Mo Hurst undecided about playing in the Outback bowl

Submitted by Bo Schemheckler on

Baumgardner just tweeted that Mo Hurst isnt sure if he will play in the bowl game and will discuss it with his family before making a final decision. I, for one, will not blame him one bit if he chooses to sit out. The man has given everything to this university and Jake Butt showed how that can backfire last year. Go make your millions Mo!

One other interesting tidbit is his quote on the potential transfers: "In football it's best not to let your feelings get hurt. The best players will play, that's how it goes".

I would honestly rather see Solomon and some of the other DL guys get an extended run.  Bowl games are about either salvaging the season or getting a sneak peek at the next season.  We can't salvage a 10-win season, so I'm more interested in what the 2018 roster will look like.

there is no way to get an insurance policy even close to his value in the first round.  Mo has given us 5 great years and deserves the right to opt out.  Plus, we want no risk to his 1st round draft position - that moniker is very valuable for recruiting his position ... its like gold.

Bowl games are for developing returning players anyway, so his backups will greatly benefit for next season by practicing with the other returning 1st teamers as well as getting the start in a big game.  Very motivating for the guys being asked to step up.

If Mo wants to sit out I do not begrudge him. Solomon can play and get the reps for next years championship run.

Furthermore, I think Ruiz should get the nod at center and Kugler should sit.

What if it were 5 to 10 starters? This trend is concerning...schools should opt for an insuramce policy for these players. Soon they may want to sit out November as well who knows?

If the NCAA responded by changing redshirting rules. If your team is eliminated from the division title, and it’s a rebuilding year, then maybe let the young kids play meaningful snaps at the end of the season without giving up their redshirt status. A kid that sits out the first 10/13ths of the year should still be eligible to red shirt. Make a rebuilding year an actual rebuilding year focused on the future.

Until anything remotely like that happens, the slippery slope argument just doesn't hold up. If someone truly wants to sit out, they can make it happen in September, November, bowl game, etc. They can nurse an "injiury." They can be sick. There is no way to control it so the only way the trend won't continue is if the games aren't as meaningless. No matter what anyone says, to some players an exhibition game that they recieve nothing for playing in sometimes carries no meaning for them. As a 1st rounder, it's not even a decision really unless you're in a playoff.

This bowl game is really the start of next year's season, so I think it's fine if Moe makes this decision and we play younger guys.  He's been awesome for us and we need to show him love.

Ruin the sanctity of the Outback Bowl and not play. Seriously, this isn't hard. Are you a potential top 20ish pick? Is your bowl game meaningless? Sit the F out.

Personally I think that he should not play in the game. Its an unnessesary risk that does not need to taken. Jake butt would have been a first or second round pick had he not been injured.

Is that vast majority here facing a similar situation, even the "play for the team" crowd, would decide not to play when they do the math. Guaranteed mid first round pick making millions of dollars vs risk, even limited, of a career ending injury. Given that, there is only one rational decision.

Agreed. The worst 1st round draft pick will still make near or over $10 million on the first contract without any other sources of income including endorsements.

1st Round Draft Pick healthy =  $10 million or more

Guy who blows out knee = possiblly not drafted at all, meaning $0

Pretty simple risk vs. reward decision. Secure your future or pretend you're invincible.

Sacrifice one day and one game for the betterment of thousands of other days and quite possibly those of your offspring.

is kinda dubious. You're not gonna be able to seal yourself in bubble wrap until you sign your contract. Injury can happen in the bowl, injury could also happen in any practice or workout session or walking down the street for that matter. I feel like once you get into this mindgame of trying to avoid injury at all cost..you probably make it more likely for it to happen in a random way.

In contrast, *if* the NFL doesn't work out for one reason or another (like you know, an injury in a situation you can't sit out), you may wish your final memory of playing for Michigan wasn't seeing Buckeyes partying in Michigan Stadium.

Before coverage of the NFL Draft combine was televised, before Wonderlic scores became blog topics, before NFL draft positions were measured by their financial value, before everyone with a computer and internet access could post their NFL Draft projections, and before college football players could buy insurance policies to protect against their losing money because of an injury suffered in a bowl game or post-season all-star game, participating in your team’s bowl game, regardless of your NFL drafts status was expected, as long as you were healthy.

I’m old enough to remember when the first game of the pro football exhibition season featured the NFL’s defending champions against a team of College seniors from the previous season. The College All-Star Football Classic was played from 1934 through 1976, except in 1974 when the NFL was on strike.

For most of my life, the best college seniors, regardless of their draft status, considered it an honor and privilege to play in the Senior Bowl or the East-West Shrine Game after the bowl season.

Times have changed. Unfortunately for those of us who just want to see the best players playing in bowl games, there are options available to players today that maybe even as recently as five years ago, they wouldn’t have considered.

Whether or not he plays in the Outback Bowl or the Senior Bowl, NFL teams will be able to judge Mo Hurst on films of his games, on his performances at the Draft Combine and during Michigan’s Pro Day and during personal interviews, in addition to speaking with his college coaches. More importantly, he has served the Michigan football program very well and has brought honor to the university. Congratulations and best wishes for him, regardless of what he decides about playing in the Outback Bowl.

no benefti for Mo to play.  Could only hurt his draft stock.  Makes no sense.  He has been a great ambassador for Michigan.  Mo, you worry about you.  If this was a playoff game that would be different. This game cannot benefit him in any way.  #1 rated PFF player in country.  Played every game this year.  Was unblockable.  If I was coach, I would be 100% supportive of his decision not to play.  Other players, who are on the bubble of a 2nd rounder, might want to play to improve draft stock.

I would probably feel differently. But it's just a bowl game. In the past, these bowls were a team celebration of the conclusion of a successful football year. Mr. Hurst, prowl the sidelines and cheer on the younguns. You did your part on the field for the team through the years. Time for the new guys to develop and prepare for next year. Enjoy.

I would like to see him play, after getting one of those insurance policies that pay off big if he gets hurt.  This would be similar to the policy Willis McGahee got just prior to blowing out his knee in his last Bowl game as a Hurricane.

Agree with many of the comments in here. Why risk injury for the Outback bowl? Playoffs would be a different story. We are being selfish if we denounce a projected 1st round talent coming off an amazing year because he doesn't want to put millions on the table for the Outback Bowl. If he decides to play, awesome. Obviously I'd like to see him in the game. But I am fine with whatever he elects to do.

JamieH

If I were him, I probably wouldn't play.  He's almost a guaranteed 1st round draft pick who will get a multi-million $$$ signing bonus.  All he has to do is make it to Draft Day with all of his body parts intact.

There is literally zero reward for him playing. It isn't like Michigan will hang an Outback Bowl championship banner in the Big House or something.

I mean as a fan, I WANT him to play.   But my motivations are selfish.

I wouldn't blame him either way.  Obviously would be nice to have him for a final game, but he's looking at a big NFL payday and I'd hate to see him lose out on millions because some Gamecock lineman clipped him.

Anyone lecturing Mo that he should play is out of their mind. There's no way most of us can even fathom the amount of money Mo is in line to make when he gets drafted. Then we are supposed to understand what it feels like to put that money on the line for a meaningless exhibition game? Get the fuck out of here.

Mo is our best player, my favorite player, and someone I personally know. If he doesn’t play that would be a little disappointing to me.

I hope he doesn’t play just so the assholes on this board, who believe he should play in a fairly meaningless bowl game and risk possibility of injury, which could cost him a lot of money, are forced to stew in their own pissed off juices while they quietly chant mantras about the team, the team. The coaches understand why, his teammates understand why, and these players don’t owe you, the fan, shit.
