports with the recent 10 year swing in their favor has them in a fever for continuing their win saga.

They will DO ANYTHING to defeat Michigan in every sense of the word.

Having someone with a Michigan background lead their university would have their fans, alumni, students and staff in a tizzy fit.  Biggie Munn would roll over in his grave.

Geez, I saw 10 different 'dudes walking around at Kroger today' in the spartan gear, they ARE PROUD of the green/white due to their sports wins.  They don't care about institutional rape, FERGODSAKES they're beating MICHIGAN, that's all that matters.... to them.

They want that seething hatred for Michigan to remain strong.

and it's not the no Michigan rule. That makes sense to me. If there are to be unpopular moves made in cleaning up MSU's mess, and I assume there will be, it's better not to have skepticism and resistance based on them coming from a U of M grad.

On the other hand, relying on someone with deep ties to MSU seems completely wrongheaded. It will certainly look like they are circling the wagons at the worst possible time.
