Moderator Action Sticky 2017

New offseason, new sticky, because these get cumbrously long.

What this thread is for: It's an ad-hoc way of tracking what threads and comments get removed. Mods that remove a thread should post the title here with a brief reason as to why the thread is gone.

Don't comment in this thread unless you have to: if you leave an irrelevant comment in this thread it will be deleted (see: "cumbrously long").

Things we will moderate so hard that if we were the government you’d probably have a 1st Amendment case but we’re not so shaddup about your freedom of speech this ain’t no democracy it’s just a message board run by people who believe in democracy.

  1. Politics. Don’t you get enough of this everywhere else?

How moderation looks from our end.
  2. Noise. We ask our moderators to try really hard not to censor ideas, but we do control noise. If you’re getting a substantial amount of downvotes we’ll look to see if you’re posting an unpopular opinion that you can support. If you can’t support it politely and rationally, or if you don’t acknowledge the holes in your argument, it’s noise.
  3. Useless content from other sites. There are a lot of sites feeding a lot of Michigan content out there, and a lot of that is good stuff. But more than ever these days a lot of it is just stuff which tries to tickle your fancy or make you mad about something. 247, WTKA always get the benefit of the doubt.
  4. The Drew Sharp Memorial Don’t Feed the Professional Trolls Rule. Pete Finebaum has taken the place of the late Sharp. Valenti and Chatsports are the other two on the ban list. By the time you have enough points to post an article you should know that some people make a living off of trying to get the legions of Michigan fans angry enough to click.
  5. Bewbs and general misogyny/objectifying of women. We tried one year of this and our female readership shot up after being really low. This means it’s a good rule: however much you enjoy cutting loose with the guys, we have tens of thousands of readers it drives away.

Hall of Stickies Past:

The first, the second, the third. the fourth. The fifth. The sixth.

Agreed. He should have been gone the first time around, instead of a layover in Bolivia.

And as an aside, if any of these banned posters are coming from another poster who is still active here, then they should be gone as well.

have seemingly unlimited time and their purpose, once sent to Bolivia, is to thread-jack.

I have stopped asking for the moratorium on new accounts being able to post comments - there are probably good reasons why the blog and its mods might not want to do that.  Is there at least a way to prevent Boliva'd posters from being able to comment for a certain time?  Dragging down the quality level is all they have left, so that's where they focus their efforts.

it's part of the troll MO, to post at the end of threads when most users' attention has moved on. Legit users might do this occaisonally when finding a board post of interest, trolls do this to build up their points quickly.  They've got to get to that magic 100 so they can upvote their fellow troll accounts.  A few vapid posts, some upvotes and there they are.

Izzo's loss excuses are already in mid-season form

I don't know. Izzo placed it on himself, which doesn't seem like an excuse to me. That's just my two cents.

Anyway, this one wasn't going too well for that and other reasons.

since the user isn't going to be reading MGoBlog for the next few decades I figured he didn't need his account anymore.

Criticizing the writers on this site is fine and encouraged. Dickishly calling one out for muting you on Twitter is trolling.

If I wanted to post a weekly story about the MGoBlog ncaa 14 dynasty I’m running, would that go in diaries or on the board? Also do you advise for or against this?

You need more of a hook than that. Nobody cares about your dynasty unless there's something particularly relevant in it. Like if you got a blogger from every school in D-I to edit their teams and you played this out and did a writeup with highlights and you're really really funny about it.

I don't care about negs or people disagreeing with me. I do care about my ability to start threads. I do care that other people can call me all sorts of names without any consequnces but I not only can't post a thread about OL recruiting, I get punished for it. So yea, I will be bitching about it. Sue me.

I won't call you names. I will just be honest and straightforward. Your constant negativity makes the blog less enjoyable for everyone else. That might be tolerable if your negativity was accompanied by unique insight or analysis, but it's not. It's the same thing everyone else is thinking, just with more cynicism. The threshold for a post being allowed to stay on the blog is that it provides value. Insight, analysis, entertainment. Any of those. But you don't.
